Course Objectives:
To describe the concepts of antenna and its various parameters.
To discuss and analyze the concepts of Computational Electromagnetic using Moment
Method for solving antenna problems.
To impart and apply knowledge about the concepts of Computational Electromagnetic
using High-Frequency Methods for solving antenna problems.

Module 1

Antennas and its fundamental parameters Introduction, basic antenna parameters, patterns,
Beam Area, Radiation Intensity, Beamwidth, Beam Efficiency, Directivity, Gain, Directivity &
Resolution, Antenna Apertures and mutual relationships between them, Effective Height,
Radio Communication Link, Fields from oscillating dipole, Antenna field zones, Shape
impedance considerations, SNR, Antenna Temperature, Antenna Bandwidth, Antenna
Impedance, Front-to-back Ratio.

Module 2

Arrays: Point Sources, Power Patterns, Power Theorem, Radiation Intensity, Various forms of
Antenna Arrays, Arrays of Point Sources, Pattern Multiplication, Linear array with N Isotropic
Point Sources of equal amplitude and spacing, Array of N isotropic sources of equal magnitude
and spacing for Broadside case, Array of N isotropic sources of equal magnitude and spacing for
Endfire case, Array of N isotropic sources of equal amplitude and spacing end fire array with
increased directivity, N Element linear array and directivity.

Electromagnetic Radiations, Wave equations in terms of electromagnetic potentials and their


solutions, Short Electric Dipoles, Retarded vector potential and radiation from a small current
element, Fields of a short dipole, Power radiated by a current element and its radiation
resistance, Asymptotic current distributions in dipole, Radiation from a half - wave dipole,
power radiation by a half wave dipole antenna and its radiation resistance.

Integral Equations and Method of Moments: Introduction, Integral Equation Method
Electrostatic Charge Distribution, Integral Equation, Finite Diameter Wires Pocklingtons
Integral Equation, Hallens Integral Equation, Source Modeling, Moment Method Solution
Basis Functions, Weighing (Testing) Functions. 8 Hrs
Module 5

CEM for Antennas: High Frequency Methods: Geometrical optics, Wedge diffraction theory,
Ray fixed coordinate system, Uniform theory of wedge diffraction, E-plane analysis of horn
antennas. Cylindrical parabolic antennas, Radiation by a slot on a finite ground plane, Radiation
by a monopole on a finite ground plane, Equivalent current concepts, Multiple diffraction
formulation by a curved surfaces.
