Objectives:
At the conclusion of this module, you will be able to:
Explain the electrical wake-up line function.
Explain the optical wake-up line function.
Explain the importa nce of correctly configuring the optical ring.
W211 with NAV & a switch box installed in the trunk area
DVOM connected to CAN B by Education Center
Battery charger (connected correctly)
SDS / DAS with HMS 990
Electrical test kit with DVOM
Hectapuss harness for bridging connectors at X30/8
(supplied to reduce damage to connectors during training)
Required material:
1. Throughout this module we will be observing the interior CAN (CAN B) while
performing various diagnostic and operational functions to the audio system.
The DVOM that is connected to the vehicle has already been connected to
CAN B low. Here is what we should see if:
- CAN B is inactive (asleep) the voltage will be ~ 11.5 volts.
- CAN B is active (awake) the voltage will be ~ 4.5 volts.
2. There is also a switch box that will be used to simulate various malfunctions to
the audio system that must be in the correct position for that section of the
module. This switch box is located in the trunk.
33. Explain why you received the results that you did?

34. Re attach the bridge on the X30/8 connector securely.
35. Check for any fault codes and clear any DTCs.
36. Exit out of SDS / DAS, switch OFF ignition and remove key. Disconnect SDS /
DAS from vehicle.
37. Ensure audio system is OFF.
38. Monitor the DVOM that is connected to CAN B and wait until CAN B goes to
sleep before continuing.

27. Did you find any wake-up lines that have 0 volts? YES NO
28. Give four reasons why you may find 0 volts on the wake-up line with the X30/8
connector bridge removed?

29. Use the Hectapuss test harness to bridge all of the lines that have voltage on
them together.
30. Rerun the check of the wake-up lines to the MOST components.
31. What were the results of your test?

NOTE: You may need to select Restart of optical ring in the AGW menu before
fault codes regarding ring configuration can be erased.
37. Turn the ignition OFF & remove the ignition key. E xit out of SDS / DAS and
disconnect from the vehicle.
38. Monitor the CAN B voltage to ensure that CAN B is asleep before continuing.
If you have noticed any parts that need to be replaced on this vehicle, please inform
your instructor now.
