4 Definitions
Seat Diameter
Seat Diameter is the diameter of the body ID for swing through Swing through Butterfly Valves
and the diameter at the line (locus of points) of seat contact for other valves.

Orifice diameter
Orifice diameter is the diameter of the orifice of the seat ring (flow passage area). For Swing
through Butterfly Valves the orifice diameter is also the body inside diameter.

Seat Leakage
Seat Leakage is the quantity of test fluid passing through an assembled valve in the closed
position under the test conditions as defined.
Leakage Class
Leakage Class defines the test procedure and the method for determining the maximum
allowable leakage for a valve. Leakage Class II through leakage Class VI are defined in the
acceptance criteria section. Class IV-S1 is seldom used by Masoneilan so it is not included in
the allowable leakage charts in appendix 1.
Bubbles per Minute
The number of bubbles per minute is based on a suitable calibrated measuring device.
Allowable Leakage = AL/L

7.5 Test Procedure
Class II, III, IV, IV-S1 & Class V Using Air or Nitrogen Gas
Fixture the valve
Close the valve
With the valve closed fill the valve with the test medium.
Set the test pressure to 3 to 4 bar (50 PSIG +/- 7 psi) or the maximum operating differential
pressure whichever is least.
Wait for the leakage flow to stabilize
Measure the flow.
Record the results

Class II, III, IV, IV-S1 V using Water

Fixture the valve
With the valve open fill the valve and down stream piping with the test medium. Take care to
eliminate air pockets in the valve body and piping
For class II, III and IV set the test pressure to 3 to 4 bar (50 PSIG +/- 7 psi) or the maximum
operating differential pressure whichever is least.
For class V set the test pressure to the maximum service pressure drop across the valve plug
5%, but not exceeding the maximum cold working pressure of the valve.
Close the valve
Wait for the leakage flow to stabilize
Measure the flow. When using a volumetric method (i.e.; Graduated Cylinder) collect the water
for 3 minutes minimum.
Determine the actual leakage rate by dividing the collected amount in units collected by the
interval of time of collection in minutes
Record the results

Class VI using air or nitrogen

Fixture the valve
Close the valve
With the valve closed fill the valve with the test medium.
Set the test pressure to 3 to 4 bar (50 PSIG +/- 7 psi) or the maximum operating differential
pressure whichever is least.
Wait for the leakage flow to stabilize
Measure the flow either using a flow meter or the number of bubbles
Record the results
Note: To measure the number of bubbles Masoneilan employs a 6 mm [.25 in.] tube (outer
diameter; wall thickness 1 mm [.03 in.]) submerged in water to a depth of between 5 mm
[.19 in] and 6 mm [.25 in]. The tube end should be cut square and smooth with no
chamfers or burrs, and the tube axis should be perpendicular to the surface of the water.

1-3/8 34.9 19,000 8618
1-1/2 38.1 23,000 10433
Note:
Above maximum seat loads are based on 80% of maximum allowable thread stress for 316 stainless steel stems in compression. If
the stem is necked down the smallest diameter is to be used. Maximum Load (rounded down) = Allowable Material Stress x 0.80 x
Thread Stress Area

Rotary product body subassemblies other than ball valves shall be tested flow to close with
sufficient load on the lever to ensure seating. Ball valve body subassemblies shall be tested in
the same manner as a ball valve with actuator.
8.2 Cv Less than 0.1 for class II, III and IV
For Cv less than minimum published of 0.1, determine the leakage rate by utilizing a Cv of 10
times and then divide the corresponding allowable leakage by 10.
8.3 3-way valves
Test must be performed on both ports
8.4 Self regulating valves
No test is required unless requested by Customer, Consult Engineering.
8.5 Class IV Reduced Cv Cage Guided Valves
For shop production tests on Class IV valves with reduced capacity cages, the tested Class IV
leak rate should never exceed the Class IV allowable leak rate based on 25% of the standard-
trim full area rated capacity or the rated valve capacity whichever is larger. However, if a valve
fails the test as above the local engineering group has final authority for acceptance or rejection.
The ANSI / FCI 70-2 Class IV leakage test specification was developed for valves that reduce
Cv by reducing the orifice size. In cage guided valves Cv reduction is done by reducing the flow

area through the cage, leaving the leakage path unchanged. Because the standards do not take
this case into consideration, Masoneilan uses reasonable values based on reasonable reduced
capacity levels for available trim options. For additional information on the 41905 valve series
see CES-309 Product Scope 41005 Series.

8.6 Valves equipped with electrical actuator

The test is the same than with a pneumatic actuator but the actuator is closed with the torque
switch engaged.
8.7 Valves with 1% or 2% of Cv maximum leakage class (Swing through Butterfly)
1% & 2% leakage classes shall only be flow tested where available measuring equipment
permits. In all other cases leakage shall be verified by verifying part dimensions.
8.8 Test with other gases (helium)
If other gases are required to be used to perform seat leakage test. Consult Engineering for
alternate test procedures.

9.5 Class V: Allowable leakage

(AL/L) is determined by:
AL/L (l/hr) of water = 1.8 x 10-5 x Orifice Diameter. (mm) x Pressure Drop (bar)
AL/L (ml/min) of water = 5 x 10-4 x Orifice Diameter. (in.) x Pressure Drop (psi) or
AL/L (ml/min) of water = Orifice Diameter (in.) x Pressure Drop (psi) / 2000
AL/L (ml/min) of air or nitrogen = 4.7 x Orifice Diameter (in)
AL/L (m3/h) of air or nitrogen = 11.1 x 10-6 x Orifice Diameter (mm)
9.6 Class VI
Class VI establishes the maximum permissible seat leakage generally associated with resilient
seating control valves.
If the valve orifice diameter differs by more than 2 mm (0.08 in) from the values listed, the
leakage rate may be obtained by interpolation, assuming that the leakage rate varies as the
square of the orifice diameter.

LIQUID CALCULATION FORMULAS FOR CLASS II, III, IV
The following equation for choked flow and no pipe reducers taken from reference 3.2 Annex A
is used to calculate the allowable leakage rate Q.
Q in m3/h
P1, Pc and Pv in bar
0 and 1 fluid density in kg/m3

p1 FF p v pv
Q = 8,65 10 1 CvFL and FF = 0,96 0,28
1 / 0 pc

The following parameters are used to calculate the allowable leakage for water at 20C
Vapour pressure Pv = 0.0234 bar a at 20C
Critical pressure Pc = 221 bar a
0 = 1 = 1000 kg/m3
P1= 4.5 bar and
FF = 0.957
FL = 0.8
For a class IV Cv is replaced by 0.01 % Cv.
The allowable leakage a leakage for class IV is calculated with the following equation:
Q = 1.46 10 4 Cv

GAS CALCULATION FORMULAS

The following equation for choked flow and no pipe reducers taken from reference 3.2 Annex A
is used to calculate the allowable leakage rate Q.
Q in Nm3/h
P1 in bar a and P in bar
T1 in Kelvin
xt
Q = Cv 2.12 10 3 p1 0.667
