Workshop at IIT Bombay on Friday April 9, 2004

Product Lifecycle Management

Increasing product complexity, rapid innovation cycles, globalization and digitization has

driven the evolution of Product Lifecycle Management. In this, multiple issues related to
a product starting from concept and detailed design to manufacturing and service are
handled by different members of the team, irrespective of time and distance barriers
between them, using computer-aided technologies and digital communication networks.

A PLM system includes software for computer aided design, engineering, manufacture,
product data management, concurrent engineering and online collaboration. Product
development can be made more systematic and comprehensive, leading to continuous
improvement in productivity, quality and economy. In a highly competitive global
manufacturing scenario, this is beneficial to all firms in a supply chain.

The word PLM is however, being used in different contexts by different people including
consultants, software vendors and HRD managers, leading to confusion and delayed
acceptance in the industry. The purpose of this programme is to provide an overview of
PLM, highlight various DFX issues (X= ergonomics, manufacturability, service, etc.), and
present its applications in industry, supported by information about relevant software
tools. It is meant for practicing engineers, teachers and students.

Organisers The workshop is jointly organized by the Continuing Education Programme

of IIT Bombay and National Design and Research Forum of the Institution
of Engineers (India) with support from Parametric Technology Corporation.

Material Participants will receive lecture notes, additional reading material and a
CD with presentation slides.
