Anemometer
Using ultrasonic sensors
Anemometer is a device which is used to measure the speed of the wind.
There are different types of anemometer. Ultrasonic anemometer works like a
sonar. They measure wind speed based on the time of flight of sonic pulses
between pairs of transducers. This time of flight gives the velocity of the sonic
pulses (knowing the distance in-between), with which the velocity of wind can be
calculated by subtracting the speed of pulses (without the influence of wind)
from the calculated speed of pulses (when wind flows). Measurements from pairs
of transducers can be combined to yield a measurement of velocity in 1-, 2-, or
3-dimensional flow. Ultrasonic anemometers can take measurements with very
fine temporal resolution, 20 Hz or better, which makes them well suited for
turbulence measurements.
Working
A ultrasonic sensor sends a pulse which is reflected by an obstacle (a part of the
device) so that it is received by a sensor which is opposite to it. The time taken
for the pulse to reach the other sensor is calculated. In case of the influence of
wind, the time of flight changes.
If the wind flows opposite to the transmitter, the time of flight reduces and vice-
versa.
