Lesson Idea Name: Get to the Point!

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 7

Content Standard Addressed:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.A.1
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the
intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point
in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that
the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the
second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention
that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-
axis and y-coordinate).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.A.2
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the
coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation

Lesson idea implementation:

In this lesson, the teacher will assign each student a point to graph on a plane.
The students will have to use PowerPoint to show their thought process. They must have at least 5 slides, to
prove they know all the steps to go from a given point, and graph it on a coordinate plane.

The students will have 20 minutes to create their slideshow. They are allowed to be creative, add fun colors
to their slides, but are only allowed to use 3 transitions. This way, the class doesnt get too distracted from
the content. At the end of their 2 minute presentation, if they get it correct, they get an A. and if they do not
get it correct, but can then tell me why its wrong, they too will get an A.
I would provide the feedback to the student by having a small checklist of what they did, did not do, and what
their grade was. I would hand these checklists out to each student regarding their presentation as they left
the class that day.
