5.3 Program Evaluation


Candidates design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of
professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical
skills and/or increasing student learning. (PSC 5.3/ISTE 4c)

The attached artifact is the Current Reality Project that was completed in ITEC 7460. The artifact
was an individual assignment but required me to collaborate with leaders in the school. The
current realitys goal is to assess the professional learning that exists at the school and whether or
not it is effective. Through the process I interviewed two assistant principals to examine the
professional learning programs that are available at the school. The current reality examines the
professional learning in place and then makes recommendations on how it could be improved.

The artifact demonstrates mastery of 5.3 because it shows my ability to design and implement
program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening
teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student
learning. To help design the evaluation of the professional learning in the school I used the
Current Reality Template that was provided through the class. The evaluation goal was to
determine the overall effectiveness of the professional learning at Collins Hill High School. After
evaluating the professional learning at the school it was found that the professional opportunities
were plenty and effective for improving teacher pedagogical purposes.

I learned that it is important to get the leaders involved at the school in order to make changes at
the school. The leaders are the people who drive changes in the school building and getting them
on board supporting your claim will encourage change quickly. It is also important to change the
teachers dispositions towards professional learning in order to make the professional learning is
effective. Effective professional learning offers options to teachers and contains training that
directly relates to their content area. If I were to do this experience again I would get more input
from the teachers in the school.

This experience positively impacts the school by evaluating professional learning at the school
and figuring out if it is effective or not. By reviewing the evaluation the leaders can decide what
changes need to be made in the school with its professional learning. The adjustments will
impact the school by increasing professional learning that will in return will increase student
learning. The impact can be assessed by observations and surveys.
