5.1 Needs Assessment

Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and
subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based
professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)

The attached artifact is an individual needs assessment that was completed in ITEC 7460. This
artifact was completed individually but there was some collaboration done with completed
surveys to distribute and gather information. The goal of the project was to learn about an
individual teacher, assess their needs, and determine ways that the teacher could do a better job
at implementing technology into their classroom.

This artifact shows mastery of standard 5.1 because it show my ability to conduct needs
assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and
weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning
programs. During the beginning of the process I had to form a survey that will be useful for the
needs assessment. It was imperative to gather data to determine a needs assessment of what
needs to be changed in the school. Once the survey was created I distributed the surveys to the
colleague that I was doing the needs assessment on. During the meetings we went over his
strengths and weaknesses, according to him, and according to what I saw. We met over the
semester and used technology-based professional learning programs with a partnership approach.
Through the partnership we were able to share ideas and experiences.

I learned through this experience that is important to keep an open mind when working with
others on improving their technology implementation. Before starting to coach another teacher it
is important to know what that person needs. Your own time is valuable as well as the time of the
other person so setting meeting norms are important. I found that setting these norms and
boundaries allows the partnership to function efficiently. Once information and resources are
given to the colleague it is important to follow-up to see how the adjustments are working. If I
were to do this experience again I would spend more time following up. I would also try to do
more follow-up along the way.

This experience can impact school improvement by providing staff members with tools and
strategies to improve their implementation of technology into the technology. Students will be
impacted because the lessons will be more authentic and require the students to use higher level
thinking. The impact of the experience can be assessed through teacher observations and surveys
and attendance in professional learning.
