Insulation oil (quality) test
1. Clean and wipe the oil-sampling valve.
2. Pull the pressure relief valve to equalize the pressure if it is required.
3. Flush the sampling valve by draining off two litters of oil.
4. Rinse two stoppered glass bottles (0.5 litters each) with sampling oil or petrol (or trichloroethylene) before the use; then ma
Note: Avoid any cork-sealed vessel, and make use of glass bottles with large-sized glass plugs.
5. Let the first oil (about one liter) flow prior to collect the sample to be tested.
6. Collect the oil directly in the bottle prepared for the use; then close it tight avoiding any air presence inside.
7. Note: Avoid any bottle opening before the test, unless it is really necessary. In order not to make the sample vanish, the real
8. Test Dielectric strength.
The testing procedure is as follows: A sample of the oil to be tested is placed in a clean "standard" cup so that it covers the two
Voltage is applied across the electrodes and increased gradually until a flash-over occurs. It is an accepted practice to run a m
The minimum acceptable value is 30 KV for transformers less than 72.5 kV and 40 kV for transformers between 72.5 kV and 1
9. Test moisture content
If the oil sample fails the Electric Strength test it may be due to moisture content, which can be simply tested by means of the
10. Perform Oil Color Test
The color test is performed by:
Visually comparing the color of the oil to a color chart provided by the oil manufacturer.
The color scale on these charts range from 0.5 to 8.0 with new oil having a color number of 1.0 or less.
New oil will appear to be clear to a light straw color, while a dark red to black oil indicates sludge or other contamination.

Transformer insulation (winding) health check:

Required Steps:
1. Clean and wipe the oil-sampling valve.
2. Pull the pressure relief valve to equalize the pressure if it is required.
3. Flush the sampling valve by draining off two litters of oil.
4. Rinse two stoppered glass bottles (0.5 litters each) with sampling oil or petrol (or trichlorethylene) before the use; then mak
Note: A better way of sampling is with an injection needle, to retain gas content in the sample.
Note: Avoid any bottle opening before the test, unless it is really necessary. In order not to make the sample vanish, the real flu
7. Send the oil for chemical analysis and DGA.
8. Following tests to be carried out:
a. Interfacial tension Standard is >=22 mN/m, values between 15 and 22 mN/m requires additional investigation.
b. Neutralizations value Less than 0.5mg KOH/g oil
c. Dissipation factor tan delta at 25 deg C Less than 5% and at 100 deg C Less than 20 %
d. Water content Less than 20 ppm
e. Dissolved gas analysis
1. DGA shall be carried out by specialized vendors having adequate laboratory facilities and expertise in analysis.
