Ski slope problems with the 2120

For years I have used a 2120-2 and a Consultant with the 628 adapter and 2 cables/accels
each to collect route data with no normal ski slope problems. On the occasions that I did get
ski slopes, it was almost always a bad cable or in one case corroded contacts on the adapter.

Now, to facilitate working with a 2130, I have changed to using the 624A adapter and one
accel/cable per data collector. I purchased two brand new ones from CSI. All of a sudden
yesterday, my son Collect began to get big ski slopes on the 2120. I tested the bnc connection
on the cable by wiggling it while monitoring, saw the ski slope and changed to another
cable/accel and it seemed to correct it. He came back with the same problem and we
switched to the Consultant. He toughed it out for the rest of the day ghting the ski slope the
entire way.

Thinking that there could be a problem with the integration mode, I set up some tests to run
with both instruments and found that neither would collect the data accurately using the 624A
adapter, regardless of settings. When I was able to complete data acquisitions, number like 69
ips would show up.

Switching to back to the 628 adapters, both collectors performed consistently reading a
realistic .350 ips or so on my bench grinder.

I've noticed some differences in the pins used for ground when tracing the pinouts on the
connectors. Any ideas if this might be the problem?

I just have a really hard time believing that both data collectors OR both BRAND NEW adapters
went bad at exactly the same time

Hi Danny,
Are you using a 624A Accel Split Input adapter on your 2130 also ? You chouldn't. Only

on the 2120.
Regarding the Ground on the 624A and 628A adapter: please give me your e-mail so I can
send you what I have found on that.

Hey Uncle,

Thanks for the offer. It's the 628 and 624A adapters, not the 628A.

This problem persisted, coming and going apparently at random with no discernible pattern. A
few weeks ago it suddenly turned real bad, leading to very slow and unreliable data collection.
Testing in the shop with all the various accels, adapters and data collectors couldn't
reproduce the problem making me even more hesitant to send my data collectors out for
repair.

I decided to make an attempt at home repair which has apparently xed this problem. I
ordered new connectors and replaced the ribbon cable assembly that goes between the
adapter and the circuit board and have run two routes with no ski slope problems.

Disassembling my old connectors, I found that the gold smear on the contacts of the 25-pin d-
sub connectors was worn through which may have been the entire problem.

For anyone who is interested, I'll save you the time and effort of guring out the 3M and
Newark Electronics part numbers.

D-Sub Socket Connector: 3M Part Number 8325-6000, Newark Electronics Part Number
46F4832. There is also a strain relief clamp available that I used but don't have the part
number for. It's easy to nd at Newark.com

Wiremount Socket Connector: 3M Part Number 89126-0101, Newark Part Number 92F1487.

Just loosen up the 6 screws in the back that hold the cover and circuit board to the chassis
and the 2 socket head screws on the connector end. Slide the circuit board up just far enough
to get to the connector to remove it from the board and loosen the two screws that hold the d-
sub connector to the end plate. Cut a piece of ribbon cable that is 26 strands. You'll have to

cut one off to make it t into the 25-pin d-sub. The connectors take some force to make the
connections and there may be a tool that the pro's would use. I just used my considerable
mass. The whole thing takes about a half hour.

It may be the best $20 I've ever spent.

Thanks Danny, I've copied your last post into a word doc and have led for later reference if I
ever get the dreaded slopes and nothing else cures it

Jonesy.
