Course content

The education in process systems engineering in this

programme prepares students for work on the design
and operation of complex chemical and biochemical
production systems using mathematical models and
modern computer tools for simulation and optimisation.
Attention: this is not a process engineering course.
The course comprises advanced control and
production scheduling methods and the systematic
acquisition and analysis of experimental data. All
courses are taught in English. The Master's
programme also includes language courses - in which
students from abroad will acquire a working knowledge
of German - and the acquisition of soft skills. In the
final semester, the students work full-time on their
Master's thesis for six months.
Students learn in a truly international class and work
together with fellows from other countries, cultures, and
backgrounds. Joint work in tutorials, labs, and project
groups will broaden their horizons and enable them to
interact respectfully in international teams and
organisations.

Course objectives

Graduates of this Master's programme will have

excellent employment opportunities in both industry
and higher education. The courses provide
fundamental yet detailed applied education,
scientifically and practically challenging, while focusing
additionally on soft skills and languages. Above and
beyond a sound knowledge in engineering, students
will acquire a working knowledge of German and
develop social skills in group projects and seminars.
Process Systems Engineering is in great demand in
the market as it enables a chemical engineer to acquire
all the knowledge necessary not just for designing a
chemical plant but also for its simulation and
optimisation.
Digital Course Module(s)

PC-based lectures and tutorials

Description

Lectures and tutorials are partially run in PC-Pools.

Tuition fees

There is no tuition fee.

Enrolment fees

An administrative fee of around 260 EUR per semester

is charged. This fee covers transportation on the large
public transport network in and around Dortmund and
the whole federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Costs of living

Living in Dortmund is affordable compared to many

other cities in Europe. Students may expect living
expenses of about 580 to 680 EUR per month,
including accommodation, food, health insurance,
books, and miscellaneous expenses.

Job opportunities

The department has a limited number of part-time jobs

for successful students after the first semester.
However, funding for the first two semesters should be
secured before coming to Dortmund as time available
for work is limited.

Language requirements

Since the Process Systems Engineering stream of the

Master's programme is taught exclusively in English,
applicants must prove their knowledge of English. A
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) certificate is
mandatory for all applicants.

Academic requirements

For admission to the Master's programme, a BSc or

equivalent degree in chemical engineering is required.
Admission is based on the overall academic
performance, recommendation letters, mandatory GRE
scores, statement of purpose, and further
qualifications.
As the Master's degree programme does not include a
vocational component, an engineering-related activity
of at least nine weeks (which is equal to the practical
training of the Bachelor's degree programmes in
chemical or biochemical engineering at Technische
Universitt Dortmund) is essential. The internship office
of the Faculty of Biochemical and Chemical
Engineering will decide on the equivalence. This
internship can also be completed later (at the latest
before starting the Master's thesis) in Germany or in
the respective native countries. However, this might
extend the duration of the programme for the students.
Certificates have to be certified by a notary and/or by
the Ministry of Education or German consulates or
respective authorities. For enrolment they have to be
presented in the original.
Applications without GRE are not processed.

About the university

Investigating nature, educating people, accepting

technical challenges, and co-designing the resulting
cultural and social changes - these are the key tasks of
Technische Universitt Dortmund.
Right from the start, Technische Universitt Dortmund
has been dedicated to interdisciplinary cooperation
between natural/technical sciences and social/cultural
sciences and their specialities in the areas of research
and teaching. The potentials of these specific fields are
used continually in order to mutually increase
competence in orientation, cultural competence, power
of innovation, critical faculties and technological
knowledge, therefore ensuring an even higher quality
of study.
Technische Universitt Dortmund focuses not only on
the strengths of its individual disciplines but also on the
interdisciplinary network between its disciplines. This
implies more profile-building features with regard to the
teaching on offer and interdisciplinary research. The
interdisciplinary cooperation between the university's
three areas - engineering and computer science,
natural sciences, and social and cultural sciences -
opens up innovative synergy potential in research and
cutting-edge education.
Technische Universitt Dortmund regards the
preservation and improvement of its research
achievements the essential basis for its overall
development. Basic research and applied research are
in balanced proportion to each other.

About the city

Dortmund is located at the centre of Germany's largest

federal state North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). It lies at
the eastern end of the Rhein-Ruhr region, one of the
largest conurbations in Europe but is surrounded by
rural green belt areas to the north, east and south of
the city.
The former "steel city" has developed into a modern
and cosmopolitan metropolis and has acquired a well-
deserved reputation across Europe as a location for
innovative technological development. Dortmund
boasts a booming software industry and is in the
immediate vicinity of major centres of the chemical and
biochemical industries which offer extensive
opportunities for both internships and part-time work.
The university is adjacent to a large technology park
hosting both start-ups and established companies in
the IT, automation, microsystems engineering,
logistics, and biotechnology sectors. Although it is the
largest city in the industrial Ruhr region, Dortmund is
also endowed with extensive parks and woodlands,
providing a pleasant and affordable environment with a
wide range of cultural, sporting, and other recreational
possibilities.
The "Signal-Iduna-Park", home to six-time German
football champion Borussia Dortmund, is one of the
most modern stadiums of the Bundesliga (German
premier league) with a capacity of 80,000. It was voted
best stadium in the world by the British "Times" in
August 2009. Attending a home match on a Saturday
afternoon and seeing the "yellow wall" of Borussia fans
on the southern terraces doing a Mexican wave is
bound to bring out the football fan in everybody.
The region has an excellent public transport network.
Your student transport ticket is valid throughout the
entire state of NRW, enabling you to travel at will to
such cities as Aachen, Cologne, Mnster or
Dsseldorf. Dortmund station offers fast and frequent
intercity rail connections to all major German cities, and
the local airport serves a variety of European
destinations.
