Week 1 Assignment 2:
Researching Transitional Housing
In Richmond, Virginia there are several options for women in need of shelter and other
services the YWCA, Safe Harbor, HomeAgain, and the Caritas organization, to name a few. I
reached out to a few organizations and got in touch with Anne Hardin from Caritas. I have done
work with the organization in the past through my church which acted as a weekly Caritas
shelter for the homeless. Anne was kind enough to answer my questions and share some
information on the different ways that Caritas provides for women, although the organization
helps everyone in need, not only women.

Caritas offers a shelter program which includes a mens shelter, single womens shelter,
and a family shelter. The shelter placement is all done through Catholic Commonwealth
Charities, and there are several different options for shelters which may change periodically.
The program offers the option for people in the community to volunteer and even host shelters
for the homeless, abused, and addicted to drugs. Caritas works with the CCC to provide crisis
mediation and run a hotline for those who are in extreme need of immediate shelter (Get).
According to Anne, the goal of Caritas is to help our most vulnerable neighbors break the
cycles of addiction and homelessness to reclaim their dignity (Interview).

Caritas is a mobile shelter organization which uses congregations as shelters, and do not
have any permanent housing. The have a daytime shelter for families which people may use to
gather during the day with family and play with their children. Anne told me that the number
one need for tenants of a shelter is help with future permanent housing, followed by help
finding employment, transportation, and childcare. For tenants of a shelter, she stated that the
most valuable thing is room for privacy and space for storage.

Concept Statement
The Boston Transitional Housing Project will provide a new beginning
to women and children looking to rebuild their family environment in a
safe and stable place. Relaxing, calm, and comfortable would best
describe the overall mood of the spaces. An open floor plan will be
used to make the most of the common areas and to emphasize the
importance of building interconnected relationships between the
women and children sharing the house. Main architectural focal points
will be created with chair rails, base boards, and ceiling moldings.
Dramatic draperies in rich deep tones will draw attention to the
historic buildings character. Pastel tones will be present in childrens
room to help aid a sense of calm and belonging while deeper tones
will help play a role in adding energy to the common spaces and adult
rooms. Furniture will be made out durable carved wood in dark
finishes to contrast the light color schemes.
Color Scheme 1
I really like the very subdued and simple scheme of white with light and dark shades
of gray. It feels traditional and also very refined. The pops of burnt orange bring some
visual interest while staying true to the typical Federal style, as it is sort of a brick
color, which goes well with the exterior of the project building. The inspiration comes
from this furniture piece, which would fit well in any Federal style interior, and the
color scheme conveys the golden hues found in the wood and ornament while the
darker tones are inspired by the ebony legs and table supports.
Color Scheme 2
This feels like this is a really classic scheme for the Federal period. The light blue is
bright and airy, with cream, white, gold and brown tones accenting it nicely to create
a warm atmosphere. The inspiration comes from this painting of an eagle a major
theme in the Federal style. The colors are understated and timeless, while the sky is
very much the color of Federal Blue, a staple of the style.
Color Scheme 3
Again, another scheme I feel really represents the Federal style. The deep red is a
classic Federal color. The inspirational image is a painting of the signing of the
Declaration of independence, featuring muted greys, dark tones, and many accents of
red.

Justification
The lighting fixtures were selected in antique brass finishes
that complement the Federal style. A mix of general, task,
and accent light fixtures were chosen in order to meet the
needs of the residents of the Boston Womens Home.
The paint colors go along with the furniture upholstery and
continue the selected color scheme for the spaces within
the building. All are typical of the Federal style and enhance
the architectural style of the building. The wall covering is in
a damask pattern that also goes along with the color scheme
and will add visual interest as a focal wall in each apartment
and public area inside the building.
Flooring was chosen based on the typical Federal style with
reclaimed heart pine in all areas except for bathrooms,
where a classic black & white mosaic tile was selected.
Each selection was made with the color scheme in mind. For
the Boston Womens Home, a color scheme of neutral
creams, tans, and browns were chosen with a Federal blue
accent color. These colors work together well to create a
calming environment, perfect for the client and the
residents of the Womens Home.
With regard to sustainability, the wood flooring chosen as
the main flooring option is reclaimed wood, a very
sustainable option as it recycles old materials rather than
manufacturing new ones. The paint selections are health-
friendly for the residents with low-VOC, low-emissions and
low odors. They are also highly durable and very easy to
clean and care for, as they are all highly washable and only
require soap & water clean-up.
