PHASE 1 ABU WATER WORKS

WEEK 1

DATE DESCRIPTION OF WORK DONE


Monday Public Holiday for workers, No work was done
May 2, 2016.
Tuesday I attended the SIWES orientation by the SIWES supervisor
May 3, 2016. and Head Of Water Works, ABU Zaria.
Wednesday Introduced to the various sections that makes up ABU water
May 4, 2016. works; from the intake at the dam using low lift pumps, to
raw water purification and treatment units, to the reservoirs,
and then to the high lift pumps for discharge to the school
community.
Thursday I was taught how to carry out physical tests in the quality
May 5, 2016. control laboratory such as; tests for Turbidity, pH,
Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Dissolved
Oxygen and Residual chlorine content.
Friday I assisted the laboratory instructor in carrying out some of
May 6, 2016. the physical tests. Residual chlorine test was done for the
treated water only while other physical tests where done for
both treated and raw water.

WEEK 2

Monday -Physical tests in the quality control laboratory.
May 9, 2016. -de-sludging of the five concrete sedimentation tanks.

Tuesday -Physical tests in the quality control laboratory.


May 10, 2016. -I added Aluminium Sulphate (Alum) and Hydrated lime to
the coagulants dosing chamber.
Wednesday -Visit to the new water treatment plant within the
May 11, 2016. waterworks premises, the two underground water
reservoirs, one for treated water (1.5million Litres) and the
other for raw water(2million Litres) and the two
500,000Litre rectangular steel water storage tanks.
Thursday -Backwashing of the three filtration chambers.
May 12, 2016. -physical tests in the quality control laboratory and also
chemical tests such as; Tests for Free carbon(IV)oxide,
Alkalinity, chloride content and water hardness.
Friday -Physical tests in the quality control laboratory
May 13, 2016. -Flushing of the coagulants dosing chambers and the
horizontal flow baffled flocculation channels.
WEEK 3

Monday Installation of underground PVC pipes, a 1HP pump and an
May 16, 2016. overhead 4000L GP tank at faculty of veterinary Medicine,
ABU Zaria.
Tuesday Visit to MotherCAT project site for underground installation
May 17, 2016. of 150mm iron pipes whose inside is lined with concrete
and outside coated with rubber. The pipes were 6m long
and were joined together at socket end of pipe using
gaskets.
Wednesday I was Introduced to various types of pipes and fittings.
May 18, 2016. We took inventory of the pipes, fittings, pumps, storage
tanks and other water supply equipment at the School of
Postgraduate studies ABU Zaria.
Thursday Installation of service and delivery pipes and the
May 19, 2016. appropriate valves and fittings needed to supply water from
a 4000L GP tank to taps in a new building in School Of
Postgraduate studies ABU Zaria.
Friday Repair of damaged detachable joint in an asbestos-
May 20, 2016. cement(AC) pipe at Area BZ

WEEK 4

Monday -I was introduced to electrical safety and safety wears
May 23, 2016. -I was given a brief description of how electricity from
33KVA High Tension (HT) Wire is made useable in
Powering the water works.
Tuesday I was introduced to the functioning of the Rings Main Unit
May 24, 2016. (RMU) and I was shown how it connects the high tension
(HT) wires to the primary coil side of the transformer.
Wednesday -I was introduced to the functioning of a transformer and
May 25, 2016. feeder pillars, I was also shown the primary and secondary
coils of the transformer within the water works premises.
Thursday -I was shown the three 500KVA generator sets that serves
May 26, 2016. as an alternative power source, the 800Amp change over
switch, the main control panel and circuit breakers it
contains.
Friday I was introduced to the functioning of the distribution
May 27, 2016. boards, panel starter, and was shown how power is supplied
to the electric motor in the high lift pumps.

WEEK 5

Monday Public Holiday to mark Democracy Day. No work was
May 30, 2016. done

Tuesday -Installation of delivery pipes that supplies water to


May 31, 2016. different units within the School Of Postgraduate Studies,
ABU Zaria.
Wednesday -repair of damaged service pipes and construction of
June 01, 2016. concrete slab to be used as a platform for a 4000L Geepee
water storage tank in the School Of Postgraduate Studies,
ABU Zaria.
Thursday -I added appropriate dosage of alum and hydrated lime to
June 02, 2016. the coagulants mixing chamber
-I assisted in pre-chlorination of filtered water from the
filtration tanks.
Friday -Maintenance work was done on the high lift pumps and I
June 03, 2016. was introduced to some of the tools used.

WEEK 6

Monday -I carried out Physicochemical (or physical) tests on treated
June 06, 2016. and on raw water in the quality control laboratory.
- I assisted in the repair of a leaking impeller casing
(volute) of one of the high-lift pumps.
Tuesday -I carried out physicochemical tests in the quality control
June 07, 2016. laboratory and also chemical tests such as; Tests for Free
carbon(IV)oxide, Alkalinity, chloride content and water
hardness. I also added appropriate dosage of alum and
hydrated lime to the coagulants mixing chamber.
Wednesday -de-sludging of the five concrete sedimentation tanks.
June 08, 2016. -I carried out physicochemical tests as well as Hydrogen
sulphide (H2S) bacteriological test to check for presence of
bacteria in the treated water.
Thursday -I carried out physicochemical tests and checked the result
June 09, 2016. of the H2S bacteriological test done the previous day. I also
did Jar test to determine the optimum quantity of alum to be
used for water treatment
Friday I carried out physicochemical tests in the quality control

WEEK 7

Monday -screening of unwanted particles in the filtration chamber
June 13, 2016. and I also carried out physicochemical tests in the quality
control laboratory.
Tuesday -I carried out physicochemical tests as well as Hydrogen
June 14, 2016. sulphide (H2S) bacteriological test to check for presence of
bacteria in the treated water.
Wednesday -I checked for the result of the H2S bacteriological test and
June 15, 2016. added the appropriate quantity of chlorine for pre-
chlorination at the filter gallery.
-I also did physicochemical tests in the quality control
laboratory.

Thursday -I carried out physicochemical test for treated and raw


June 16, 2016. water in the quality control laboratory.
-I also did turbidity test for different samples of water
Friday -Screening of unwanted particles in the filtration tanks.
June 17, 2016. -Physicochemical tests in the quality control laboratory.

WEEK 8

Monday -I screened out unwanted particles and insects from the
June 20, 2016. filtration tanks and the flocculation channels.
-addition of alum and lime to the coagulants mixing
chamber and pre-chlorination in the flocculation channels
Tuesday -De-sludging of the five concrete sedimentation tanks.
June 21, 2016. -Trouble shooting the water distribution pipe network at
Area A, ABU Zaria to check for areas where there are
blockages and low pressure.
Wednesday -De-sludging of the five concrete sedimentation tanks
June 22, 2016. owing to high turbidity and sediment deposition
- I screened out unwanted particles and insects from the
filtration tanks and the flocculation channels.
Thursday - De-sludging of the five concrete sedimentation tanks
June 23, 2016. owing to high turbidity and sediment deposition
-removal of blockage in a distribution pipe and flushing out
of sediments from the pipe network using the wash- out
valve.
Friday -Repair of a damaged 6 inch I.D pipe close to Queen Amina
June 24, 2016. Hall, ABU Zaria.
-Fixing of a ball valve in a storage tank at ABU staff school

WEEK 9

Monday I toured round ABU school community to inspect the
June 27, 2016. various industrial fittings and valves some of which
includes; washout(drain) valve, Air release valve, fire
hydrant etc.
Tuesday Troubleshooting of problems associated with water
June 28, 2016. distribution in The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, ABU
Zaria.
I inspected a leaking pipeline at Area C, ABU Zaria to
assess the level of damage.
