Assignment 3 School Uniforms

Uniforms have always been discussed by parents and schools about whether it is necessary
to having a school uniform, what are the benefits of children wearing a school uniform and

The very first school uniform is dated back to England in 1222, it was a robe-like uniform,
(Meleen, 2014). Although it was not until the 16th Century modern school uniforms started to
appear and became more well known. For centuries uniforms have been throughout schools,
although they were only used in private or religious schools, it has only been recently that

students more disciplined and controlled. Those who had a school uniform came from higher

There seems to be more of an interest in school uniforms raising, back in the 16th Century it
was to set you apart and show discipline and morals, these days it seems to still be for
discipline but now they are looking more at the students and the school. When you see a

rules that come with the uniform such as, girls must have their hair tied up if it is below

Gentile & Imberman (2016, p. 26), states that some students rebel against the idea of wearing
a school uniform so they act out and become disruptive during class time, causing the others
to either follow the disruptive students or achieve less in class due to the disruptive student.
Students who wear a uniform are just like every other student, they feel they have no
uniqueness and they struggle with finding their own identity as they are not able to express
how the feel through their clothes, so they find other ways of expressing themselves, this is

students are trying to figure out who they are themselves and being restricted by a uniform, use others show more research

confines them and they start rebelling. When parents become aware of the difference
between the benefits of uniforms, they usually prefer to take them out of the school with no
uniform and place them somewhere with a uniform.

Those without school uniforms performance was less academic than those of someone who

academic performance. Uniforms are often always considered expensive, and some schools

to buy new school uniforms every couple of years while their children are still growing. If
parents are lucky enough they can get second hand uniforms, although most children do not
like second hand and would prefer brand new, sometimes they have no choice as the

uniforms is improving the safety in the schools and their peers, there are been less bullying

do not come to school with dirty clothes, they come to school with the same clothes that their
peers are wearing. Although hats have become compulsory it is considered in the best

It is unclear whether all the factors have any indication on whether school uniforms should
be enforced or not. Although school uniforms have been around for a few centuries, it has Commented [P26]: Take a position would be better

only just started being used in public schools, this does not seem to have a huge impact on
the students, it seems to depend on the school and their pupils, although wearing a school
uniform shows where you are from. There are many reasons for having a school uniform, such
as less bullying and being able to see unauthorised visitors. There are also many reasons for
not having one, such as students struggling to find their own identity and uniqueness, along
with the cost of a uniform every time a child has a growth spurt. It does seem apparent though
that at least a dress code of any sort has been enforced into both public and private schools.
Having a dress code is beneficial for both the students and the schools. The dress code
allows students to be comfortable at school in clothes that are acceptable but not deemed
