Assignment 3 School Uniforms

Introduction: Commented [P2]: Delete all of these headings not

appropriate
Uniforms have always been discussed by parents and schools about whether it is necessary
to having a school uniform, what are the benefits of children wearing a school uniform and
what are the unbeneficial aspects to wearing a school uniform. (Craik, 2007, p. 37) says, Commented [P3]: ? use better terminology this is an

have started to bring in school uniforms or a dress code as well. Baumann & Krskova (2016,
p. 4) discusses that, quite a few questions and concerns have been raised as to whether it is
conforming children too much and not allowing them their own uniqueness, while others
believe school uniforms are important so children are not treated differently. This essay will Commented [P5]: This is more mood setting type content

History: Commented [P8]: Delete not appropriate

The very first school uniform is dated back to England in 1222, it was a robe-like uniform,
(Meleen, 2014). Although it was not until the 16th Century modern school uniforms started to
appear and became more well known. For centuries uniforms have been throughout schools,
although they were only used in private or religious schools, it has only been recently that
public schools have adapted the school uniform or at the very least a dress code (Dussel, Commented [P9]: This is just background content take as
assumed and move on
2006, p. 179). They used the uniform to control unruly behaviour, believing that it would make
students more disciplined and controlled. Those who had a school uniform came from higher
class families and there for went to higher class schools. Private schools were considered
more higher class, they had the blazers and uniforms. School Uniforms now come with so
many rules because of the past (Craik, 2006, p. 37). Students would wear the wrong outfit,
girls would wear their skirts too high and boys would wear inappropriate clothing. (Meleen, Commented [P10]: Full stop after grammar?

There seems to be more of an interest in school uniforms raising, back in the 16th Century it
was to set you apart and show discipline and morals, these days it seems to still be for
discipline but now they are looking more at the students and the school. When you see a
school uniform you instantly know what school that child now goes too. Commented [P12]: Not overly useful this content here and
needs to be positioned much better

Cons: Commented [P13]: Delete

Craik (2006, p. 38) explains that when wearing a school uniform indicates that there are many
rules that come with the uniform such as, girls must have their hair tied up if it is below
shoulder length, no hat means no play and how long skirts or shorts need to be to be deemed
appropriate. Girls usually seem more criticised when it comes to the school uniform and their Commented [P14]: Poor topic sentence here your own words

if you forgot your hat you would have to sit inside as the hat was part of the school uniform,
most schools have enforced the no hat, no play scheme. Students are also not allowed to
borrow other students hats usually due to the thought of head lice. Commented [P15]: A touch general here relate more to the

Gentile & Imberman (2016, p. 26), states that some students rebel against the idea of wearing
a school uniform so they act out and become disruptive during class time, causing the others
to either follow the disruptive students or achieve less in class due to the disruptive student.
Students who wear a uniform are just like every other student, they feel they have no
uniqueness and they struggle with finding their own identity as they are not able to express
how the feel through their clothes, so they find other ways of expressing themselves, this is
what usually causes the disruptive behaviour. Gentile & Imberman (2016, p. 26) states, Commented [P16]: Okay yes

between the benefits of uniforms, they usually prefer to take them out of the school with no
uniform and place them somewhere with a uniform.

academic performance. Uniforms are often always considered expensive, and some schools
are more expensive than others. Students also have growth spurts causing some parents have

to buy new school uniforms every couple of years while their children are still growing. If
parents are lucky enough they can get second hand uniforms, although most children do not
like second hand and would prefer brand new, sometimes they have no choice as the
uniforms are expensive. Commented [P19]: This needs to be positioned into better

According to Baumann & Krskova (2016), public schools are finding that having school

students for not having the coolest outfits and not being able to afford new clothes. Students
do not come to school with dirty clothes, they come to school with the same clothes that their
peers are wearing. Although hats have become compulsory it is considered in the best
interest for the children, by protecting them from the sun and the harmful UV light. It is
considered to have a positive association when wearing uniforms, as it can be related to
status and power (Spragley and Francis, 2006, p.56). They even explain that those who had a

uniform can also indicate those who are unauthorised to be on the school grounds or around
students. Those who have uniforms feel part of a community, they do not see others as
superior or inferior as they all wear the same clothes and come across as united. Public
schools are started to bring in the idea of a dress code, where the students must wear usually
a coloured polo shirt and black or blue pants as to signify what school they come from and
the community they are a part of. Baumann & Krskova (2016) states, those who wear a school

Conclusion: Commented [P25]: Delete

It is unclear whether all the factors have any indication on whether school uniforms should
be enforced or not. Although school uniforms have been around for a few centuries, it has Commented [P26]: Take a position would be better

only just started being used in public schools, this does not seem to have a huge impact on
the students, it seems to depend on the school and their pupils, although wearing a school
uniform shows where you are from. There are many reasons for having a school uniform, such
as less bullying and being able to see unauthorised visitors. There are also many reasons for
not having one, such as students struggling to find their own identity and uniqueness, along
with the cost of a uniform every time a child has a growth spurt. It does seem apparent though
that at least a dress code of any sort has been enforced into both public and private schools.
Having a dress code is beneficial for both the students and the schools. The dress code
allows students to be comfortable at school in clothes that are acceptable but not deemed
inappropriate on the school grounds or before and after school hours. Commented [P27]: Conclusion sums up points generally well
from above

Unfortunately this presents more as a report if anything here and more thought and
consideration needed to go into the overall structure here. You must ensure academic essay
structure practices are applied throughout and they arent overly evident here. Some
assistance from the Student Learning Centre would be very useful over the break to rectify
this concern. You at times overuse the same literature again and again you need to conduct
more research and integrate more supporting claims. You also need to ensure equal
considerations and link to your school, which is not evident here. Final Grade: 60% P
