HTA 3B02 TERM 4 ASSIGNMENT

DUE DATE: 21 OCTOBER 2016

There are numerous moveable and immovable objects of heritage in South

Africa. Specific legal categories dictate exactly how these heritage objects
should be maintained, conserved and used. This task is not easy as there are
several bodies and authorities involved in caring for various historical, cultural
and natural heritage objects. This becomes even more complicated when you
consider that as each heritage object is unique.
It will be your task in this assignment to:

select any South African heritage site;

motivate why you chose this site from a heritage point of view;
describe why this site is significant/important, indicating its unique
features;
provide the following information about the site:
- geographical location;
- physical nature of the site;
- the condition of the site;
- relevant dates;
indicate to what an extent the site complies with conditions as set out in
the relevant parts of Act No. 25 the National Resource Heritage Act of
1999;
Highlight the problems in doing this;
Indicate which heritage authorities should be approached and why;
If necessary, provide a brief report of what should be done to preserve
the site.
This exercise should inform you to understand from which angle a heritage
impact assessor will start when you contract him to do the required HIA.

You can use the following sources:

Books;
Journal articles;
Encyclopaedias;
Examples of HIA.
Illustrations to provide extra information.
