Section - A (25 Marks)

1 Define the term tonne of refrigeration. (2)
2 Explain the effect of sub-cooling in Vapour compression refrigeration system (3)
3 What is the function of a flash intercooler provided in a compound vapour compression (3)
refrigeration system
4 What is the function of a absorber in an absorption system (2)
5 Explain the designation of refrigerant with an example. (3)
6 Write a short note on by-pass factor for cooling coils (3)
7 What is effective temperature? What factors affect effective temperature (3)
8 Define Grand Sensible Heat factor (GSHF) (2)
9 Define Wet Bulb Temperature (2)
10 Define Peltier effect (2)
Section - B (50 Marks)
11 (a) Discuss the classification of refrigerants. (4)
(b) An air conditioning system unit of a pressurized aircraft receives its air from the jet engine (6)
compressor at a pressure of 1.3 bar. The ambient pressure and temperature are 0.3 bar
and 240 K respectively. The air-conditioning unit consists of a freewheeling compressor
and turbine mounted on one shaft. The work produced by the turbine is sufficient to drive
the compressor. The compressed air is then cooled in the cooler at constant pressure and
then expanded in the turbine to the cabin pressure of 1.1 bar and 282 K. Calculate the
compressor discharge pressure and the cooler exit temperature

12 (a) Explain a three stage compression with multiple expansion valves and flash intercooler (6)
(b) A Vapour compression works on a simple saturation cycle with R-12 as the refrigerant (4)
which operates between the condenser temperature of 400C and an evaporator
temperature of -50C. For the modified cycle, the evaporator temperature is changed to
-100C and the operating conditions are the same as the original cycle. Compare the power
requirement for both cycles. Both system develops 15 tonnes of refrigeration.

13 (a) Explain with help of neat sketches, vapour absorption cycle for refrigeration. How is it (5)
different from vapour compression refrigeration system
(b) Explain Steam Jet Refrigeration system on Enthalpy Entropy diagram and also on (5)
Temperature Entropy diagram
14 (a) Define relative humidity, specific humidity, and dew point temperature and describe a (5)
theoretical method for determining their values
(b) Calculate, (i) Relative humidity (ii) Humidity ratio (iii) dew point temperature (iv) Density (5)
and, (v) Enthalpy of atmospheric air when the DBT is 35 0C, WBT is 23 0C and the
barometer reads 750 mm Hg.

15 (a) What is comfort air-conditioning? Draw a rough comfort chart. (5)

(b) An air conditioning system is to take in outdoor air at 100 C and 30% relative humidity at a (5)
steady rate of 45 m3/min., and to condition it to 250 C and 60% RH. The outdoor air is first
heated to 220 C in the heating section and then humidified by the injection of hot steam in
humidifying section. Assuming the entire process to takes place at a pressure of 100 kPa.
Determine: (i) The rate of heat supply in the heating section
(ii) The mass flow rate of steam required in the humidifying section
16 (a) Explain any two types of humidifiers. (5)

(b) Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of automatic expansion valve. Discuss the (5)
factors that affect the capacity of the valve

17 (a) With a simple sketch, explain the working of thermoelectric refrigeration system, list out (5)
its merits and demerits.

(b) With a neat sketch explain the working of Bell-Coleman cycle (5)
