About this document
About this document

Purpose
The ES64U is an extension of the 1675 LambdaUnite MSS capabilities. It provides
Ethernet Layer 2 switching features across the different physical interfaces provided by
the way of Ethernet I/O boards. This equipment is also supplying an SNMP management
interface based on an Alcatel-Lucent proprietary MIB definition.
The complete SNMP MIB description is supplied by Alcatel-Lucent via ASN.1 files.
This document aims to describe the usage of this MIB from the management system point
of view. It is proposed by Alcatel-Lucent to customers in order to help the development of
a dedicated management system dealing with the full discovery and provisioning of the
ES64U.

Intended audience
This document is intended to who ever is concerned with the SNMP management of the
ES64U.
It is considered as a reference guide for ES64U network management via SNMP
interface.

Generic interface MIB

Generic interface MIB tables
The generic interface MIB tables are:
IfStackTable (standard)
IfInvStackTable (standard)
IfTable (standard)
IfXTable (standard extension)
OpticsIMIfTable (proprietary)
OpticsIMEthConfTable (proprietary)
nnNMXOpticsExtETSPortMirrorTable (proprietary)
OpticsIMEthVLANTypeTable (proprietary)
The relevant managed attributes of the tables involved in the interfaces/ports management
are the following:

IfStackTable (IF-MIB)
The ifStackTable contains information on the relationships between the multiple
sub-layers of network interfaces.

Object identifier (OID):

1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.2
Full path:
iso(1).org(3).dod(6).internet(1).mgmt(2).mib2(1).ifMIB(31).ifMIBObjects(1).ifStackTable(2)

Description
In particular, the ifStackTable contains information on which sub-layers run on top of'
which other sub-layers, where each sub-layer corresponds to a conceptual row in the
ifTable. For example, when the sub-layer with ifIndex value x runs over the
sub-layer with ifIndex value y, then this table contains:

ifStackStatus.x.y = active

For each ifIndex value, I, which identifies an active interface, there are always at least
two instantiated rows in this table associated with I. For one of these rows, I is the value
of ifStackHigherLayer; for the other, I is the value of ifStackLowerLayer. (If I is

not involved in multiplexing, then these are the only two rows associated with I.) For
example, two rows exist even for an interface which has no others stacked on top or
below it:

ifStackStatus.0.x = active
ifStackStatus.x.0 = active

ifInvStackTable (IF-MIB)
The ifInvStackTable contains information on the relationships between the multiple
sub-layers of network interfaces.

Object identifier (OID):

1.3.6.1.2.1.77.1.1
Full path:
iso(1).org(3).dod(6).internet(1).mgmt(2).mib2(1).ifInvMIB(77).ifInvMIBObjects(1).ifInvStackTable(1)

Description
In particular, the ifInvStackTable contains information on which sub-layers run
'underneath' which other sub-layers, where each sub-layer corresponds to a conceptual
row in the ifTable. For example, when the sub-layer with ifIndex value x runs underneath
the sub-layer with ifIndex value y, then this table contains:

ifInvStackStatus.x.y = active

For each ifIndex value, z, which identifies an active interface, there are always at least
two instantiated rows in this table associated with z. For one of these rows, z is the value
of ifStackHigherLayer; for the other, z is the value of ifStackLowerLayer. (If z is
not involved in multiplexing, then these are the only two rows associated with z.)
For example, two rows exist even for an interface which has no others stacked on top or
below it:

ifInvStackStatus.z.0 = active
ifInvStackStatus.0.z = active

This table contains exactly the same number of rows as the ifStackTable, but the rows

Alarms and events

Trap mechanism
To use the trap mechanism you should use the following features:

Manager list
Define to which IP address and UDP port to send the traps:
You need to use 2 tables: (duplicate tables for future usage of filtering)
opticsIMMgrPollingInfoTable
tsdimEFDTable
Maximum configured managers is 10.

Alarm profiles
Define profile for specific/group/all sources of alarm to use.
By default there are 4 profiles defined those defaults can not be edited.
You can define up to 96 new alarm profiles.
Each profile defines the severity for each possible alarm.
For profile definition you need to use 2 tables:
tsdimAlarmSevProfileTable general description of the profile
tsdimAlarmSevTable detailed information of this profile contents
If the severity can not be found within the relevant profile definition, the trap will use a
default (minor).
tsdimAlarmSevDefault
By default all sources pointed to profile #2 (=primary alarms)
tsdimIfAsapIndex (within opticsIMIfTable)

TsdimAlarmSevProfileIndexNext
This object contains an appropriate value to be used for
tsdimAlarmSevProfileIndex when creating entries in the tsdimAlarmSevProfi-
leTable.
The value 1 indicates that no unassigned entries are available.
To obtain the index value for a new entry, the manager issues a management protocol
retrieval operation to obtain the current value of this object. After each retrieval, the agent
should modify the value to the next unassigned index (or -1).

Overview
Supported counters
The PM supports the following counters for RX:
TRCO Total received Octets
TRCF Total Received Frames
TDF Total Discard Frames
The PM supports the following counters for TX:
TTO Total Received Octets
TTF Total Transmitted Frames
TDF Total Discard Frames
There are 3 types of counters:
Current free running counters, those counters are available for Ethernet interface
which are activated (admin up status on IfTable). Those counters can be reset to zero
while required. You can delete & create the PM collection operation for those
counters. While deleting the PM collection, those counters will not be available in the
history table as well and their historic information will be deleted.
History counters for each interval time, there are 2 granularities for those interval,
15 minutes & 24 hours. The 15 minutes granularity collect the previous 96 intervals
and the 24 hours granularity collect 2 intervals latest 24 hours and the current one
since last midnight. The history RX/TX PM is available for interfaces which are
retrievable on the current RX/TX tables.
Maintenance Those counters are free running HW counters which start their
collection on system initiation and available regardless the admin status of the
interfaces. Those counters can not be controlled.

ES64U SNMP MIB description Overview

Performance monitoring per queue

Overview
PM per queue presents the Performance Monitoring for each queue.
There are currently 8 queues per port and they are equivalent to the TD type as follow:
1-bestEffortService, 2-regulatedService, 3-guaranteedService, 5-backgroundService
6-regulated4Service, 7-regulated3Service, 8-regulated1Service, 9-guaranteed2Service
The PM per queue supports the following counters:
TCF Total Conforming (green) Frames
TnCF Total non Conforming (yellow) Frames
DiscardTCF Total Discard Conforming (green) Frames
DiscardTnCF Total Discard non Conforming (yellow) Frames
TCO Total Conforming (green) Octets
TnCO Total non Conforming (yellow) Octets
DiscardTCO Total Discard Conforming (green) Octets
DiscardTnCO Total Discard non Conforming (yellow) Octets

Overview
Supported counters
There are 6 types of inflow counters:
TRCFg Received Green Frames (CIR service)
TRCOg Received Green Octets (CIR service)
TRCFy Received Yellow Frames (EIR service)
TRCOy Received Yellow Octets (EIR service)
TRCFr Received Red Frames (policing discard)
TRCOr Received Red Octets (policing discard)
There are 4 types of outflow counters:
TTFg Transmit Green Frames (CIR service)
TTOg Transmit Green Octets (CIR service)
TTFy Transmit Yellow Frames (EIR service)
TTOy Transmit Yellow Octets (EIR service)
TDFg Discarded Green Frames (CIR service)
TDOg Discarded Green Octets (CIR service)
TDFy Discarded Yellow Frames (EIR service)
TDOy Discarded Yellow Octets (EIR service)
There are 3 types of counters:
Current free running counters, those counters are available for flows that their
related XC is activated. Those counters can be reset to zero while required. You can
delete & create the PM collection operation for those counters. While deleting the PM
collection, those counters will not be available in the history table as well and their
historic information will be deleted.
Maintenance - Those counters are free running HW counters which start their
collection on XC activation of the related flow and available regardless the admin
status of the PM. Those counters can not be controlled.

Ethernet WRR modification

The Weighted Round Robin (WRR) feature enables the user to configure the weights of
the WFQ.
The ports can work in two modes:
Automatic mode when ports use the default weight configuration. For automatic
mode, the user does not have to configure the queues in the ports.
Manual mode when ports use manually configured weights. It is mandatory to
manually allocate weights (other than 0) and a Queue-Type (profile) for each of the
queues on the port.
When a port is created, it is configured to automatic mode by default.
There are 16 hard-coded queue-types (profiles) that consist of the parameters mentioned
above:
Q length
EIR WRED low threshold
EIR WRED high threshold
CIR WRED low threshold
CIR WRED high threshold
The following are the profiles parameters:
EIR min from this threshold till EIR Max, graceful (probabilistic) yellow packets
will be discarded
EIR max above this threshold, all yellow packets will be discarded
CIR min from this threshold till CIR Max, graceful (probabilistic) green packets
will be discarded
CIR max above this thresholds, all green packets will be discarded

calculated upwards to the smallest value higher than or equal to the user configuration
according to the valid values specified in the following list:

While the port is a LAG member, it is not allowed to specifically configure any of the wrr
paramters. When the wrr parameters are updated into a LAG group, the update is copied
to all its members. When a port is deleted from the LAG, the port keeps the same wrr
values it received when it belonged to the LAG group.

WRR limitation
Aging
Aging is a HW process by which frames are removed from the memory after a given
period of time. This time is not fixed, but determined by the HW behavior of the memory.
Under typical conditions this time is around 50 msec. As both CIR and EIR traffic are
buffered together, buffering EIR can cause CIR latency to increase beyond the aging
threshold and cause CIR discard. Below we supply guidelines on how to configure the
system to reduce CIR discard due to aging.

Queue profile guidelines

The choice of the queue profile is intended to yield buffer thresholds that are as large as
possible, to accommodate for bursts, but to still prevent CIR frames from aging.
The aging time depends quite a lot on the traffic statistics, but generally speaking, the
following parameters are the most important:
Total ES64U input rate. The smaller the total rate of TM is the less chance of aging. If
the input rate is unknown, the worst case is 20G.
Average packet size of all input traffic, not just for the required port. Worst case is 64
Byte. Shorter frames cause the packet memory to be used less efficiently. This factor
becomes less pronounced beyond ~ 400 bytes per frame.
Average packet size per port determined the effective data rate of this port, and affects
the bandwidth allocated to WFQ queues, see next bullet.
BW associated with the relevant queue. This is based on the port capacity, the
GUA+GUA2 rates and the WFQ weights. If the leftover rate is known, the rate per
WFQ queue can be determined from the configured weights. Please note that the
relevant bandwidth here is the line rate so that the frame size per port is relevant.

WFQ profiles (queue types)

For typical average frames sizes (>400B) and full node utilization (15-20G) the following
table gives recommended queue type values as a function of the port capacity allocated to
the WFQ queues ( i.e [total port data rate]-[GUA + GUA2])

Notes:
1. Queue types with stars (*1) are the smallest thresholds HW permits but still too large to
prevent aging under extreme conditions. Therefore, aging is possible.

Extreme values and limitations

Effect of node utilization
The above table was given under the assumption of ~400byte frames size and full node
utilization. If the node utilization decreases, the aging time increases, and it is possible to
increase the buffer sizes- pushing the queue profiles towards profile #9 ( beyond profile
#9 the operator must inspect the threshold table, as these are manual thresholds).
Effect of frame size
If the frame size is known to be much smaller than 400 bytes, then the aging time
decreases. In this case, the thresholds must be decreased in order to prevent large latency
of CIR frames due to EIR frames. If the operator sees CIR discards, reducing the queue
profile should improve this.
Minimum queue size and minimum bandwidth
There is a limit to how small the queue depth threshold can go. HW restricts the lowest
non trivial discard threshold (zero is a possibility, but it does not occur in the existing
profiles) to about 128 KB (queue profile 1).. An aging time of 50 msec (which is a typical
aging time) is equivalent to buffering 128 KB at a queue rate of 128*8/50~20 Mbps.

cross-connect (ingress mirroring), or leave the specified cross-connect (egress mirroring).
The mirrored traffic could be monitored at specially defined ports (TAC1 or TAC2).
Any port in range 1-30, 129-158 could be defined as following:
Normal port ports works as usual port and allows to define services on it
TAC1 port port works as first service mirroring port. Doesn't allow defining services
on it.
TAC2 port port works as second service mirroring port. Doesn't allow defining
services on it.
When a port is created, it is configured to normal port by default. Modification of mirror
interface definition (meaning define a port to be used as mirrored port only) allowed for
interfaces with AdminStatus down only. Not allowed to define more that one TAC1
interface, and more than one TAC2 interface.
Each inflow or outflow has service mirroring flag that defines if mirror traffic for the
flow. Service mirroring index defines the service mirroring port TAC1 or TAC2.
When a port is defined as a service mirroring port, all the duplicated packets will be sent
on the Reg queue.

1+1 LAG - Link Aggregation management

Overview
LAG interface
An LAG interface is a group of two Link Aggregation ports which is considered as a
single interface.
In order to configure an LAG interface, the manager should configure two MIB tables:
alclnkaggAggPortTable (proprietary) A table that contains Link Aggregation
Control configuration information about every Aggregation Port associated with this
device. A row appears in this table for each ethernet interface.
The table is pre-configured with a row for each Ethernet interface. The configuration
consists in modifying the specific interface values.
alclnkaggAggTable (proprietary) A table that contains information about every
Aggregator that is associated with this System.
The table is pre-configured with a row for every supported LAG group. The
configuration consists in modifying the specific LAG values.
The association of a port to a LAG group is based on the ActorAdminKey. Once the port's
key equals an active LAG key, the port is an attached LAG member.
For LAG naming rules refer to Appendix B, 1+1 LAG naming rules LAG naming
rules.

1+1 LAG group deactivate

Deactivating a LAG group consists in setting the group AdminState to DISABLE.
The sequence of actions is the following:
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

1 Set the alclnkaggAggAdminState in alclnkaggAggTable to DISABLE.

In order to disable an LAG, no active ETS inflow or outflow should contain the LAG
index.
The sequence of operations is detailed in the next table:

The following considerations apply to proposed naming rules for Ethernet Link
Aggregations:
Data Client purposes field keeps both the same range and syntax as in referred
document for Naming Rule for 4G node
Naming rule for Ethernet Link Aggregation is identified from an hard-coded
value encoded in T subfield (equal to decimal 1), identifying an LAG as a logical
interface;
L bits allow to decode the hierarchical level; L bits are set to 00 when an LAG
interface is created and are incremented for stacked interface over LAG interface
Channel field has been removed from the LAG naming rule

1+1 LAG naming rules

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Hierarchical structure (with physical coordinates (rack, subrack, drawer, board))
inside 4G NE naming rule with 00 T subfield is replaced from a flat structure
consisting of both Interface Type and Logical Interface Identifier field:
Interface Type field is filled up with hard-coded IANA If Type value (161) for
Ethernet Link Aggregation
Logical Interface Identifier field is filled up with LAG logical identifier: up 256K
Link Aggregation Groups are allowed to be supported on per NE basis.

I Interface (or Termination)

An interface is an object that has a corresponding entry in the IfTable of the MIB. It can be a
physical or a logical interface.
A physical interface can be supported by the following underlie layers:
MAU: in this case, the interface is connected to a physical port, and the Ethernet interface of
the stack is called a local interface (Not supported for 5.0)
SDH: in this case, the interface has a related NAP in the SONET Matrix, and the Ethernet
interface of the stack is called a remote interface
A logical interface is an interface that is stacked over another (physical or logical) interface
The interface that is supported is of type GFP.
The supported stacking combination is:
