Laminated Sheaths
for Communication
Cables
as per VDE 0816/DIN 57 816 . A-...(L)2Y...

APPLICATION
Laminated sheaths are used on cables intended for permanent
installation as a protection against mechanical influences and
ingress of moisture and as an electrical shield.
Laminated sheaths are light, smooth, abrasion-proof and resistant
to the normal mechanical and chemical stress that can be
expected in buried cable systems. They are insensitive to shaking
and can therefore also be used alongside busy roads, along
railways, and on bridges subject to vibration.
On unfilled cables the laminated sheaths described here are
tested with an internal gas overpressure of 0.8 bar. They are suited
for gas-pressure supervised local and long-distance cable routes.
Cables with laminated sheaths can be pulled into ducts or buried.
Because of the sheath design, cables with laminated sheaths
can be bent, for example for installation of closures, without
springing back to any significant degree. For this reason only a
few fastening devices are required in manholes.
In cases of abnormal stress, special cable protection measures
must be determined individually.
If cables are laid by means of a winch and a pulling-in wire, the
permissible pull must not be exceeded. The cables can be
supplied with different tension-proof end seals, depending on
cable makeup and stress. If the cable is fitted with a suitable
head, the cable core and, if provided, a tension-proof armouring
help to absorb pulling forces. This increases the permissible pulling-
in length, which then depends mainly on the makeup of the cable
and the armouring.
If the cables are used on routes subject to power line interference
or lightning, calculations must be made to determine whether
improved sheath conductivity is necessary. This can be achieved
by applying copper wires under the sheath, for example. These
elements, and the sheath, must be connected to ground at
branching or terminating points along the route.
During laying, the permissible temperature range for the cable is
between -20oC and 50oC; before and after laying the upper limit
is 70oC.
The laminated sheaths described comply with the German
specification VDE 0816/DIN 57 816.

Description Planning values at 20 oC
A black, stress-crack-proof PE sheath is pressed onto a
0.2 mm thick aluminum tape which is plastic-coated on
both sides and applied over the core wrapping
longitudinally with an overlap. The plastic coating of the
aluminum tape is permanently bonded at the overlap
and with the PE sheath.
Diverting radius and bending radius
In the case of cables with coaxial pairs or stranded
elements with comparable electrical characteristics the
relevant specifications must be observed.
For cables with other types of stranded elements the
diverting radius during laying must not be less than 7.5
times the outer diameter of the cable.
When finally forming out a cable, the minimum
permissible bending radius is equal to half the minimum
permissible diverting radius.

* The cable reduction factor r is a measure of the shield effect

of a grounded cable sheath. It is defined by the ratio of the
direct-axis component of the emf actually induced between
the cable conductors and ground, to the direct-axis
component of the emf which would be induced in the absence
of a metal cable sheath.

PE foam-skin insulation . unit stranding . fully filled .

A-02YSF(L)2Y ... x2x0.6 St III Bd and

APPLICATION
These cables are designed for use as non-pressurized main
(primary), distribution (secondary) and junction cables in local
telephone networks as well as in private communications systems,
e. g. with PABX equipment.
If required, e. g. in junction cables, the VF operated side circuits
can be coil loaded. Utilization of selected pairs with TDM
equipment, e. g. PCM 30, is also possible.
The cables are suitable for direct burial or for pulling into ducts.

DESCRIPTION
Bare copper conductor, diameter 0.6 mm or 0.8 mm.
Insulating cover of cellular polyethylene (PE) with additional skin
of solid polyolefine (foam-skin).
Each 4 wires are twisted to a star quad, the quads are stranded
to units, the units are stranded to the cable core.
Filled cable core.
Cable core wrapping.
Laminated sheath, i. e. shield of plastic covered aluminum tape
bonded with PE sheath.
The properties of the filling compound and the core wrapping
are such that no water is able to spread along the inside of the
cable if its sheath becomes damaged.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Foam-skin insulated filled communication cables offer an ideal
combination of:
- high reliability assured by continuous petrolatum filling and a
- laminated sheath
- low transmission loss coupled with
- economic cable dimensions, and furthermore
- easy handling.
The last three properties are obtained by means of a conductor
insulation consisting of an inner PE layer of cellular structure and
an outer skin-like cover layer consisting of solid extruded
polyolefine. The foamed PE assures low mutual capacitance with
a small insulation diameter while the cover layer has a robust
surface permitting clear colour coding.

APPLICATION
These cables are designed for transmission of low frequency
signals in installations with electric train operation, in cases where
symmetric circuits are required.
The cables are suitable for direct burial, for laying in cable conduit,
and for pulling into ducts.

DESCRIPTION
The cable makeup is geared to different conditions for the cable
reduction factor
Type AJ-2Y(St)YbY...
Bare copper conductor, 0.9 mm or 1.4 mm diameter.
PE insulation.
Conductors twisted into star quads.
Star quads stranded in layers to form the core.
Core wrapping.
Shield of longitudinally applied copper tape, PVC sheath, black
Bedding.
Armouring consisting of two layers of 0.5 mm or 0.8 mm thick steel
tape.
PVC protective cover, black.
Type AJ-2YDYbY...
as for type AJ-2Y(St)YbY..., but instead of the copper tape shield
there is an open layer of copper wires.
