HirShabelle State Assembly lawmakers laud training on conflict resolution

and reconciliation

Mogadishu, 18 July 2017- Legislators from HirShabelle State Assembly today

concluded a capacity building workshop on conflict resolution and
management, convened by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM),
in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

The six-day training which was attended by 75-legislators was funded by the
Dutch government through its funding to the AU Missions Stabilization
Programme. The sessions focused on the MPs role in resolving conflicts and
enforcing reconciliation. In addition to conflict resolution and reconciliation,
the Hirshabelle workshop (unlike the one organized for Galmudug) also
included constituency relations management and parliamentary leadership
skills.

We are the newest and youngest federal member state and therefore
appeal to the Federal Government of Somalia and AMISOM to continue with
their interventions until we find a lasting solution to recurring conflicts in
HirShabelle state, Tariig Ibrahim Ahmed, an assistant Minister for Women
and Human Rights in the state said.

The workshop is part of a series of capacity building trainings for the regional
state assemblies, being carried out by AMISOMs Political Office. Similar
workshops have been held for Galmudug and Jubbaland state assemblies.
There are numerous conflicts in Somalia and this workshop helps us in
mediation and finding lasting solutions to these conflicts, noted Mohamed
Sheikh Ahmed Farasade, the HirShabelle state Assistant Minister for
Agriculture and Irrigation.

Adding that conflicts in Somalia had significantly reduced, the assistant

minister lauded AMISOMs role in the cessation of hostilities among Somali
communities. The takeout is to implement in our communities what we
have learnt from this workshop.

AMISOM is conducting these workshops in line with its mandate to support

the Federal Government of Somalia achieve peace and stability in the
country.

It is my sincere hope that you will return to your various destinations in

HirShabelle, better equipped with better understanding of your
parliamentary duties, Mr. Adebayo Kareem, AMISOMs Acting Chief of Staff
told the legislators, in the course of the workshop last week.

In his remarks, Hon. Sheikh Osman Bare Mohamed, the Speaker of the
HirShabelle State Assembly thanked the AU Mission for spearheading the
capacity building workshops but made a plea for more support. He cited the
HirShabelle state assembly building, which he said needed rehabilitation to
make it habitable.

At the end of the opening ceremony, the AMISOM Force Commander Lt. Gen.
Osman Noor Soubagleh held interactive sessions with the parliamentarians
regarding AMISOMs mandate and security related matters.
