Lesson idea implementation:

The students will watch the video I created as homework. In the video, the students will try to reason
through rules involving logarithms. When they come to class the next day, we will have a class discussion on
these rules. Students will raise any questions they may have on logarithms and exponential functions. Once
we finish discussing the rules, I will briefly talk about the real world examples from the video. In this
explanation, I will just explain what carbon dating and pH levels are. For the students task, they will research
applications for logarithms and exponential functions.
The video reviews our lesson of logarithms and exponential functions so that students can have extra
review before they begin the project. The introductory lesson will take place the class period before the
homework is assigned, students will complete the video assignment for homework, and then the next two
classes (of 90 minutes each) will be used to finish our discussion of the functions and then research
applications.
In the project, students will find an application of logarithmic functions and one application for
exponential functions. The application can be the same, but they must show the use of each function. For
example, exponential decay can model how much of a substance remains. If the students use the logarithmic
function, then they could find the age of the substance, given other information. Students will create their
own video explaining their topic and giving an example of each use. Videos should be 1-3 minutes. They can
include any creative element of their choice (music, pictures, and animations). I would conclude the lesson by
showing their videos to the class during the final class period. Finished videos will be published on a password
protected blog site for students to share their videos with friends, family, and their community members.

Students will work in groups in which lower level students will work with higher-level students who serve as
peer tutors. Additionally, students have freedom in how much they include in their video, so some
differentiation is built in. For students who struggle to stay organized or on task, I would provide a list of
possible projects and give them graphic organizers to gather their information.
Students will be assessed using the video they create as well as participation in the group. I will give
written feedback using a rubric with comment sections. To extend to LoTi 6, I could bring in a professional to
work with students (possibly a geologist).

Importance of technology:
The multimedia tool I created is essential to the project because it gives students the chance to review
logarithms and exponential functions at home. This project could have been completed without the video,
but would be much less beneficial and engaging. The students would not be able to refer back to it easily to
study or help with their project. Without the students use of creating a video, the students would lose the
creativity aspect of the project. Other technology used in the project would be iMovie for students to create
their own movie.
Inspiration (optional):
I was inspired by Vi Harts video on logarithms. Part of the video clip is included in the video I created.

Additionally, Kennesaw State Graduate Student Andrew Smith introduced me to the idea of explaining
logarithms using Vi Harts approach.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

In this project, I will give students a list of resources to use when searching for video clips and music to add.
Additionally, since student voices and possibly faces will be used in their videos, the blog page will be
password protected so only those with the password can view the video. I would get specific permission from
parents before posting the videos, regardless of any forms that have already been signed.
