A bibliography of theconcept,Offentlichkeit- a termwhichcan be

translatedas publicness,thepublic,publicity or,as is mostcommon,the
-
publicsphere1 is necessarily eclectic:itsfunction is to bringtogether
workwhichdefinesandchallengestheborders oftheconcept,andtodoc-
umentitsbroadand varieduse. Thismeansthatarticlesor bookswhich
are constitutive of theway we thinkabouttheconceptin anyparticular
or
discipline community standside-by-side withworkwhichmayhave
primarilysymptomatic significance.

Offentlichkeit has a longconceptualhistory in theGermanlanguage;Jiirgen Habermas's
appropriation of thetermhas refocused attention on it,whilealso powerfullyshapingits
subsequentreception anduse. The currentinterest in theEnglishterm'publicsphere,'on
theotherhand, can be tracedprimarily toHabermas. The enormous amountofworkdone

abouttheuse oftheconceptOffentlichkeit understatesocialism.Yetthere
is no workwhichis not of
symptomaticsomething else,andno apparently
symptomatic workwhichhasno immanent validity.To neatlyseparatethe
symptom under analysis from theprinciple brought to bearon itpresup-
the
poses validity ofthe latter, insteadof establishing it.The conceptualor
practical foundation for work within any particular disciplineor field
oftenbelongsto background assumptions whichfunction as a kindof
naturein thatdomain.Butthesepresuppositions arenotalwaysdifferent:
even apparently heatedinterdisciplinary disputessometimesrestupon
commonstructuring assumptions which providethegroundforthedis-
agreement.
This phenomenonis what makes a bibliography on the concepts
Offentlichkeit and publicsphereinteresting: in bringing togetherwork
employingradicallydifferent theoreticallanguages, and constituted by
sometimessharplydivergent structuringpresuppositions, an interdiscipli-
narybibliography forcesthestudent, orhistorian, ortheorist of Offentlich-
keit to account for his or her reliance on familiarconcepts and
presuppositions. The literary theoristmayderidethehistorian's inatten-
tionto textualdetail;thehistorian may find herself exasperatedat the
former's to
apparentinability clearly define his terms. Butthisencounter
can also becomefruitful, if abstractnegation - the disciplinespeaking

ceptualestrangement. Implicitin an interdisciplinary bibliography is a
critiqueof theidea of foundational knowledge:ifphilosophy, or anyof
thecurrent pretenders, werestillqueenofthesciences,thentherewould
be no needto subjecttheconventional use ofa conceptwithina particular
fieldto thetestof a different discursivecommunity's conceptionof the
term.In a context whereno disciplinecan anylongerclaimtobe founda-
tional,thedisciplines also finditdifficult toenforce claimsofsovereignty
overdomainsof analysiswhichare increasingly contested. In thissitua-
tion, intellectualscan do one of two things:they can defendthesover-
eigntyof particular disciplinesand discourses, or theycan attempt to to
takeup positionsas translators and interpreters betweendifferent disci-
plines, traditions, and communities.3 To do theformer implies,at best,
thatone acceptsthe validityclaimsof one's own discipline,or social
community, or theacademicenterprise as a whole- an attitude which

the "universalprovincialism" characteristic of theacademicdisciplines

particular, the interdisciplinary feminist contributions to the discussion
aboutOffentlichkeit documented hereillustrate thisdevelopment: a new
theoretical-practical is
language emerging out of this debate, partly
becausethediscussionis necessarily interdisciplinary,andpartlybecause
theparticipants, insteadofbracketing out"private" experiencefromtheir

The conceptof Offentlichkeit has an immanent relationto theidea of

politicalpromise, oritsbureaucratic routinization. Thereis no transcendent
