The Wärtsilä Airguard is an anti-pollution lip type seal used in combination with oil lubricated stern tubes of conventional propulsion systems. It is especially designed for applications where extra security against the leakage of oil into the seawater is required.

Equipped with 4AS since newbuilding

Genuine anti-pollution stern tube sealing can only be achieved if the seawater and the stern tube oil are completely separated from each other by an air barrier. The system works as follows: Compressed air is blown into the air barrier chamber. The air pressure is automatically set slightly higher than the sea water pressure. By function of a constant air flow into the air barrier chamber the air is forced to flow into the seawater. The air barrier chamber is connected to an inboard draining system. Any seawater and/or oil entering the air barrier chamber is automatically drained inboard without leaking outboard or entering the stern tube. Because the Wärtsilä Airguard takes away successfully the oil-to-sea-

interface, it can be operated with mineral oil with regards to the US VGP2013. The aft stern tube seal is a multibarrier lip type seal containing three or four seal rings. Two seal rings face the stern tube oil side and provide active double security against oil spill. The seal ring on seawater side separates air and water with no load on it. This seal ring is protected by a P-ring designed to prevent fishing nets from damaging it. All seal rings run on a shaft liner to avoid grooving of the shaft. The most essential parts of stern tube seals are the seal rings and the liner. The Wärtsilä Airguard operates with standard Viton material, but can alternatively be equipped with BioSealRing-Viton. Both materials combine excellent wear and heat resistance as well as excellent chemical resistance properties. The seal liner is made of a special type of high nickel chromium steel, offering the optimum combination of wear and corrosion resistance.

Features & benefits

The Wärtsilä Airguard seal was originally developed for new build vessels in 1988 and to date no lube oil leakage into the sea has been reported with a properly maintained Airguard. In addition, over the last 5 years in excess of 200 vessels have been upgraded to using the Wärtsilä Airguard seal.
