Introduction

Language acquisition is the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and
comprehend language, as well as to produce and use words to communicate.
First Language Acquisition
First language acquisition refers to the childs acquisition of his mother tongue, and how he
comes to understand and speak the language of his community.

The Behaviourist perspective :

The Behaviorist Perspective Learning is explained in terms of imitation practice and
reinforcement.
Behaviorists view that children learn language through a process of stimulus (hearing)
and response, in which they imitate sounds and practice what they hear. Thus, correct
structures are positively reinforced and encouraged by their environment.

The Innatist Perspective

Noam Chomsky is the best known and the most influential American Linguist of the
second half of the Twentieth Century. He has made a number of strong claims about
language.
He argued that children are Biologically programmed for language and that language
develops in the child as well as the other biological functions develop.

Universal Grammer
Chomsky's idea suggests that "all human beings inherit a universal set of principles and
parameters that control the shape human beings can take, and which are what are what make
human languages similar to each other.
Principles:
Languages vary in limited ways .some things are true of all languages. For example, structure
dependency tells as that all languages have sentences consisting of NP and VP.
Parameters:
Parameters tells us how languages are different. For example, the head parameter determines
whether a language will be right-branching or left-branching.
Second Language Acquisition
The definition of second language acquisition and learning is learning and acquisition of a
second language once the mother tongue or first language acquisition is established. Second
language acquisition or SLA is the process of learning other languages in addition to the native
language. For instance, a child who speaks Hindi as the mother tongue starts learning English
when he starts going to school. English is learned by the process of second language acquisition.
In fact, a young child can learn a second language faster than an adult can learn the same
language.

Conclusion
Hence the mother tongue or L(1) is as Important as of second language or L(2) . but aside of
positive effects on our cognitive process, learning a second language has been truly rewarding
experience. Learning a second language can also develop mother tongue skills.
