ACADEMY OF ADVANCED STUDIES
Est. 1950

The purpose of the Academy of Advanced Studies is to offer students a rigorous program
of academic studies. We want our students to realize that their talents are a gift from God
which need to be developed and used for others. Our faculty and staff challenge our students
to achieve the highest possible level of academic excellence.

maintain a high G.P.A. The Academy offers students the opportunity to participate in special seminar courses, summer elective
courses, enrichment trips, college visits, ACT & SAT test prep and career shadowing.

Students will be accepted into the Academy of Advanced Studies during the incoming freshman admissions process. Students
who score 85% or above on standardized tests and/or who have a B+ average will be considered as candidates for the academy. All
eligible students will receive an application for the academy. Final approval of all candidates will be determined by the Academy of
Advanced Studies Admissions Committee which is headed by the Principal. Space in the program is limited for each grade level.
At the end of freshman year, eligible students may receive an application for the academy, if space is available.

Each year the students enroll in an Academy Seminar Course in Social Studies or Religion. As freshmen, the students take Big
History which covers the history of the universe from the Big Bang through today. Explorations in the Modern Era which covers the
major events in Modern American History is our sophomore offering. An Academy Religion Course which focuses on encountering
Jesus in the Sacraments and exploring the Catholic moral concepts that govern our lives is offered to the junior Academy students.
As seniors, the Academy students are enrolled in an Academy Religion Course which focuses on examining the universal call to
holiness and our response to the major social issues of today.

All Academy of Advanced Studies students must enroll in courses designated as enriched, honors, advanced, or college credit. Our
enriched and honors level courses cover more material and require more independent work. Advanced College Credit Courses are
offered through Saint Louis University, Truman State University and the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Advanced College
Credit Courses are available in English, Math, Social Studies, French and Spanish. Students must dually enroll in the Bishop
DuBourg course and the university course to earn the college credit. A separate fee must be made payable to the universities to
earn college credit. In 2016-17, the fee is $6065 per credit hour. Honor students not in the Academy of Advanced Studies may
also enroll in the Advanced College Courses.

FAITH & SERVICE
Faith
As an Archdiocesan High School, Bishop DuBourg strives to instill the Churchs
teachings in each student and their personal relationship with God. Bishop DuBourg
students are required to take four years of religion and attend monthly all-school
masses.

In addition, each class participates in a minimum of one retreat, or day of prayer, during
the academic year. Juniors participate in a three-day Kairos retreat in which they spend
time in prayerful reflection in an environment where a strong relationship with Jesus is fostered and encouraged.

Service
Bishop DuBourg students are called to serve locally and within the community at large. To advance our mission, we
require that students complete annual Christian service hours.

FRESHMEN SOPHOMORES JUNIORS SENIORS

20 HOURS 25 HOURS 35 HOURS 70 HOURS
Service sites typically include local hospitals, retirement and nursing home facilities, non-profit organizations, schools,
and daycares. Opportunities to serve beyond the St. Louis boundaries are available through annual service trips over the
winter and summer months. These trips have included Joplin and Ellington, Missouri; Tupelo, Mississippi; and New
Orleans, Louisiana.

The benefits of Christian service hours extend far beyond the service itself. It is our hope that this experience will be the
beginning of a lifelong commitment to service.
TECHNOLOGY
One-to-One Tablet Program
A well-developed technology program to complement the curriculum is essential in
developing an enhanced college preparatory experience for our students. In 2015-
2016 school year, Bishop DuBourg introduced a school wide One-to-One Tablet
Program. Each Bishop DuBourg student is equipped with a Windows Tablet that
offers students the ability to utilize the tablet as a lap top or touch screen device.
When considering our technology choices for one-to-one, we selected a tablet
which is more affordable for our families and also compatible with the Microsoft
technology that is already used in most homes.

The purpose of this One-to-One Tablet Program is to provide our students the
opportunity to integrate technology into all aspects of the educational experience.
Our goal is to fully engage the students in the teaching and learning process and
extend their classroom experiences beyond pages of books and walls of the school
building. Utilizing these tablets on a daily basis will allow students to understand
the valuable role of technology in their high school education and in their future
educational endeavors.

ATHLETICS
Athletics are a big deal
in high school, and at
Bishop DuBourg, its no
different. Bishop DuBourg
has multiple athletics
opportunities, ranging
over three seasons,
through over 30 athletic
teams on freshmen, JV and
Varsity levels.

Participating in multiple sports is the norm, rather than

the exception at Bishop DuBourg, as we have student-
athletes who participate in up to four sports per school
year.

Although most of our athletic teams consist of multi-

sport athletes, we continue to excel yearly, not only in the
classroom, but on the field as well.
