Experiment # 1
Theory:
Most of the present day transmission and distribution networks are operating on A.C.
voltages and hence most of the testing equipment relate to the high A.C. voltages. For voltages
higher than 400 kV, it is desired to cascade two or more transformers depending upon voltage
requirements. Single unit testing transformers are available up to 750 kV, but it has been found
that the cost of test unit increases rapidly with voltage due to insulation requirements. There is
also a problem of transportation and erection due to large size of bushings. To overcome these
Difficulties two or three units of same rating are cascaded whereby only the L.V. winding of the
first unit is connected to the supply and H.V. windings of all the units are connected in series.
The main advantage of cascaded transformer is its cost is less as compared to the single unit
testing transformer. Other advantages include as the height of individual unit is less so the
bushings are small and since the units are identical therefore reliability is better and
interchangeability is possible.
Procedure:
The cascaded modular transformer is simulated on matlab Simulink by using
three identical 5000 KV transformers that are cascaded in order to obtain the desired output
voltage of 15,000 KV. Voltage is measured using voltage measurement block and is displayed on
