Assignment No 1

Grade: AA / AB / BB / BC / CC / CD /DD

Signature of the Staff In-charge with date:

Mapping with Course Outcome 1:- Compute stresses due to different types of loading on elastic body
Syllabus Module covered: 1,2
1. A steel tube of 30 mm external diameter and 25 mm internal diameter encloses a copper rod of 15
mm diameter to which it is rigidly fixed at each end. If at a temperature of 10o C, there is no
longitudinal stress, calculate the stresses in the rod and tube when the temperature is raised to 150o
C. Take E for steel and copper as 2.1X105 N/mm2 and 1 x 105 N/mm2 respectively. The value of
coefficient of linear expansion for steel and copper is given as 11 x 10-6 /oC and 18 X 10-6 /oC
respectively.
2. Draw SFD and BMD for a 9 m long beam shown in figure. Internal hinge is at point C. Hinge
support at B, D and F.

Mapping with Course Outcome 1:- Compute stresses due to different types of loading on elastic body
Modules covered: 3
1. A beam of I-section having top flange (100mm x 20 mm) web (20 mm x 100 mm) and bottom flange
(150 mm x 20 mm) is supported on an overhang beam with loading as shown in figure. Calculate the
maximum value of W if allowable bending stresses are 45 MPa in tension and 55MPa in compression.
Find also radius of curvature at mid span for maximum load W. take E = 200 GPa.

2. A short hollow C.I column having an external diameter of 600 mm and inside diameter 400 mm was
cast in a factory. On inspection it was found that the bore is eccentric as shown. If the column carries a
load of 1600 KN along the axis of the bore, calculate extreme intensities of stress induced in the
section.

Assignment No 3

Mapping with Course Outcome 3:- Analyze structural members for deflection, buckling, bending and
torsion.
Syllabus covered: 4
1. A shaft is required to transmit 250 kW power at 240rpm. The maximum torque may be 1.5 times
the mean torque. The shear stress in the shaft should not exceed 45 N/mm 2 and the twist 10 per
meter length. Determine the diameter required if (a) the shaft is solid (b) shaft is hollow with
external diameter twice the internal diameter. Take G=80kN/mm2.
2. A solid cylindrical shaft is designed to transmit 350 kW at 100 rpm,

(i) If shear stress is not to exceed 70 x 106 N/m2, find its diameter.
(ii) What percentage saving in weight would be obtained if the shaft is replaced by a hollow one whose
internal diameter equals 0.5 of the external diameter? Assume the length, material, maximum shear
stress are same as that of solid shaft.

Mapping with Course Outcome 3:- Analyze structural members for deflection, buckling, bending and

Syllabus covered: 2, 5
1. Find Eulers crippling load for hollow cylindrical column of 40mm external diameter & 2.5mm thick.
Take length of the column as 2.5m. It is hinged at both ends. Take E = 2.03 x 105N/mm2. Also
determine the crippling load by Rankines formula using c=3.5 x 105 N/mm2 & = 1/7500

2. Determine the deflection at B and D in the overhanging beam as shown in Fig. Take El = 2.1 x 1010
kN-mm.
