Performance Notes
Aleatoric Echoes: The boxed sections of music are aleatoric

rs
passages - material played with a high degree of choice. The box
echoes what the principle of each section is playing unless or has
fo
recently played. Although pitches and pitch order are fixed, the
pitches may be played in any octave with any timbre, and the rhythm
is flexible. Notes in parentheses are optional. The material can be
er

repeated any number of times to fill the duration of the thick black
line. Feel free to start playing any time after the section leader starts.
s

You may also play slightly ahead of the section leaders entrance. Feel
po

free to collaborate with stand partners and friends. Some echoes have
suggestions for how they should be performed, ex. rapid, repeating
echoes, but they are just suggestions. Try not to play throughout a
m

whole aleatoric passage without breaks. Keep trying until you find
something that sounds meaningful to you.
co

Seagull effect: The seagull effect is a type of stopped harmonic

ct

that is produced by glissandoing down the length of the fingerboard

without changing the spacing of the fingers. The hand starts with an
ta

octave span between the fingers.

on

Bass * : For those notes marked by a star, the second bass player
echoes the first bassists sustained note with a short tone an octave
C

above. This note may be performed with any assertive dynamic,

timbre, or attack.

Section Leaders: May join sections part when not performing

solo.

Conductors Notes: The conductor may actively shape the

phrasing and dynamics of the echo sections or leave them up to the
discretion of individual performers. Although the aleatoric passages
echo the section leaders, they may surpass the dynamic of the
individual section leaders.
