DISCIPLESHIP

Colonel Orlindo Caingcoy

A Disciple is a Learner
A disciple in Christianity simply means a follower of Christ who
desires to learn His ways and apply it to his own life (Philippians 4:9
Paul urged the believer to put into practice what they have learned from
him and from the apostles.). A disciple should be able to develop certain
areas of life to be considered a true and effective disciple, namely:
1. Character a true disciple should have a Christ-likeness character
which includes the fruits of the Holy Spirit written in Galatians
5:22-23. A true disciple should reflect like mirrors the glory of the
Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18). Also, as a disciple, people should see
our faith that the God we are serving is trustworthy to His
promises.
2. Proficiency in the Ministry As a follower of Jesus, we must do
our best in everything we do, especially in exhibiting the spiritual
gifts that God has given us. As a disciple, we must have a
commitment to excellence because this will eventually result to
proficiency in the things that we do.
3. Conviction Personal convictions are essential in spiritual aspects
of life. Our convictions in life will eventually be us in the future;
therefore, if we have the conviction to disciple and to be a disciple,
then we will both be a disciple and make disciples.
4. Perspective Perspective is the ability to see the probable end as
well as the beginning of something. It is also the ability to see the
things of life in Gods point of view. As a disciple, we should act
not only based on the present benefits but also based on the future
outcomes and benefits.

Convictions and perspectives can be built up into our life by the

following some possible procedures, which include: a. using principles
rather than methods, b. focusing on the why of what we are doing, and
c. concentrating on learning about God rather than learning theories
about Him.
To be able to make disciple, we must first become disciples
ourselves. As a disciple of Christ, we must be willing to learn everything
He teaches us through the bible because when a disciple becomes fully
trained he will eventually be like his Teacher.

A Disciple Puts Jesus Christ First in All Areas of His Life

To be a Christian or a disciple requires committing on a particular
decision the Lordship decision. The Lordship decision simply means
that we commit ourselves to prioritize Jesus in all areas of our lives,
whether its spiritual, physical, mental, social, etc. As we commit
ourselves to that Lordship decision, we must see to it that Christ is our
number one priority over everything, while our second priority is far
next to it. The Lordship decision also includes submitting our own will
to God and doing the will of God for us. The moment we commit
ourselves to God, we must realize that Gods will for us is the best for us
and that God can never go wrong on His plans.
In a simpler sense, a Christian or a disciple fully surrenders his life
to Christ. He will fully admit Christs supremacy over him and will fully
follow Christs ways. He also understands that he is no longer living his
life for his own but already for him and for Christ. He will always
consider Christ in everything he do and in every decision that he will
make.
When a Christian or a disciple already made a decision to commit
to that Lordship decision or if he has already decided to make Jesus as
his Lord, he must understand that committing to this type of decision
requires consistency. He must not change his mind and turn his back to
that decision once he has already committed to it. In other words, the
Lordship decision should not be a short-term decision but a lifetime
decision.

To commit in the Lordship decision is never an option to anyone

because it is a must that everyone must commit to. As long as we do
not commit ourselves to that decision, we will always feel that there is
something that is lacking to us because every Christian needs a Lord and
a Savior whose name is Jesus Christ.

A Disciple is committed to a Life of Purity and is Taking Steps to

Separate from Sin.
A true disciple of Christ lives a life of purity and separates himself
from a sinful lifestyle. A Christian can never say that he is a follower of
Christ, yet he continually and deliberately sin. To live a life of purity is
really difficult, especially if it solely relies on the capability of the
Christian. However, to live a life of purity and to turn away from sin
does not rely solely on the Christian because God promises to help.
The first step in living a life of purity is repentance. Repentance
simply means to turn around and leave our sinful lifestyle and it results
to a drastic change in our life. True repentance and conversion should
always come together, we cannot say that we repented and yet we still
live in sin. Repentance should have evidences, which include:
1. A Change of Life anyone who truly repents will eventually focus
on the more important issues of life and he will have a change of
attitude about God. He now considers God as his Lord and Savior.
Also, a truly repented Christian will now pursue holiness and will
no longer live in a sinful lifestyle.
2. A Change of Desire a truly repented Christian will eventually
lose his desires for worldly things and material possession. He will
eventually become more interested about living his life for God.
As apostle Paul urged us to set our minds on the things above and
not on the earthly things (Colossians 3:2).
3. Abhorrence to Sin When we are sealed by the Holy Spirit, we
consciously turn away from sin. We avoid evil in any form in
thoughts, in actions, in speech, and in emotions.

4. Breaking Off Old Influences A truly repented Christian turns

away to his old and bad influences. He focuses his life to God and
to the gospel. God doesnt want us to leave our non-Christian
relationship; He wants us to transform it into a Christian
relationship. As a Christian, we are ought to share the gospel to our
friends and to the people around us.
God desires us to live a life of purity because it is the best for us.
Whether we live a life of purity doesnt really benefit God, it benefits us
as Matthew 5:8 says Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see
God. In our battle for purity, we can always count on the help of the
Holy Spirit. Every time we are tempted, the Holy Spirit is always there
to give us the strength to overcome.
As Christians, we are ought to devote areas of our life to purity,
which includes: 1. we are to be pure in spirit, 2. we are to be pure in
body, 3. we are to be pure in our thoughts, 4. we are to be pure in our
speech, 5. we are to be pure in our dealings with others, 6. we are to be
pure in our business dealings, and 7. we are to be pure in our personal
relations.

A Disciple has a Daily Devotional Time and is Developing in his

Prayer Life.
The bible doesnt given us clear directions about how our
devotions or quiet time to God be done. However, Jesus has given us
clear examples on how He has done His daily devotions and Jesus
practice of devotion shows us how important daily devotions are. As
Mark 1:35 states Very early in the morning, while it was still dark,
Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he
prayed. Jesus seeks the Father early in the morning which tells us that
His devotion to the Father was His main priority.
The purpose of quiet time is for us to have a fellowship with the
Almighty God. The bible teaches that God desires this time with us that
is also the main reason why He has sent His Son to die on the cross.
Because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the salvation we are
enjoying because of that sacrifice, we now have the access to God and
the right to fellowship with Him.
Prayer is our only way to communicate to God. It is the time we
can confess our sins to God, praise God and express our adoration to
Him, thank Him for His goodness and faithfulness, intercede for others
(especially for the poor, for the sick, for the government and its officials,
and for our pastors.), and petition for our needs.
In our devotion and prayer, we should have a definite plan to
follow. It should be done in the most appropriate place and in our most
comfortable time. And of course, during this time we should always let
our hearts be still and always expect His presence.

A Disciple Demonstrate Faithfulness and a Desire to Learn and

Apply the Word of God through Hearing it Preached and Taught,
Reading it Frequently, Bible Study, Scripture Memory, and
Meditation on the Scriptures.
The bible is the only source we have when it comes to doctrines
and principles of faith and church management. Also, a true disciple has
the passion to read and learn from the bible. He regularly reads the bible
and do the best he can to apply the principles of the bible in his life.
Also, a true disciple does not only read the bible but also enjoys hearing
the gospel which is being taught and preached in any place.
Also, a true disciple regularly attends bible studies and memorized
verses that deeply apply to his life. During bible studies, we enjoy
listening to anyone and also shares what he knows when it comes to the
bible. Moreover, a true disciple sets a time to meditate on the scripture.
As Christians, we must understand why God gave us the bible and
the importance of it, which includes the following: a. it reveals us the
God of salvation the bible itself help us learn who God really is,
including His characteristics, the things He can do, the things He did for
us, etc., b. it cleanses us from our sins the bible teaches us the proper
way of cleansing us from our sins which is through repentance, c. it
enables us to grow spiritually the bible helps to grow as matured
Christians, d. it guides and directs us through life the bible teaches us
on how to live our lives to the full and meaningfully, e. it empowers to
evangelize the bible teaches us on how to properly draw people closer
to God, f. it helps us live a life of a disciple the bible will teach us the
proper doctrines of being a disciples.
To sum it all, as a Christian, we must understand that we must
have the desire to learn from the bible and apply what we learn from it.

A Disciple has a Heart for Witnessing, gives his Testimony Clearly,

and Presents the Gospel Regularly with Increasing Skill
Disciple are ought to constantly give a time to witness to others
and must always be ready to share the good news about what Jesus
Christ has done for us. Also, a disciple who witness to others must know
the good news, possess the fruit of the Spirit, and, most importantly,
must brought with him his own testimony about what Christ has done in
his life.
Aside from preaching the gospel, telling our testimony is one of
the best evangelical tools that we can use to effectively witness for
others. Testimony is an act of telling to others how Christ had changed
us since we personally met Him in our lives. Moreover, successful
evangelism normally starts with a well-prepared testimony since we will
have a hard time encouraging others about the goodness of Christ Jesus
if they themselves dont see the change that Christ has done in us.
Testimony doesnt mean spectacular or dramatic changes in our lives, as
long as we present to them the change that Christ has done in us, even
how minor it is.
A plan is necessary every time we witness to others or every time
we evangelize. Any method of evangelism can be done as long as proper
planning has been done. Also, method of evangelism should always
emphasize 6 things which start with the letter D, namely: a. Disease -
we must begin by telling them that all of us were guilty of sin, b. Death
we must educate them that sin could lead to death, spiritual death, c.
Decree they must know that an unholy being cannot be with the Holy
God, d. Deliverer they must be educated that someone paid for the
punishment of our sins, and his name is Jesus Christ, e. Declaration
they must know that salvation is free to those who have faith in Christ

Jesus, f. Deliverance they must know that deliverance comes into our
life when we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and our Savior.
The method of evangelism is not the criteria of being a disciple. As
long as we evangelize and witness to others, we are already doing our
part as a disciple and a follower of Christ. However, a plan must be
prepared so that we can be effective witnesses of the Good News that
Christ has brought us.

A Disciple attends Church Regularly to worship God, to have his

Spiritual Needs met, and to make Contribution to the Body of
Believers
Christian churches are owned solely by Jesus Christ, as he have
said to Peter On this rock, I will build My church and the power of
Hades will never prevail against it. Therefore, as a follower of Christ
we must be part of a church or a congregation, which is His body. The
churchs main purpose is to fulfill the great commission by equipping its
members to fulfill the great commission. We must see to it that the
church in which we belong boldly does its part in the great commission.
The church will give the greatest opportunities to serve the Lord
wholeheartedly. The church will be the one who will make us grow
deeply in Christ and make us fall in love with Christ even more. Also,
the church is the best place we have for us to grow the spiritual fruits
that Christ has promised us in Galatians 5:22-23.
The church also have the a shared responsibility to raise up leader
who would minister different duties in the church itself, such as
evangelism, teaching, ushering, worship ministry, and many more.
As a disciple, we must understand that we need a church and the
church needs us. Therefore, we must see to that we are regularly attend a
church wherein we are comfortable attending to. Also, we must see to it
that the church we are attending to is the best suitable to us since we will
be staying here for the long term. We must also understand there is no
perfect church; therefore, we should not search for one because we
would never find one.

A Disciple fellowship regularly with Other Believers displaying Love

and Unity
Christian fellowship is normally defined by most believers as any
gathering of the church members organized by their church or their
congregation. While fore some Christians, it is any gathering in which
Jesus Christ was the center, whether it is with church mates, family,
friends, classmates, etc. However, in what I had understood, Christian
fellowship is a regular meeting of believers wherein they intensively
study the Scripture to help them grow deeply in Christ.
Christian fellowship should not just be an option but a necessity
for all believers, especially for the new believers, because it is a time for
us to help one another to keep us tied with Christ. Christian fellowship
can also be the best method to make sure that every believer would
continue to follow Jesus and would not be lost.
Christian fellowship would normally take in three (3) forms,
namely: a. what we share in meaning, we share in the grace that Jesus
has shown us in the cross of Calvary; b. what we share out meaning,
what we share with one another or our cooperative service for one
another, c. what we share with meaning, we share our testimonies with
one another so that each of us would be encouraged to continue serving
and following Jesus Christ. Also, love and unity should be the
foundation of every Christian fellowship because we can never
effectively have an effective fellowship if we cant show any love to the
other believers who belong to our group. Also, sharing of the gospel in a
group will never be effective as it can be if we, ourselves, cannot
willingly get along with the other believers.

Final Examination Page 13

DISCIPLESHIP
Colonel Orlindo Caingcoy

Lastly, in every Christian fellowship, there must be a challenge to

grow as believers of Christ and it must motivate all the members of the
group gathering together to continually keep themselves and continually
reach our for others. Also, Christian fellowship should always involve
sharing Jesus Christ. Christian fellowship is not an ordinary gathering,
such as going with mall with friends, playing basketball with friends, or
eating together with someone. The true Christian fellowship has its
purpose which is to challenge the group, motivate the members, and
continually share Jesus, without these three (3), the gathering is just a
normal companionship and not a Christian fellowship.

A Disciple demonstrates a Servant Heart by helping others in

Practical Ways
For most people, serving other people might be the hardest thing to
do. However, if we really want to become a true disciple, we must have
a heart to serve others in the best way we can and in accordance with
how Jesus served the people across all nations. A leader must not only
lead the people but offer his life as a servant for his people. To be an
effective leader, we must remember that we must first be a servant like
the greatest leaders in the bible (Joshua the servant of Moses, King
David the servant of King Saul, and the apostles who are servant of
Jesus Christ).
Jesus Christ gave us the best example on how to serve other
people. He showed us that He is willing to serve, especially His servants
(the apostles), by washing their feet. Also, He showed us that He is
willing to give His life for us by dying on the cross for our sins.
The bible also shows us the biblical characteristics that a disciple
should have for him to be called a true servant, namely: a. humility a
true servant does not boast what he did to serve others, b. diligence a
true servant willingly and active do his work, c. busy serving a true
servant should serve and not the other way around, d. able to teach a
true servant should be able to teach others to be servants as well, e.
patience a true servant can control himself in all kinds of situation, f.
gentleness a true servant should not be rude while serving others, g.
obedience a true servant knows how to willfully obey, h. watchfulness
a true servant is alert in knowing the needs of his master, i. dedicated
a true servant is loves what he is doing which is to serve others, j.
faithfulness a true servant remains faithful to his master at all cost, k.
does not talk back to his master a true servant knows how to respect

his master even how hard it is, l. spirit-filled a true servant has the fruit
of the Spirit written in Galatians 5:22-23.
Serving others should not just be an ordinary role, in fact it should
include a lot of duties, including: a. willingness to do menial task a
servant must be willing to do everything including the things which are
above his qualifications, b. availability a servant should always be
ready to serve others at all times, c. observant he must be alert to give
the needs of his master, and d. do more than what he is asked to do as
servants, we are ought to do more than what our superiors expect us to
do.

A Disciple gives regularly and honors God with His Finances

As disciples, we must understand that we cannot bring to heaven
all of the things that we have here on Earth. Therefore, as disciples we
must invest not here on Earth but on Heaven. There is only one way in
which we can have a guaranteed investment in Heaven, and it is by
giving to the poor (Mark 10:21). Also, giving to the poor is one way of
serving Jesus as he have said in Matthew 25:40 Verily I say unto
you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren, ye have done it unto me. Also, we must understand that to
give is a double-bless we are blessed because we had given and
someone is blessed because they received a blessing from us.
Also, as a Christian, we must understand that we can never out-
give God because God promises a lot of times that He will provide all of
our needs abundantly. Like what He has promised us in Malachi 3:10
Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in
mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I
will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing,
that there shall not be room enough to receive it. With this verse, we
can tell that as we faithfully give to God, He will give us more than what
we have given Him.
The bible teaches us how to give properly. It tells us that: a. we
must give willingly and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) we must not
give under compulsion and we must exercise a willful giving, b. we are
to give joyfully giving should always come from the heart and as we
give, we must give it joyfully, c. we are to give thoughtfully meaning,
we should give what our hearts had dedicated, d. we are to give with a
perfect heart, e. we are to give mercifully we are to share what we
have to the needy, f. we are to give unselfishly we must give in the

best way we can, not the remnants of what we have, g. we are to give
generously, h. we are to give sacrificially, i. we are to give secretly we
must not boast what we have given, because God does not care on the
amount of what we have given.

A Disciple Demonstrates the Fruit of the Holy Spirit by an

Attractive Relationship with Christ and His Fellowman
As Christians we are ought to produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit
which includes: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, humility, and self-control. This fruit is the best evidence
that we are in Christ, since as a Christian we are baptized and sealed by
the Holy Spirit; therefore, it is only necessary that the fruit of the Holy
Spirit will grow in us.
The fruit of the Holy Spirit must be visible in our life and our
neighbors should clearly see it. The fruit must be demonstrated and
should not be hidden. As a disciple, we must fully demonstrate each fruit
boldly to everyone who sees us. Nevertheless, it is impossible for a
believer not to exhibit this fruit because, in the first place, this fruit is an
evidence of changed life and submission of life to Jesus. Therefore,
those who cannot make this fruit visible in their life is not a true disciple.
The fruit of the Holy Spirit is attractive. Without knowing it, the
fruit of the Holy Spirit that we bear can attract people to draw their
selves nearer to God and seek Jesus as their Lord and their Savior. The
moment others see the change that happened in our life after accepting
Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and developing the fruit of the Holy Spirit,
others will be encouraged to seek the things we do to attain that change
which will naturally lead them to Jesus.
Basically, producing the fruit of the Holy Spirit is a difficult thing
to do. We can never produce it by ourselves alone; we need the help of
the Holy Spirit Himself. The Holy Spirit is the One who can give us
everything that we lack, we just need to accept the fact that we need Him
and we need to give Him complete control of our life. Also, we are
ought to make every effort to strengthen our flesh to be able to rebuke
sin and other impurities.
