Corwin Levi's flower paintings transport the viewer into a vortex of nostalgic, youthful
wonderment. The fantastical imagery of his work is so visually commanding that the intensity of
dreams, ideas, and space are literally punched through the canvas.
Levi equates these gaping surfaces to transitional phases in life. The openings produce a sense of
movement and oscillation from whimsical dreams in childhood to the propitious memories of
adulthood. Yet movement is not uni-directional. Each piece evokes within viewers a sense of
time's forward motion and memory's equally powerful backward descent. Impulsive memories
infused with electrifying dream-states engulf each piece as lines twist, sheets fold and crinkle,
and pops of color drip down the canvas. Why not live the way one dreams? In each instance,
adventures of the mind turn from obscure concepts to reality as Levi reflects on the tumultuous
dichotomy between the two.The only way to navigate between the extremes is by crafting the
opened wormholes that allow one to travel systematically through each world.
Levi, who graduated with an MFA in painting form the Tyler School of Art at Temple University
and has a BA in Art and Art History from Rice University, has woven a strong web of knowledge
and experience. A resident of Alexandria, VA, he has shown his work in venues such as the
Torpedo Factory and Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville. His work has travelled nationally to
spaces such as The Lot in Detroit, MI, and Kimmel Harding Nelson Residency in Nebraska City,
NE, as well as to international venues such as the Milkwood Artist Residency in Czech Republic in
January, 2010. For more information on Corwin Levi please visit his website at:
www.radiosebastian.com.
Pam Rogers' work propels viewers into a nurturing, cocoon-like state of being. Using the natural
world as a set focus, both her paper based and sculptural installations evoke a sense of their own
potential for organic growth in the viewer. The quite nature of plants and vegetation transcend
the canvas and become something of an unrequited mentor, demonstrating patience, empathy,
and the innate struggle to survive.
Using germination as a metaphor for the human growth process, Rogers deconstructs the essence
of the human condition. Her instruments of sculptural creation consist of plants, plant pigments,
and soil collected throughout her travels in the US; thus, weaving her own personal experience
of nature's re-birth into her artwork.
Colorado bound as a young child, the interweaving of nature and her individual character are
integral to Rogers' personal and artistic identity. Rogers received an MFA in Painting from
Savannah College of Art and Design and a BA in Art History from Wellesley College in
Massachusetts. She continued her studies in Art History and Anthropology at the University of
Colorado in Boulder and also attained a certificate in Botanical Illustration through a program
based at Kew Gardens, England. She has shown solo exhibits in venues such as Gallery Stokes in
Atlanta, GA, and group shows at the Kibbee Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art, both
also based in Atlanta. For more information on the ceaselessly inspired artist, please

"In Misty China", Chinese brush paintings by Genevieve Lynn, captures moments in
landscape, people and culture. Drawing inspiration from travels to this vibrant country, it
is a tribute to her roots. Chinese symbolism is featured in scenes from Yellow Mountain,
as well as spirited renditions of human and spiritual beings.
In a charming blending of strokes, Genevieve infuses a modern flair into the time honored
culture of Chinese brush painting. With expressive use of color and design, she captures
the essence of graceful moments in life. Simplicity is found in organic forms, bringing
harmony. Lynn uses the traditional tools of ink stone, ink stick made from a pine tree,
xuan paper from mulberry pulp, bamboo brushes and a carved chop seal in her work. As
part of the painting process, she grinds ink in a circular motion, creating an atmosphere
of meditation from which her artistic creations flow.
In 2000 her "Bamboo in the Light" painting received a Merit Award from the Springfield
Art Guild. Lynn completed a residency fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative
Arts in 2004. She received a grant for "Chinese Creatures, featuring the 12 Zodiac
Animals" in 2005. In 2010, her painting "Tall Bamboo Trunk" won an Honorable Mention
award in the Art in City Hall Exhibition in Alexandria, Va. She has displayed her
expressive artwork in The Kennedy Center, Barnes & Noble, the "Tea for Two" invitational
show at Strathmore Hall and ARTSCAPE, Art on the Avenue and Audubon Holiday Fair
festival venues. Her paintings are included in private collections in the US and abroad.
A Chinese-American, she was awarded a Certificate in Drawing and Painting from the
Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC Studies include master workshops with Chinese
brush painters and courses at The Art League School in Alexandria, VA. Lynn is an artist
member of Gallery West and Ellipse Fine Crafts Gallery.

Do you know what randomness looks like? From the movement of the stock market to the Man in the Moon, humans
seem to be primed to find meaningful patterns where none exist. In this talk, Julia will use some basic probability
theory to reveal the startling gap between our intuition and reality when it comes to random chance, and she'll make
the case that this gap is one of the biggest causes of belief in superstitions and the supernatural. She will also draw
on some fascinating research from psychology and biology to explore the question of why our brains might be wired
this way.
After graduating with a B.A. in statistics from Columbia in 2005, Julia Galef spent several years doing research with
social science professors at Columbia, Harvard and MIT, including a year writing case studies on international
economics for Harvard Business School. She is currently a journalist and editor based in New York, focusing on
science, culture, rationality, and design. Along with philosopher of science Dr. Massimo Pigliucci, Julia is the co-host of
Rationally Speaking, the official podcast of the NYC Skeptics, and co-author of the Rationally Speaking blog.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the "New Wave," the National Gallery of Art will screen (for free, as always) the following two
acclaimed documentaries about French directors Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut:
This story of the early camaraderie and later rift between French New Wave founders François
Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard is crafted with archival interviews and footage, as it tracks the
course of the celebrated 1960s film movement.
"'Two in the Wave' honors that collaboration [between Godard and Truffaut] by carefully
recounting its details and arguing for its significance. The films of Truffaut and Mr. Godard stand
or fall by themselves, but together they made history." - The New York Times
Trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlhmZuIsEho
Jean-Luc Godard's exhibition at the Centre Pompidou provides a platform to view the French
New Wave icon musing on a range of topics - young artists, his own vision of the cinéma, as well
as the hopelessness of talking about contemporary art - and then challenging himself in
conversation with Jean-Marie Straub, Danièle Huillet and others.
"Perhaps Jean-Luc Godard never exposed himself as he does here." - director Alain Fleischer
Both of the above screenings will take place at the National Gallery of Art, East Building Concourse Auditorium, 4th Street at
Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Summary: Ferenc Török's debut film Moscow Square seemed to announce the arrival of a new sensibility in
Hungarian cinema, one that corresponded to a generation that had entirely grown up in the post-Communist
era. It's April 1989: Petya, Kiegler, Ságodi and their friends spend their evenings hanging around the clock
tower in Moscow Square, Budapest, while all around them the old regime is on the verge of collapse.
Everyone feels that something is about to happen: the question is whether they make it happen or just wait
for whatever's coming. For some like Petya and his girlfriend Zsófi, the new world means getting out of
Hungary and getting to know the wide world. Few films have more effectively captured that sense of life on
the eve a momentous political and social transformation - that unsettling combination of giddy optimism for
the future and creeping fear of the unknown.
The Heurich House (also known as the Brewmaster's Castle) is a beautifully intact Victorian-age mansion in
Dupont Circle that was built by brewer and real estate magnate Christian Heurich in 1894. Listed in the National
Register of Historic Places, the house is completely fireproof and boasts numerous technological innovations,
making it the "smart house" of its time. Preserved features include 15 fireplaces with individually carved mantles
and elaborate firebacks, hand-painted ceiling canvasses, and original turn-of-the-century domestic collections.
Public access to the house was nearly lost in 2001 when a prospective restaurateur sought to purchase the
mansion and turn it into a private club. The Heurich family stepped in and formed a foundation to preserve the
historic landmark and ensure that it would be kept open to the general public for tours and events.

Every artist has a definition of source; all little pools of the personal that seek to flow
towards a larger body; to somehow return to an undifferentiated unity from which the
familiar can resonate. Source can be one that creates; a maker, or that which supplies
information; a source code. Source can be a point at which substance springs into being or
the energy input point of a system. Nature as refuge from the artificial constructs of
civilization is always present as source. It is from a natural source that humanity has
diversified creating competition and inventing technologies that have brought with them
global problems of massive proportions.

Screen on the Green is a favorite Washington, DC summer tradition. Bring a blanket to the National Mall on a warm
night and watch a classic film on a gigantic movie screen. Films are shown on Monday nights beginning at dusk,
around 8:30-9:00 p.m. People start to claim their spots on the lawn as early as 5:00 p.m. Movies play except in
extreme weather and there are no rain days.
Movie Schedule
* July 12 - GOLDFINGER. Sean Connery stars as 007 in #003 of the James Bond series. Considered one of the
best of all Bonds, it was loosely adapted from Ian Fleming's 1959 novel. (1964) 111 Min.

struggling New York actor who finds himself saddled with two unwanted roommates. (1977) 110 Min.

* August 2 - BONNIE AND CLYDE. Meet Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. They rob banks. Explosive (if
romanticized) crime drama, set during the Depression, follows the Barrow gang's crime sprees from Kansas to

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.
The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.
Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.
Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

Thanks again for your support of StreetWise Partners' programs over the last 12 months. We are excited about further
developing and improving our Career Ventures program, as well as our Alumni workshops over the next year, to better help
motivated low-income individuals. Currently 77% of participants have a job, a promotion or pay-rise, or are enrolled in a
career advancing education program within 6 months of starting our Career Ventures program. We want to get this up to
100%!
I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on July 13th (downtown
Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer ‗roles‘ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!
If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An

First, THANK YOU so much for your help in making this year‘s BBQ Battle such a success! We could not have done it
without you. Know that you made a difference, and we very appreciative of those who choose to serve with us or on our
behalf.
You are receiving this email because you marked on your Volunteer Form (when you signed up for BBQ Battle) that you
were interested in other volunteer opportunities with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. PLEASE read on about
the process to becoming a regular volunteer with us as well as some general volunteer roles that may interest you.
In order to regularly volunteer at a Club, the applicant must complete, sign, and return the application packet. This will
include a registration form (attached), a background investigation consent form (attached), a fingerprint card, AND a copy
of their photo ID. Fingerprint cards can be mailed to the applicant or picked up from a Club location. Attached you will find
a listing of fingerprinting agencies with which you can make an appointment to complete the card.
**Please note that applicants under the age of 18 are not required to undergo a fingerprint check, though they
MUST complete the background investigation consent and permission form for minors and have each form
signed by legal parent/guardian. Be sure to include ALL required information including social security number
and signature(s)**
Volunteer roles vary as specific Club needs change. Applicant's interests and skills may also determine a potential
volunteer role. General opportunities could easily include tutors, mentors, program aides, administrative aides,
maintenance, beautification/repair, events/fundraising, or even pro bono services based on your skills. BGCGW also
offers summer programming at most locations. Summer schedules often times include field trips, educational enrichment
workshops, sports/fitness activities, arts & crafts, and more!
I can help narrow it down by your specific interests or region (MD, DC, VA). Speaking with staff at a specific Club is
another great way to help select a location. We have 8 Clubs in VA, 8 in DC, and 2 in MD. I have attached a listing of our
Clubs for your review. This directory includes Club addresses, phone numbers, and contacts.
Please don't hesitate to let me know how/if I can be of further assistance OR if you have any colleagues/classmates that
may be interested as well. Thanks again for your recent contribution; we hope to see you again soon!!!

CAAB is recruiting volunteers for the DC EITC Campaign tax season (February-April 2010). Our greatest need is for Savings
Promoters – volunteers who would talk to people waiting to get their taxes done about taking money management classes,
savings, direct depositing their refund, and the like. No experience necessary, we train you.
We are also looking for tax preparation volunteers able to work at East of the River tax sites, during daytime hours, or who
speak Spanish, Chinese, or Amharic. It’s a good, low-commitment volunteer opportunity because it’s only 3 months. See the
email below and please pass on to your networks!
Thanks,

This tax season you can be a part of a tremendous effort that brings over $9 million
into the homes of DC’s low-income working families each year.
Make a Difference
Each tax return completed by a volunteer preparer can raise a low-income working family’s income by
more than $6,000.
This income boost can help a working family get out of debt, afford winter coats, pay utility bills, and save for
future goals and needs.
Savings Promoter volunteers* will also be on site helping families use their refunds to move up the
economic ladder!
Or, if you would rather volunteer as a Savings Promoter, you will receive 4 hours of interactive training to enable
you to help clients save their refunds, enroll in Money Management classes and credit counseling, and even open
direct deposit accounts!
Volunteers at some sites will even help eligible clients register for Food Stamps.
And don’t forget to SPREAD THE WORD about this incredible opportunity to anyone who might be interested in
joining the Campaign.

Metro TeenAIDS is seeking a creative company or consultant with a proven track record to revamp anexisting
website (www.realtalkdc. org) to be a leading sexual health resource for young people ages 13 – 24 in Washington ,
DC .
Background: REALtalkDC is a social marketing campaign of Metro TeenAIDS (MTA), a non-profit that educates DC
youth about HIV and STD prevention. REALtalkDC was created to empower young people to Get Tested, Get
Educated, and Use Condoms by using social media to combat HIV/AIDS. These multimedia components include:
1. A text messaging campaign – “Text ‘REALtalk’ to 61827” – to give information to DC youth about where they can
go to get a free HIV or STD test as well as where they can access free condoms. There is also an HIV quiz that raises
awareness of prevention and modes of transmission.
2. A website (www.realtalkdc. org) to provide more comprehensive information about HIV and STDs as well as a
way for health providers throughout DC to find out ways to speak to youth about sexual health issues.
4. City-wide ads displayed on buses, the subway, schools and local businesses to direct them to use the text
messaging campaign and website as resources to find life-saving information.
5. City-wide outreach and activities to provide information, resources, and fun things to do during youth’s free
time. We sponsor city-events, concerts, basketball tournaments and other activities on weekends and in the
summer.
The Project: The REALtalkDC social marketing campaign must have an appealing website in order to increase the
number of young people who are engaged with the brand and therefore have better access to information about
free condoms and testing. The current website is currently hosted by a sexual health media companyout of San
Francisco and Word Press is used to update and edit the content. MTA is open to a completely new website and
structure unrelated to what has been built. The new site needs to be easy to navigate, easy to find and easy to input
and upload information for an MTA staff member to then maintain in the future.
Objectives:
· Provide sexual health information in a fresh and innovative way that will appeal to young peopleages 13 – 24 in
Washington , DC .
· Possess a design that is youthful, directive, and continuous with campaign materials and design.
· Use video and other media platforms to educate youth about HIV and STDs (reference www.youtube.
com/realtalkdc)
· Provide the opportunity for visitors to interact with MTA staff through a Q&A blog or other interactive platform
such as an open online forum.
Timeline:
· A short statement on why this project is of interest and how the company is good at communicating with clients
and at project management.
· A bid estimating costs for the project, detailing as many costs as necessary.
Bids should be sent by email to cpryor@metroteenaid s.org by Friday, January 29, 2010.
