1.0 PURPOSE
This training module has been prepared to help the piping engineer to understand the very
basics of metallurgy and the concepts and considerations to be applied for the selection of
proper piping material for conveying different services.

2.0 SCOPE OF APPLICATION


This module applies to engineers in Piping Design Discipline. This training module for selection
of piping material and metallurgy addresses aspects like mechanical and chemical properties of
pure and alloyed metals, corrosion and its effects, effects of alloying elements in metals,
different types of materials used in piping and basis of selection especially for critical services.
The use of this training module is limited to serve as a guideline. Actual selection of base
material and its grade often depends on the material service summary conditions provided by
process licensor, client or the process group.

3.0 DEFINITIONS
None

4.0 METHOD
The Discipline Manager or a designated person nominated by him will conduct these training
sessions. This handout has been made in a power point presentation format to enable
conducting training sessions on piping material and metallurgy and also to serve as an easy
reference handout that can be given away to the training session participants.

5.0 RELATED DOCUMENTATION

6.0 RECORDS
Training attendance and assessment list and completed Training Course Appraisal Forms shall
be sent to Training coordinator and Personnel department for record. Disciplines shall also keep
in record the individual Training Course Appraisal Forms filled out by each of the participants
who attend such training sessions and a follow-up post evaluation/effectiveness session shall
also be carried later, if required, to address the training session findings and also to take care of
comments/suggestions made by individuals in the individual Training Course Appraisal Forms.
