DATA ON SPECIFICATION FOR BS 8500-2

DESIGNATED CONCRETE MIXES- RC30, GEN & PAV SERIES

COARSE RECYCLED AGGREGATES (RCA & RA)

Typical Mineral Type: A blend of crushed rock/natural gravel and coarse

recycled aggregates; recycled concrete aggregate
(RCA-principally comprising crushed concrete) or
recycled aggregate (RA-aggregate resulting from
the reprocessing of inorganic material previously
used in construction).

Example Sources: C & D recycling location that operates a quality protocols.

Applications: Kerb bedding, backing, blinding & mass concrete

fill, strip footings, mass concrete foundation, trench
fill foundations, house floor with permanent finish
to be added, garage floors (with no embedded
metal), fully buried reinforced foundations, house
drives, domestic and external parking, heavy-duty
external paving with rubber tyre vehicles.

NOTES
; Blends the consistency of primary aggregate with the quality recycled
aggregate thereby giving a high-value product which contributes to the
sustainable construction. Maximum recycled aggregate size shall be
20mm and the use of fine RCA and fine RA (< 5mm) is not covered by
BS 8500.

; Availability and aggregate characteristics must be considered and the

product will contain elements of organic material.

; Day Aggregates coarse RCA and coarse RA conform to BS 8500-2

requirements of Clause 4.3, Table 2 and the composition of recycled
aggregates tested in accordance with BS 8500-2 Annex B.

BS 8500-2, Clause 4.3 general suitability of coarse RCA and RA is to be established

conforming to this part. When the composition of RCA and RA is tested in accordance with
BS 8500-2 Annex B, the test result obtained for each type of particle shall not exceed the
maximum values specified in Table 2. Composites of coarse RCA or coarse RA and natural
aggregates shall confirm to the general requirements for aggregate specified in BS 882.
RCA and RA shall not be used in concrete with a strength class greater than the maximum
specified in Table 3, and shall be used only in the exposure classes specified in Table 3.
Detailed R & D work is currently undertaken by the Kingston University.

When designated concrete is specified, the producer shall use the constituent materials
specified in BS 8500-2 Clause 6.2 to make concrete conforming to Clause 6.3 and to
appropriate options given in the specification.

Both primary and recycled aggregates shall comply with prEN-12620; anticipated to
supersede BS 882 in June 2004. Standard quality control checks should be carried out by
the contractor and these shall be compiled in accordance with the appropriate authoritative
standardization institutions. These shall be delivered promptly to the Overseeing
Organisation on request.
