28.1 SCOPE
(1) This Section of the Code sets provisions for graphical symbols to be used in electrical installations and
degree of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment.
(1) The following references contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute
provisions of the Ethiopian Building Code Standard on Electrical Installation of Buildings:
28.3 DEFINITIONS
(1) For the purpose of this Section of the Code, the following definitions shall apply, in addition to the
terms defined in Section 1:
IP (International Protection) Code a coding system to indicate the degree of protection provided by
an enclosure against access to hazardous parts, ingress of solid
foreign objects, ingress of water and to give additional
information in connection with such protection as specified in
IEC 529:1989.
0 No protection of persons against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure. No
1 Protection against accidental or inadvertent contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure
by a large surface of the human body for example a hand, but not protection against deliberate
access to such parts. Protection against ingress of large solid foreign bodies
2 Protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by fingers. Protection
3 Protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by tools, wires or such
objects of thickness greater than 2.5 mm. Protection against ingress of small foreign bodies
4 Protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by tools, wires or such
objects of thickness greater than 1 mm. Protection against ingress of small solid foreign bodies
5 Complete protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure. Protection
against harmful deposits of dust. The ingress of dust is not totally prevented, but dust cannot enter
6 Complete protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosures. Protection

28.4 SYMBOLS
(1) Symbols for electrical installations and degree of protection provided by enclosures for electrical
equipment (lighting fittings) shall be as indicated in Tables 26.1 and 26.2, respectively.

ANNEX A (INFORMATIVE)
Test Marks
SYMBOL DESCRIPTION
Lighting fittings for discharge lamps with this sign are suitable for direct
mounting on normal or easily inflammable materials, comply with DIN 4102, as far
as their inflammation temperature is at least at 200C, and if they remain stable and
are not subject to deformation upto this temperature.
Lighting fittings for discharge lamps for direct mounting on fixtures and furniture,
which conform in their behavior for inflammation to hardly or normally inflammable
materials, although if these materials being varnished, coated or veneered.
Lighting fittings suitable for mounting on materials with unknown inflammability. The
procedure of mounting is specified.
Impact proof lighting fittings are suitable for gymnastic and sports premises. The
tests are made according to DIN 18032 and VDE 0711.
ANNEX B (INFORMATIVE)
PROTECTION CLASSES
The light fittings are classified in three categories against electrical shocks depending on the type of
protection.
