CHEM 32.1

1. A 25-g food sample was dried, then ashed and analyzed for salt (NaCl) content by the Volhard
titration method. Thirty milliliters of 0.10 N AgNO 3 was added to the ashed sample, the resultant
precipitate was filtered out, and a small amount of ferric ammonium sulfate was added to the
filtrate. The filtrate was then titrated with 3 mL of 0.10 N KSCN to the red endpoint. Calculate the
salt content of the food sample in terms of percent (w/w) NaCl?
2. The zinc oxide content of a burn ointment sample was analyzed. The organic matter in a 0.9280 g
sample was eliminated by ashing, then the zinc oxide residue was dissolved in acid. Treatment
with (NH4)2C2O4 resulted in the formation of the sparingly soluble zinc oxalate. The solid was
filtered, washed and then redissolved in dilute acid. The liberated oxalic acid required 37.80 mL
of 0.01508 N KMnO4. Calculate the percentage of zinc oxide in the medication.
3. A 25.00 mL volume of commercial hydrogen peroxide solution was diluted to 250.0 mL in a
volumetric flask. Then 25.00 mL of the diluted solution was mixed with 200 mL of water and 20
mL of 3 M H2SO4 and titrated with 0.02123 N KMnO4. The first pink color as observed when 27.65
mL of titrant was added. Calculate the normality of the commercial hydrogen peroxide.
4. The iodine produced when an excess of KI was added to a solution containing 0.1259 g of
potassium dichromate required 41.25 mL of Na2S2O3 solution. Calculate the normality of the
Na2S2O3 solution.
5. A 3.026 g portion of a copper (II) salt was analyzed by iodometry. The sample was dissolved then
diluted to 250.0 mL and a 50.00 mL aliquot was analyzed by adding 1.00 g of KI and titrating the
liberated iodine with 23.35 mL of the solution standardized in the previous problem. Find the
weight percent of Cu in the salt.
