usedbronzebushingsinthemaindrumshaft.
Iusedpartsfromahanddrivewormgearwinchforthewormdrive.The
topassemblytipsforwardtopourthebeans.
Hopefullyeverythingelseisprettyobviousfromthepictures.

cooling.Ireallylikehisdesign.Notethatithas2screenlevels,and
itwouldcoolbestwhentheentirescreenisevenlycoveredwith
coffee.Ifyouputalittlecoffeeonthere,coveringpartofthescreen,
itpullsairaroundthecoffeeratherthanthroughit.Thisisalotlike
thecoolbedonabiggerroaster.Soyouneedtobuildthisinthe
correctsizeforyourbatches,orblockoffpartsofthescreenfor
smallerbatches.It'sagreat,supereffectivedesign.

completelyunsuitableforit'snewroleitbecantomeltafterthreeminutes
andbysixminuteswasdistinctlysoft.Ithrewitawayafterafewdays.
Theseconddiscoverywasthatthechamberdoesn'treallyholdenoughbeans
onit'sownforadecentroast.Morethatacoupleofscoopsworthandthey
werespatoutaroundthekitchenthiswastedalotofcoffeeandmentthatI
couldonlyroastinsmallbatches.Ireallywantedafewdaysworthratherthat
justtwocupsofespresso!Thesolutionwastoglueanextensionmadefrom

anddeliveredchaffawayfromtheunit.
Thechaffwasthebiggestproblemasit'shardtofitachaffcollectorandit
blowseverywhere.IntheendImadeasimplelidfromakitchedseiveand
somemeccanno.It'snotidealandifIcanfindsomeflexibleductingi'll
modifyitagainsothattheairisdeleveredawayfromtheroasterbeforeit's
filtered.

aWebergrillrotis.forthedrive.Iusedasquarekeyfromthemotortotheblackironpipeandflangethatisboltedtothebasket.WhenIwantto
emptythebasketIopenthegrillandwithgoodglovesgrabthepipeandbaskethandle,raisingitupenoughtoclearthenotchcutinthegrill
whichwillraisetherotismotorandallowthesquarekeytoslideoutandthedrumiseasilyemptiedintoacoolingbasket.Thedrumhasaflatarea
outsideofthegrillandunderthatIusedateflonskidbearingfromaMaytagdryer.Thismaterialhasnotshownanydeteriorationinthedozenroasts
thatI'vedone.It'simportanttohavethebearingsurfacespacedawayfromthegrillbody.Itwasn'teasytotakemysawsalltomyoldgasgrillbut
whattheheck,Iwantedannewoneanyway.Holeswerecutforthedrumandforasmallductboosterfanmountedontheoppositeandlowsideof
thegrill.Theopendrumsideiselevatedtoaidintheupwardflowofheatedairwhichisfurtheraidedbythefanandaluminumpipeandreflectors
aroundtheburnersandoverthemonthesideoppositethedrum.Thelidopeningisampletoview,pullsamplesandbestofalltowarmmyfingers
whenit's10F.Iuseathermometerinthedrumandonetowardthetopofthegrill.Thissystemhasworkedquitewellwithconsiderationformycrude

ThisframewasbuiltbyScottJensenofOklahoma.

coffeeshouldberoomtemperaturein5minutes.

ThisistheSSStovetopPopcornPopperwesell,drivenbya
drillgreatdesign!Here'sthedetailsonitfromtheLone

"First,alittlebackground.Idecidedtobuildaroaster
becausetheHearthwareroastersIusedbeforethat(threeof
them)onlylastedaboutayearorso,andthenthefanwould
giveout.Ialsowantedaroasterthatwouldhandlelarger
batches.SoIwentonlinetoSweetMaria's(whereelse?)and
orderedanSSStovetopPopcornPopper.Imodifiedthe
popperandbuiltthedrillstandinMarchandAprilof2004,
andit'sstillgoingstrong.
Whatyouseeinthepictures...
Thetoppictureistheentiresetupinmygarage.Thepopper
issittingonatwoburnerelectricstoverunningat700watts
perburner.ThethermometerisaTecPel316,dualchannel,
TypeKdigitalthermometer.ItalsohasanRS232serialport
thatcanbeusedtoconnectittomyPC.Withit,Icannot
onlyrecordandgraphmyroastprofiles,butalsothecool
downcycleatthesametime.TheshinySSitemnexttothe
thermometerisacanningfunnelthatIpickedupatmylocal
AceHardwarestore.Itworksgreatforpouringbeansintoa
millthathasasomewhatnarrowopening.
IpickedupthedrillatthelocalHomeDepot(thecheapest
variablespeeddrilltheyhad),andbuiltthestandforitfrom
scrapsaroundmywoodshop.Theknobbelowthedrillis
usedtocontrolthespeed.I'vefoundthat60100rpmworks
best.Forconsistentlyevenroasts...thesmallerthebatch,the
highertherpm.
AlthoughIdon'thaveapictureyet,Itookasomewhat
differentapproachtocooling.Insteadofputtingsomekindof
basketontopofafan.Ibuiltanenclosedboxwithascreen InthealmosttwoyearsthatI'vebeenusingit,I'veonly
forthebottom.AndthenattachedmyShopVactothelid. encounteredthreeproblems:
ThisnotonlysucksaLOTofairthroughthecoffee,butalso
removesvirtuallyallofthechaffwithoutgettingitalloverthe 1.WhenIfirststartingusingit,Iquicklyfoundthatthecast
garage.Theboxwillcoolthecoffeefromanindicated bevelgearswereveryroughandtendedtocatchandjam.To
temperatureof360380degrees(withthetemperatureprobe fixit,IsmoothedthegearsusingmyhandydandyDremel
about1/2"orlessabovethehotcoffee)tolessthan100 tool.

Normally,Iroastonepoundatatime.Inourhouse,thislasts heldtheplasticwindowinplace.Theknobsplitfromtheheat
aboutfivedays. andthescrewfellout.Ifixeditbypoprivetingapieceof
sheetsteelinplaceoverthewindowopening.Afterthefirst
fewroasts,youcouldn'tseethroughthewindowanyway.
3.Keepingitclean!Thepotiseasy,butbecauseoftheway
it'sdesigned,thelidisapain!Anyadviceinthisareawould
begreatlyappreciated.
It'sbeenquiteanadventureandeducationroastingherein
Flagstaff.We'reatanaltitudeof7,000feetandtheweather
canbeextreme.Temperaturesrangefromthehundredsin
thesummertobelowzerointhewinter.Witha10to30mph
wind,youcanimaginethewindchill!Humidityrangesfrom
100%downto3%.Inasingleday,wecangetatemperature
swingfromthe20'suptothe70's.50degreesinlessthan24
hours.This,ofcourse,hassomeinterestingeffectson
roasting.Brewingisfuntoo,sincewaterboilsatabout199
degreeshere.

it'scapableof42,000BTU'S.Ithasfourindependantlycontrolled
castburners,whichIcoveredoverwithceramictiles.Thedrum
itselfIwillhavetogetbacktoyouonthisweekend.I'llmeasureit
andsendthespecs.Itwillroast7lbs,butdoesit'sbest,Ifeel,in
the4.5lbrange.ThatswhereIhavethemostcontrolloverthe
