@@ BRITISH ean comes se este ies @@ COUNCIL Porte worn britisheounciLorg.eg British Council Environmental Policy in Egypt March 2015 Introduction We recognise that our activities can impact on the environment and are committed to improving our environmental performance. Corporately we have introduced an environmental policy, which has committed us as a responsible intemational organisation to managing and reducing the negative environmental impacts created through our activities worldwide. In the UK this will be achieved through the implementation and review of objectives and targets within the framework of an Environmental Management System (EMS) In Egypt, we will work towards improving our environmental performance using the Overseas Environmental Framework Too! (EFT) which requires us to report formal progress in a number of key areas including our own staff awareness and understanding of environmental Impact of our actvities and behaviours, The areas in which we are committed to increasing our environmental performance include a reduction in the use of energy consumption, reducing the amount of waste we produce and recycling wherever possible. We are also committed through a revised procurement policy to ‘work with suppliers who take into consideration the protection of the environment. The policy applies to the all-Egypt operation: all the premises for which we are responsible and all activities carried out by us. Responsibilities: © Accountability for the Environmental Policy lies with the Country Director and Designated Director ‘+ The EFT Country Coordinator is responsible for: © managing the implementation of the EFT in Egypt leading the Green Team Champions in supporting the delivery of the EFT © Completing the EFT assessment process and report to the Regional Co- ordinator + The Green Team Champions will © Work with Country Coordinator to promote awareness of the issues © Contribute to the development of the environmental policy and country action plan © Tolead on specific tasks in support of the EFT. @@ BRITISH Rees caec Co aaa @@ COUNCIL T2000 13788 Informstionabrnshcounci.org.e9 wwwbritishcouncilorg.eg ‘+ Allstaff has a responsibilty to up-hold the policy and to take actions in support of improving our Environmental performance Line managers are asked to make sure that the local environmental policy is part of the induction of all new staff We are committec to: ‘+ Reviewing and understanding the environmental impacts arising from our activities + Ensuring that we understand and comply with all relevant environmental legislation, and with any other environmental requirerents or commitments; + Setting environmental objectives and targets for activities having the most significant impact, + Ensuring that cur policy is understood, implemented and maintained by all our colleagues and is supported by suitable education and training; ‘+ Communicating our aspirations and progress in reducing our environmental impact to interested partes, including suppliers, local authorities and project partners and taking accaunt of the goals and aspirations of those organisations; + Planning our p-ojects in a manner which takes account of their environmental impact, ‘seeking to reduce such effects as much as possible ‘+ Achieving Level 3 of the EFT by September 2015 Our current focus is to: ‘+ Minimise the use of materials, energy and water in our premises. ‘+ Minimise the generation of waste and implement re-use or recycling initiatives wherever possible + Measure the carbon impact of our operation and identify and implement means of reducing our carbon footprint + Incorporate environmental considerations into procurement decisions and use our Influence with suppliers and contractors to deliver more sustainable outcomes, + Monitor the environmental impact of our business travel and priortise the use of environmentally friendly transport + Reduce our trevel needs by encouraging alternative mechanisms to deliver our work effectively e.g. greater use of video- or tel-conferencing, ‘+ Use our skills and strengths as an organisation to promote key sustainability messages locally, e.g. by engaging with the climate change agenda, ‘+ Introduce and promote environmental monitoring as an element of our approach to project management Date: March 2015 Mark Stephens Country Director Egypt
