Scottish ministers
discuss biomass
with industry

positive endorsement from Scottish
Government ministers of the
importance of getting the greatest
carbon and employment benefit out

£4 MILLION REGENERATION
OF PAISLEY TOWN CENTRE
Last month the Scottish Minister
for Housing and Communities,
Mr Alex Neil, visited the iconic
site once occupied by Paisley’s
most famous department store,
to witness demolition works and
the start of a £4 million project
to restore Scotland largest town
centre.
The project which is being
spearheaded by a partnership
company made up of Renfrewshire
Council and Scottish property group,
Park Lane involves the development
of a four acre site in Paisley’s town
centre which has lain derelict and
boarded up since Arnott’s closed its
doors to shoppers in 2003.
The site, which has already received
a mixed use planning consent, was
acquired in March this year by
Renfrewshire Council assisted by
private sector investment from Park
Lane and a £1.83 million cash boost
from the Scottish Government’s
Town Centres Regeneration Fund.
The regeneration funding package
was one of the largest to be awarded
by the Scottish Government.

Visiting the development today
Alex Neil said, “The Scottish
Government has invested £1. 8m
to support this flagship project
in Paisley. Town centres are the
cornerstone of communities across
Scotland and are a key element
of the economic and social fabric
of the nation. Paisley is one of
nearly 90 towns across the country
that have benefited from this
government’s £60 million town
centre regeneration fund.”
Commenting joint managing
director, Brian Clarke said, “We
are pleased that the first phase of
enabling works are now starting
on site. Over the next few months
we will be working up a new
master plan for the redevelopment
and consulting with various local
stakeholders on this.”
Around 100 new jobs are
set to be created during the
initially construction phase,
and an additional 300 when
the site is fully occupied.

THE

The Engineering Council (EC) and the
Society for the Environment (SocEnv)
have renewed the Agricultural
Engineering Institution (IAgrE)
professional licences for a further 5
years.
The EC licence is granted to
professional engineering institutions to
authorise them to assess applicants for
inclusion on the Engineering Council’s
register of professional engineers and
technicians. The licence gives IAgrE
the authority to assess the competence
and commitment of candidates for
registration as chartered engineer,
incorporated engineer and engineering
technicians to qualified members.
IAgrE is a founder constituent body
of the Society for the Environment
(SocEnv), an umbrella body for
environmental professionals. It was
formed to provide an internationally
recognised professional qualification
for environmental practitioners (CEnv)
and IAgrE is able to offer the award
to suitably qualified and experienced
members.

Skills shortages in the UK continue to decline

The Institution of Agricultural
Engineers (IAgrE) endorses research
carried out by the Confederation of
British Industry and the EDI (the
vocational qualifications body) that
has revealed over 350 organisations
are struggling to find staff with
skills in science, technology,
engineering and maths (STEM),
while even more companies expect
to experience staff skill shortages
in the next three years.
“The government needs to do
more to promote basic skills in
schools. It is vital young people
leave school and university with the
right skills to succeed at work. It is
becoming increasingly difficult to
find people with the right technical
or engineering skills and the new
government should look to actively
encourage the take up of STEM
subjects in schools,” said Chris
Whetnall IAgrE’s Chief Executive.
“Our members report it is increasingly
difficult to recruit people with the
right level of science and technology
skills and as the economy recovers
it is going to become even harder.
We are lagging behind other
European countries so we need the
Government to implement changes
before we lose out to our global
competitors,” added Chris.

A new era for
English forestry?
ConFor has expressed its hope that
the new English forestry minister,
Jim Paice, will steer a successful
path through the significant
challenges that government and the
forestry and wood sector will face in
the coming years.
“Large cuts in public expenditure and
a desire to rebalance the economy
between the public and private
sectors will have major repercussions
for the English forestry and wood-
using sector”, explained ConFor
chief executive Stuart Goodall.
“Traditionally government has
wielded significant influence in the
sector, but the scale and focus of that
influence is set to change. Jim Paice
is no stranger to the sector and it is
hoped that he will work closely with
ConFor to find a successful path.”
Stuart spoke after meeting with the
minister to discuss a range of key
issues vital to the short and medium-
term success of the sector in England
and beyond.

FOR HAMPTON COURT
The RHS selected Rolawn’s Medallion

At the meeting, the minister agreed to
establish an industry-led task force to
examine deregulation in the forestry
sector, and to seek to develop a
presumption in favour of planting and
managing forests.
Finally, the minister expressed
interest in learning about the results
of work that ConFor is undertaking
on carbon trading for solid wood and
at incorporating embodied carbon in
wood within the Code for Sustainable
Homes – work that FC Wales has
been championing.

UPWARDS FOR
J&S VICARY
Last month Fencing News caught up
with Jon Vicary at the Driffield Show,
where for the second year running
he judged our popular fencing
competition.
A lot can happen over a year and
Jon was keen to tell us all about the
developments within the company:
“The business is growing quickly,
especially since we’ve been granted
several wood chipping contracts;
including the Yorkshire Purchasing
Organisation’s (YPO) wood fuel supply
contract last autumn and the EPOS
wood energy supply contract as well.
We have also just applied to bring in
another large Jenz chipper into our
East Yorkshire region.”
Its all systems go at J&S Vicary and
with the sale of woodchip increasing
throughout the country; the company
have seized their opportunity to
expand further.
Jon continues: “Chris Vicary who
recently completed an Engineering
Degree at Harper Adams is now on
board in the business and has made
good progress taking over the day
to day management of our family
company.”
On show day, Jon and his team
were exhibiting in the wonderful new
forestry area and were entertaining

the crowds with live wood chipping
demonstrations. For the majority of the
day however Jon along with Alec Swan
judged our prestigious competition,
again in the forestry/fencing area.
Speaking after the contest Jon
commented: “The standards were
incredibly high this year and we’ve
really managed to draw in the crowds
too. The sponsors, judges and
competitors all seemed very pleased
with the outcome and how it was all
organised. Unfortunately the ground
was hard, which is a factor that the
show committee are looking to address
next year could attract more teams to
the competition in the coming years.”

THE SAFETY OF AUTOMATED GATES
Peter Mepsted assesses the latest tragic news relating
to automated gates and the safety implications posed
In the April edition of Fencing News,
the Health and Safety section
was dominated by the news of the
prosecution of a Hampshire gate
company. This followed the death of
a nine year old, who was crushed by
the opening of automated gates at a
property in Poole, Dorset.
Tragic and horrifying though the
incident was, I did not expect to
hear the news of two more similar
incidents, both resulting in the deaths
of young children, so soon. If you are
not aware, Semilia Campbell (aged
6) and Karolina Golabek (aged 5)
died in separate incidents where they
were crushed by automated gates in
Manchester and Bridgend in early
July. Naturally, I am unable to pass
comment on the circumstances of
either incident and will advise readers
of the outcome of investigations in due
course. That said our condolences
must be offered to those affected by
these awful incidents.
Having previously written about the
subject of ‘How Safe is Fencing?’ I was
reasonably sure that, as an industry,
fencing (and its associated processes)
was relatively safe and the incidence of
death or injury relatively low. Clearly,
these recent events indicate that there
is potential danger from automated
gate systems, particularly to persons
who are vulnerable.
From my perspective, the telling point
is who has actually been harmed - in
all cases young children!
In the Hampshire case, the HSE stated
that one of the fundamental issues was
the lack of a suitable and sufficient
risk assessment. Accordingly, when
considering factors in risk assessment
it is necessary to think ‘out of the box’

and take account not just of the obvious
risks but also of the unexpected and
seemingly unlikely.
Children are naturally inquisitive and
have a distinct lack of intuitive regard
for their safety. They will also act
impulsively and without due regard to
the consequences of their actions. A
moving gate will naturally attract their
attention and be a source of interest.
Other members of the public may
also be vulnerable, for many reasons,
and their safety must be taken into
account.
Compliance with all of the relevant
regulations, directives and standards
can be achieved and yet still undone
by the outside actions of others!
From the account of the Dorset
incident, and with the benefit of
hindsight, it is obvious that with some
minor alterations, the incident could
have been easily avoided.
I also feel that the whole process from
design right through to installation
and commissioning needs an ongoing
dialogue between all relevant parties
to ensure that any design changes do
not compromise on the safety of the
finished product.
Back in February 2010, the HSE

Glastonbury Festival 2010
AJ Charlton & Sons were ever present
at this years Glastonbury Festival as
their timber was displayed around
Worthy Farm in its most natural, and
yet innovative form.
Having supplied the festival with
tonnes of their finest timber in
its original state, the craftsman
at Glastonbury used their artistic
expertise to create fences, benches,
picnics, tepees, wigwams and even
cabin-like buildings.
Each structure was produced using
the outer part of the trees, otherwise
known as Slabwood, and therefore
managed to accomplish a rustic
look which suited the agricultural
landscape perfectly.
All of the red wood that was supplied
from soft coniferous woodland arrived
on site completely untreated and from
within 100 miles of the Somerset
area: the most natural, locally sourced
wood you could ever want.
Sales and Marketing Director Michael
Charlton was pleasantly surprised
with the end result: “I was amazed
at the variety and quality of the
products. They looked so unique;
very chunky and rustic looking.
Seeing them around the festival site
has indeed inspired me to look into

Harry Potter and
the Lion Enclosure
If you are a Harry Potter fan, then
we’re sorry to say this isn’t the title
of the next Harry Potter novel. It’s
two of the more unusual uses that
Telegraph Poles supplied by Calders
and Grandidge have been used for
in 2010.
Earlier this year Calders and
Grandidge supplied 100 telegraph
poles to the set of the final Harry
Potter movie, where they were used
to build part of the castle. This is not
the first time that telegraph poles
have been supplied for use in films,
but it is certainly the one with the
highest profile.
The poles supplied for the erection
of the Lion Enclosure form part of
the state of the art lion enclosure
recently built at the Yorkshire Wildlife
Park near Doncaster. The Lions
being housed there were rescued in
February 2010 from Oradea Zoo in
Romania, where some of the lions
had spent the whole of their lives
in an area smaller than the average
living room.

Calders have also recently supplied
another batch of poles to Monkey
World where the poles are used to
build the enclosures, and to provide
the various inmates with interesting
structures to live an exercise in.
Over the years their poles have been
used to fly the flag for Britain, when
the 52 flagpoles on the Mall were
replaced for the Queens Jubilee, as
replacement masts on yachts, to
erect a bat bridge over the M1, an
auditorium at Hertfordshire University,
and of course, on hundreds of farms
across the country for the erection of
Pole Barns.

The best a fence can get
Victoria Poolman travels to Stockbridge to meet Vince Murphy of Kiwi Fencing Ltd
These days, we all try to source as
much from within the UK as possible,
from home-grown timber to British
strawberries. However, there are
certain things you just can’t get on
our little island, and Vince Murphy is
one of them. Luckily for Hampshire
folk, that problem’s been solved...
Born and bred in New Zealand, Vince
moved over to the UK in the harvesting
season of 1990, and recognising
the gap in the market for agricultural
fencing, he started Kiwi Fencing by
the end of the following year.
Focusing primarily upon stock fencing,
rabbit and deer-proof systems and
specialising in post and rail, Vince
now has a team of up to four Kiwis
on-board – all fully-qualified in the
traditional New Zealand style of
fencing, which differs somewhat
from our native form of post and wire.
Vince tells me:
“Back home, we learn how to fence
great long stretches, but here in the
UK it’s more about winding twists and
turns and going around the perimeters
of fields. We pull up the fences in the
middle rather than the ends, the struts
are lower down and we use strictly
high-tensile wire. The result is a much
stronger, more durable fence.”
A popular character, Vince has no need
to advertise. His business is clearly
successful and he’s more than happy
working one team: “I tried with two but
customers prefer me to be on each job
and to be honest, so do I. I have no
aspirations to operate several gangs
and grow the business to massive
levels, I’m much happier as things are,
if you get larger than five employees
things start to get complicated with
insurance and Health & Safety, so I’d
rather not overextend myself, it’s more
important to have a good relationship
with my customers.”
Despite the recent ripples in the
economy, agriculture has remained
strong and Vince has recently updated
all his vehicles, including two new
post bangers and a new trailer.

“The one thing I am struggling with
is steel prices”, Vince says. “The cost
of wire is very volatile due to supply
and demand from overseas, and the
occasional case of wood rot is also a
cause for concern. I moved to a new
supplier at just the right time when
the timber treatment changed and
have faired well as a result, but I know
others haven’t been so fortunate;
some suppliers aren’t making the
effort they should be in terms of
traceability and accountability and
are avoiding their responsibilities,
which isn’t right.”
Doing his most to ensure quality
through and through, Vince won’t
fence with spruce due to the
difficulties in treating it, and he
makes sure that all his timber is
home-grown, with the bulk of Kiwi’s
timber materials coming from Wales.
As a result of his manner and
dedication, business is booming, and
the team is currently in the midst of
installing 8000m of stock fence on
local private estates.
Despite hailing from halfway across
the world, Vince tries to keep his
work within the county, though he
also fences in Surrey, Wiltshire and
Sussex... with the occasional jaunt
to the south of France thrown in: “I
have a customer who bought a farm
over there and asked me to go out
and erect 4000m of deer fencing
around his vineyard, which took
about a month”, he says (with a smile
on his face). Unlike some fencing
contractors, Vince’s work doesn’t
dry up in winter months, with him
shepherding 2500 lambs over the
cold season, including the installation
of large amounts of electric fencing
across stubble turnips planted by
farmers to reinvigorate the ground, it
helps to keep the competition bay.
Obviously taking great pleasure
working in the stunning area in which
he lives, Vince, his wife Mandy - who
does all the books, website creation,
cleaning and credit control(!) - and
their family (plus Phoebe the pig)
live in a stunning plot overlooking
the rolling Hampshire hills. With the
stock yard close by and several very
loyal customers just five minutes
down the road, he’s certainly got a
good thing going:
“It was just a case of being in the
right place at the right time. There’s
not too much competition locally,
and moving here around 13 years
ago was one of the best things we
did – the location is perfect and
Vince with his fence
there’s plenty of work to ensure that
the business grew organically. I made
sure we never took risks and hired all
our equipment until we could afford
to buy our own, but twenty years on,
things are still going really well and I
hope that it continues to be a family-
run business in years to come.”
Although he’s keen to dumb down his
success, Kiwi Fencing Ltd has worked
on some very prestigious locations
in recent times. A certified MOD
contractor, Vince has also provided
an abundance of fencing to Leckford
Estate (or ‘The Waitrose Farm’, as it is
better known), Sainsbury’s, a host of
liveries, polo and stud farms, as well
as looking after the needs of six local
National Trust properties, including
The Vyne and Mottisfont. Nice work
if you can get it – and I have no doubt
that there will be plenty more of the
same to come.
With a solid reputation to his name,
it’s easy to see why the locals won’t
settle for anyone but Vince. Which
just goes to show why it’s a good job
we import some things...

Now in its 135th year, Driffield
Show is the biggest one-day event
of its kind in the UK, and has made
an indelible mark on the agricultural
circuit. On the 21st of July this year,
the ever-popular traditional farming
event drew in crowds of over 25,000
people, with attractions ranging from
brass bands to livestock parades.
Each year, Fencing News add to the
spirit of the show with their very
own fence-building competition,
organised in association with Gripple,

Revered by fencing contractors and
the public alike, this time around
the contest pitted four two-person
teams against each other, each with
the challenge of building a fence

LUCIE CARTER TALKS WITH JOHN THOMPSON
Back in the 60’s there was a young
boy who knew exactly what he
wanted to be, but after studying for
his A-Levels in his teenage years
John Thompson’s plan of going into
the merchant navy was somewhat
squandered in the late 70’s after he
began to follow in his fathers fencing
footsteps.
John’s late Father Jack Thompson
founded what was then known as
J R Thompson and Co when John
was small child, but in 1971 as it
gently evolved into something more
substantial, gaining local authority
and contract work, Dinnington
Fencing was eventually born.
John tells us more about those
earlier times: “I basically went from
doing A-levels to digging holes and
I spent my first few years learning
the trade before eventually moving
into management. In Later years we
moved into the high-end market of
work, initially fitting basic security
fencing and then merging into
specialists work.”
Today Dinnington Fencing and its
staff of 17 employees are one of
the original Betafence PRO-net™
contractors excelling in higher-end
specifications, gate automations,
automated integrated systems, ball
court systems and electric security
fencing. Much of the company’s trade
is carried out throughout the North
East, although they often travel to
Cumbria and North Yorkshire if the
work is right. In recent times they’ve

Territorial Army sites.

Some five years ago this importer got
into financial difficulties and it soon
became apparent that an opportunity

existed to take over the import and
distribution of the Centurion range.
From that situation 5 years ago where
we began to import the products,
we have since become the sole UK
distributor for Centurion.
DFC Automation is now where John’s
dreams of expansion now lie. In May
this year the company exhibited in
partnership with Centurian at the
annual IFSEC event and John is fast
becoming an unofficial spokesman
for the International company.
“We’re keen to stress that while the
Centurian equipment was always
good, it didn’t stand out from
anything else. The main supply of
Gate Automation equipment usually
comes from Italy with a small amount
from the UK, which was always as
good, if not better then theirs. But
in the last two years Centurian has
upped the range to basically be
ahead of everybody else’s.”
So what exactly makes DFC
Automation and Centurian products
so successful? The answer is
easy: Given the recent tragedies
surrounding automated systems
in both Wales and Manchester,
the issue of health and safety is
now paramount and is something
that John and the company strictly
adhere to.
“All their motors offer a host of
features that nobody else’s does, but
more importantly they offer a higher
degree of safety, which is vital.
The motors can be configured to
suit any type of gate and they have
anti-crush sensitivity built in which
most motors don’t have, clearly
something that those particular
gates were desperately in need of.
Most gate motors are like an electric
press, they’ll just keep pushing and
pushing. Whereas our motors, if
contractor
they detect an obstacle, they sense
it and back off.”
Whilst listening to John talk about
such issues the passion and
expertises he exudes are incredibly
genuine. He’s keen for the industry to
clean up its act and in order to make
his mark; he’ll continue to promote
the DFC/Centurian systems.
“To know that we have a product
which is intrinsically safer than the
rest on the market it spurs me on
to take it further. There’s an estate
round here called Darras Hall, which
is where many footballer players
and prominent business people live
and if you drive down the streets
probably 50% of the gates in front
of the mansions don’t comply
with standards and have potential
entrapment areas and god knows
what else. I know that the Centurian
range is controllable and brilliantly
clever stuff and that when installed
properly will prevent any accidents
taking place.”
John is also planning on introducing
a new service into the work
that Dinnington Fencing do, he
explains: “What we’re going to
with Dinnington for sure, is offer an
advice consultancy on any gates you
have. We will offer to look at the
systems submit a report and offer
them the service to provide gates
that fully comply with the current
regulations.”

Chris Berry talks with James Pickering in Clitheroe
Five years ago James Pickering
and his business partner Andrew
Tolson set up J. Pickering Forestry
& Grounds in Clitheroe. The local
landscaping company that James
had worked for had just gone bust
and he decided it was time to work
for himself.
‘That’s where the work and the
money seems to be at the moment.
We’re breaking into the equestrian
market more and more with post
and rail and working on such as
ménages. We have done a couple of
those so far. It’s good work as well
as being interesting.’

The pair were working on a domestic
job when I visited, however whilst
the domestic work makes up a
reasonable proportion of their
business James and Andrew have
moved more into the equestrian and
agricultural market in recent times.

company called Clitheroe Tree
Surgeons which employs another
two lads working full time also.
Having started out as a greenkeeper,
back in his home county of Dorset,
James came north some years ago.
‘I studied for my NVQ in Sports
Turf Management at Spasholt
College in Hampshire and took my

spare time they have both James
and Andrew are exceedingly keen
mountain bikers.
‘We could do some really good
tracks with this machine (the Kanga
Kid). It will be perfect for it.’
And if James is not found with a
spade or some sort of fencing post
in his hand, and he’s not mountain
biking, he’s usually got his fishing
rod in his hand. No funny remarks
please.
James’ partner is Caroline, who
runs her own company called
JITTERBUGS which is a ‘move and
groove’ class for children and their
son Alfie who recently turned 2 is
‘dying to get into the fencing and
landscaping business’ says James.
Andrew is a local lad from Clitheroe.
He studied for his National Diploma
in Countryside Management at
Newton Rigg College.

The Great Yorkshire
Show Ends on a High

Glorious sunshine brought the
152nd Great Yorkshire Show to a
close, with the outgoing President,
Richard Elmhirst handing over the
staff of office to his successor, Sir
Ken Morrison.
Attendance figures were amongst
the highest in the event’s history,
131,382 over the three days which
is a rise for the fourth year in
succession. The record stands at
135,111, established in 2006 and
last year’s figure was 130,731.
Bill Cowling, Show Director said:
“This has been one of the finest Great
Yorkshire Shows I can remember. The
atmosphere has been tremendous,
the standard of entries across
the competitive classes has been
outstanding, and we have achieved
another superb attendance figure.
He added: “Looking at the farming
industry as a whole, there’s certainly
a growing confidence, and as one of
the UK’s top three agricultural shows,
it is our responsibility to help foster
that confidence. Our work supporting
the industry goes on year round, and
we’re already looking forward to our
autumn event, Countryside Live.”
Guests over the three days included
HRH The Princess Royal, who
delighted the crowds as she toured the
showground. Part of her visit included
presenting Loraine Homer of Oxon
with the Archie Thomlinson trophy for
the champion ridden horse as well as
meeting livestock exhibitors, visiting
the hound section and watching
equine classes. On Thursday the
Defra Secretary, Caroline Spelman
visited the show meeting exhibitors
and touring stands.

2010 DRIFFIELD FENCING COMPETITION :
THE MAN CANNOT
BE STOPPED!
Last month we hosted our annual
fencing competition at the Drifield
Show and what a show it was! Once
again the crowds were out in full
force to witness a contest of strength,
structure and speed.
Based within the newly improved
Forestry, Fencing and Renewables
Area, the competition showcased just
how much talent is needed to erect
a standard wire fence across what
proved to be particularly hard ground.
The event was a real extravaganza
with eager spectators coming from
all corners of the showground to see
the winners crowned champion. This
year’s winner was once again Mike
Ford who wowed the crowds with
his pace and overall quality and went
home with the £750 prize money.
Commenting on his big win Mike
was surprisingly modest: “I wasn’t as
confident as I was last year, because I
did it so fast. I wanted to achieve the
same at this year’s event. It was such
a hot day and the ground was pretty
tough but once again it was a really
good competition and I was up against
some real challengers, especially the
young farmers who have improved

a lot! Judges Jon and Alec had a
tough job to do on the day and since
standards were so high they took time
to deliberate and analyse each fence
thoroughly.
2nd place was awarded to Daniel
Critchlow who received £500 for his
brilliant efforts and 3rd place went
to Frontline Fencing who were given
£250 prize money. A special prize
of £150 was given to GW Mook for
the most improvement on last years
competition.
Overall the competition was a great
success as was the Forestry, Fencing
and Renewables Area. David Tite
Show Director told us: “Exactly Chairman’s lady, Janet Coleman presenting the
winner to Mike Ford and nephew, David
25,370 people came through the
gates on the day and enjoyed the
glorious weather. The forestry area
was particularly popular because of
the live demonstrations and of course
the fencing competition. We are now
looking at how we can improve it even
further!”

New menace to the UK Fencing

industry : Zombie companies
There are now 178 companies
in the UK Fencing industry that
are “Zombie” businesses. These
companies have seen their
performance deteriorate to such an
extent that they now exist merely to
pay off their debts and survive.

David Pattison, author of the new

Plimsoll Analysis, explains, “These
companies are in a state, posting
growing losses and, despite the
obvious freeze in the credit markets,
increasing their debts. They are
Zombie businesses with debts at
an average of 45% of turnover, they
exist to service their out of control
liabilities. Many are also using their
suppliers to finance their growing
losses, taking twice as long as to pay
their bills as the industry average of
72 days.”

Pattison also explains the other major

problems these Zombies are facing,
“They are falling behind the rest and
their productivity is well below the
industry average. It’s hard for them
to compete as their cost base is just
too high.”

So can these Zombies be saved?

Pattison is clear that not all will
survive and those that do have a
lot of pain ahead, “The first thing
they need to do is sort out their
immediate finances. They have to
convince their banks and suppliers
to keep supporting them or not
pull the plug. If they can pull that
off then the hard work really starts.
They urgently need to stem their
losses and control costs.”
However, Pattison points to some
attractive takeover targets hidden
among the Zombies, “Clever
investors are seeing an opportunity
to pick up a bargain. Some of these
companies, stuck in a zombie state
because of their balance sheet, have
lots of potential for new owners
to turn it around. We picked 82
companies that we feel have the
most potential.”
And for those unable to attract
new buyers Pattison says, “Most
have simply had their day and a
combination of aging assets, rising
losses and increasing debts mean
they are unlikely to attract a suitor
before the receivers are called.”

Small companies continue to struggle

101 small companies in the UK
Fencing industry are in financial
difficulty as the lingering effects
of the credit crunch continue to
bite hardest at the lower end of the
market.
According to Plimsoll and their new
report on conditions in the Fencing
industry, smaller companies have
not had the same facilities to ride
out the recession as well as their
larger counterparts.
David Pattison, author of the
Plimsoll Analysis Fencing explains,
“While large companies have relied
on their size, brands and better
access to cash, smaller companies
have been left high and dry.”
He continues, “We have given 101
small companies a Danger rating.
While conditions have improved of
late, I fear a high proportion will fail.
Whereas large companies can call
on banks and parent companies or
cut out loss making parts of their
operations, smaller companies are
increasingly running out of cash.”
Pattison also points out how
small companies are struggling to
maintain their market share, “272
small companies are selling less
than last year. Clearly they have
seen demand for their products
dip or worse still, a new competitor
has emerged. With their finances
already stretched, they have little
left in their arsenal to fight back.”
So what next for these small
companies? Pattison says,
“There are clearly too many small
companies chasing too little market.
The inevitable consequence is
another round of consolidation
with large competitors buying small
companies at a discount. Of the
611 companies with assets of less
than £3million, we have identified
285 companies as being vulnerable
to takeover.”

We are all fully aware that the last
few years have been tough for the
industry but Metropolitan Fencing
have managed to face these difficult
times head on and are now swiftly
becoming one of the leading fencing

Founder and Managing Director

Broadhurst has been at the forefront

Earnshaws Celebrate 150 Years

with a Party in the Woods
One of Yorkshires longest businesses
celebrates its 150th Anniversary this
year: Job Earnshaw and Bros, better
known for its Earnshaws Fencing
Centres brand has been trading
continuously under family ownership
since 1860.

If you went down to the woods near

Midgley on Saturday 5th June you
were sure of a big surprise. The
usually peaceful Earnshaws Fencing
Centre in Midgley was disturbed by
snarling chain saws and the might of
the Skelmanthorpe Brass band. Not
to mention the groans of spectators in
the Shed building competition and the
gasps of wonder at the tree sculpting
contest. In fact the only sanctuary
was the specially set up museum tent
which housed exhibits and displays
charting the history of this unique
family company. The museum is open
six days a week until end of August.

claim family ownership for that period
of time and fewer still remain true
to the business roots of the founder.
Earnshaws, however have done just
that and the celebration on 5th June
at Earnshaws Fencing Centre, was
their way of saying thank you to loyal

All in all it was great way to celebrate
a business that for the most part uses
natural and sustainable resources and
is a great resource for the gardeners of

What’s in a name? Well in Watsons
case at Lotherton, near Leeds, quite
a lot actually. You see they used
to be called Watson Engineering
up until April of this year but now
they are Watson Fencing – or to
be absolutely accurate Watson
Fencing Manufacturers Ltd. Their
new name also sees each of their
team with a logo proudly displaying
just one word – Watsons.
It might not seem a lot, but it
makes a huge difference to the way
in which they are viewed in the
fencing world so far as those who
run the business are concerned.
James and Ian Watson started
Watson Engineering 6 years ago,
but during the past six years they
have found that the ‘engineering’
tag was holding them back a little.
‘99% of our work is fencing,’ says
Johnny Scott, who is Ian and
James’ brother-in-law and runs the
sales side of the business.
Since their formation the company
has grown from a two person
business to now running a team of
eleven.
‘When it was first set up it was
probably more like 50/50 between
engineering and fencing, but with
more and more of the team having
fencing knowledge it’s probably
no surprise it has gone the way it
has.’
Their main aim behind the name
change is to capitalise on what is
already coming their way as James
explains:
‘We were getting more people ask
us whether we could supply them,
fencing contractors particularly, but
with a name that included the word
engineering there was always a
slight doubt in some people’s minds
over whether we really were fencing
manufacturers.’
‘We wanted to branch out to those
who didn’t know us. Changing our
name puts us up to more potential
customers and in the short time
since we changed our name we
have already increased on enquiries
from the end users, particularly
fencing contractors, coming to us
as a one stop shop.’
‘ We are careful though that we
look after those companies who
have been loyal to us, so we will
always ask who a contractor has
bought through previously. If they
have bought through someone we
already supplied we have made
sure that continues. If they hadn’t
used us before through another
company then we look to supply
them directly.’
‘Our bread and butter business is
security fencing, all industrial, with
at present over 50% of it coming
from the sports side. We put up
fencing for sports areas, ball courts,
multi-use facilities and a lot of care
centres.’
‘The only fencing we don’t do is
palisade or electric. We do make
palisade gates and we do every
kind of mesh system. We bring in
the mesh systems then add our own
manufactured posts and gates.’
Only 25% of their manufacturing
work stays in Yorkshire, with very
little going in the county other
than through one main contractor.

Permeable Paving
In 2008, the Government introduced
front garden legislation that requires
planning permission to lay traditional

paving, or have sufficient drainage
or soak away to ensure runoff from
non-permeable surfaces does not go
onto roads.
Permeable paving is certainly the
best option environmentally, and
the easiest choice when it comes
to the new legislation. However not
everyone has the right soil conditions
for permeable paving and for it to
work well, it really does need to be
installed by a trained professional.

‘widespread interest’ in the official
launch event for Timber Expo on
Wednesday 29 September 2010,
at the show venue, Coventry’s
Ricoh Arena. Timber Expo is the

When you park your machinery and
brand new trailer in a secure yard,
you expect it to be there the following
morning. The vehicle is locked but
nevertheless well organised thieves
gained access, through a gap in the
back hedgerow. Both items were
surreptitiously removed.
Whilst at a Farm Watch Meeting some
three nights later, the three attending
Police Officers were surprised to learn
that the local constabulary had only
provided a crime reference number.
It subsequently turns out that on the
same night as the meeting another
new tractor and twenty thousand
gallon tanker were whisked away
without trace. On Sunday of the
same week, at almost midnight, an
International Tractor and sprayer were
followed at midnight and successfully
apprehended by a neighbouring farmer
in the centre of a busy town.
Specialist agricultural insurance
broker Harold Woolgar said
“Machinery thefts have now reached
epidemic proportions. There has to be
a system devised whereby the Police

have a financial interest in finding the
perpetrators of these thefts, be it by
reward or bounty, or call it whatever
you will.”
At the Lincolnshire Show last
month, Harold spoke with the
Lincolnshire High Sheriff who is
arranging a meeting between the
Chief Constables of the Counties of
Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and
South Yorkshire with a view to finding
a way of rewarding the Police Force,
when the thieves and the machinery
are successfully recovered.
A Caterpillar tracked vehicle was
stolen recently late one Friday evening.
The owner only realised his loss at the
Sunday lunchtime. Making contact
with the local dealership, they very
kindly opened their offices to search
the computer system, and via the
machine’s own engine management
system, the vehicle was traced to a
lay-by on the German/Polish border.
There followed then a telephone call
to the German Police, three men and
a low loader were arrested and in due
course the Caterpillar found it’s way

Police received a “10% of the vehicle
value” reward from insurers.
Having just reviewed our own
brokerage claims statistics, we have
found that whilst fire claims which
are normally considered to be the
most risk in yards, the total fire claims
came to £146,000. Whereas the
theft claims came to £650,000 in the
same twelve month period.
If within the software installed on iPads
allows the computer to act as a homing
beacon, this which allows the Police
to track the criminals movements via
GPS until they are caught. Is there not
a serious reason why similar devices
could not be installed in tractors and
loading shovels at the manufacturers?
Specialist agricultural contractor
Andrew Nicholson said “my
replacement Fendt tractor will
definitely be fitted with the blue key
integrated electronic ignition system
which rather like Mercedes motor
cars, will not allow the vehicle to be
used without the correct computerised
key in place”.
Container traffic crossing the world on
ships is tracked through computers
using GPS, where the records are
updated every 15 minutes and gives a
realistic location at each report. Experts
believe that “real time services” such at
Apple’s “find me” technology will soon
become standard.
Harold Woolgar concluded by saying “it
seems strange that we buy cars valued
at £40,000 which have a tracker
fitted, but at the same time spend
£75,000 plus on machinery and still
feel we can leave them unprotected. A
spokesperson for Agco stated that blue
key technology is integrated within the
more expensive tractor ranges but is
currently only available on the Fendt”.
Harold Woolgar suggested that if
installed at the factory, the cost of
such technology might be in the order
of circa £200 per vehicle.

Fast growing fencing company

Chris Berry talks with Paul Griffiths of Norex Fencing
Anyone who says that the recession
is all bad news obviously hasn’t
talked with Paul Griffiths and Syd
Evans of Norex Fencing, based
in Garforth just east of Leeds. In
just two years their new Yorkshire
fencing company has gone from
nothing to a medium-sized operation
with a team of 8 employees handling
work for schools and the Ministry of
Defence.

‘We’re on to our sixth ‘Build Schools

for the Future’ site and we have two
projects starting very soon which
are new schools,’ says Paul. ‘We
do everything but domestic fencing.

So just how has Norex Fencing made

such an impact in so short a time? The
answer is straight forward enough.
Paul and Syd have many years of
experience in the fencing industry,
Paul having originally started on the
fabrications side and Syd having
fenced all his working life. They had
worked together previously and they
wanted to run their own show.
‘What’s really good about what
we do now is that we have no-one
looking over us. We are owned by HC
Engineering, so we are part of their
group, but they are quite happy to
let us get on with our own business.
We bring in the work, carry out the
work, and they pay the bills. We have

grown very quickly from being a small
company to a medium sized business
and that’s down to us providing the
right expertise and doing things
right. We picked up a lot of work at
the start and we’ve added to that as
we’ve grown.’
Two of the companies Norex
undertake a lot of work for are
Vinci Construction and Carillion
Enterprise.
‘They are both very successful
companies in their own right and we
are delighted to be working for them.
They undertake work throughout the
world and we are looking forward to
working with them for a long time to
come.’
Their main suppliers include Heras
Fencing and Barkers Fencing. Whilst
80 per cent of their work is presently
involved with schools and MoD sites
Paul is keen to expand further.
‘Since we started we have worked
as far afield as Stafford, Nottingham,
Clitheroe and the east coast, but
really wherever the work is we will go.
We are not restricted in any way and
we have done quite a bit of work on
industrial units too.’

Kit wise Norex isn’t heavy on plant.

They have their own vehicles,
generators and smaller machines but
will hire in any larger pieces of kit they
need.

Systems” to give it its full title. The

to be used by manufacturers or
vendors to determine the wind

Traditionally a skill passed on from one
generation to another, there is now a
growing demand for skilled craftsmen
to build, repair and maintain dry
stone walls across the country. As
this demand continues to grow, and
in a bid to address the emerging skill
shortage in this specialist sector,
Lantra Awards has developed a new
suite of qualifications in dry stone
walling that are open to volunteers,
craftspeople of all levels or anyone
interested in taking it up as a hobby.
Dry stone walls date back at least
three and a half millennia, and are
one of the most commonly used
boundaries in Britain. They help
to create the traditional pattern of
fields and country lanes that are
synonymous with the landscape
of rural areas. Stretching from
Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands,
conservative estimates suggest that
there is still more than 125,000
miles of dry stone walling in existence

Dry stone walling
is a skilled and
traditional craft
but one that is vital
to the landscape of
rural Britain
today, with perhaps the most notable
example being Hadrian’s Wall in the
North East.
Often considered an expensive option
when compared to other forms of
fencing, there are many advantages
of using dry stone walling as boundary
structures. Walls without mortar rely
solely on the skill of the craftsmen
who build them and the forces of
gravity and frictional resistance.
They can be built without the need
for expensive, heavy equipment and
masons require only a minimum
number of tools to erect structures
that are both exceptionally durable
and relatively easy to repair. Another
advantage is the natural drainage of
dry stone which helps prevent frozen
rain and snow forcing joints apart and
causing damage.
Recently, there has been renewed
interest in the environmental
advantages of dry stone walls and
it is a technique that is increasingly
being used in prestigious garden,
landscape and artistic projects
across the country. Dry stone walls
are highly sustainable, built from
natural materials which can easily
be reused and recycled if parts of
the structure are damaged or need
repairing. Designed to complement
and enhance landscapes, dry stone
walls also offer an invaluable shelter
and habitat for a wide variety of
birds, animals and plants.
Developed under the new
Qualifications and Credit Framework
(QCF), our dry stone walling
qualifications have the full support
of Lantra Sector Skills Council, and
are in partnership with the Dry Stone
Walling Association of Great Britain
(DSWA).
The Level 1 Certificate in Dry Stone
Walling is aimed at learners starting
out in the profession and helps to
teach the basics including building
and repair work, as well as the use
of copestones. Level 2 helps the
learner to develop these skills further
and encompasses new techniques
such as building a cheek end
section. Those wishing to complete
the Level 3 Certificate will have to
undergo more advanced training in
the building of dry stone walls.

Magnetic gate latches offer the

world’s safest technology
Magnetically triggered gate latches
have revolutionised the safety
and reliability of residential and
commercial gates, but most notably
on child safety gates.
When Australian gate-hardware
design company D&D Technologies
first introduced its MagnaLatch®

A MATCH MADE IN MARITAL HEAVEN
Sharon and Gary Hodson
As the saying goes, behind every
great man, there’s a great women;
which couldn’t be more apt where G
and H Fencing is concerned.
Gary and Sharon Hodson founded
the company over 20 years ago,
after Gary decided that his work as a
self-employed contractor had grown
to be too much to handle; “It grew
and grew naturally really. I’d worked
for five years after leaving school and
it came to a point where I knew I
needed to take a chance and go for it.”
The decision to establish their very
own company came soon after the
couple were married; “We just got
on with it,” Sharon explains, “it was
difficult at first because we had such
a young family. I remember when we
first started we scrimped and scraped
to get the materials for a job that
was worth £2000. But once we’d
manage to get the funds together and
complete the job well, the work came
flooding in.”
As well as their own commitment
to each other, Sharon and Gary
admit that the relationship they have
with their fully qualified and CSS
accredited staff is second to none,
Gary explains: “We have always had
a great working relationship with our
team. We have a gentleman called
Steven Williams that has been with us
for 15 years and plays a vital part in
everything we do. In total we employ
six staff members which equals to
three gangs at any one time.”
Back to the job in hand and G and
H Fencing deal primarily within the
trade of steel fencing, specifically
with palisade, chain link, galvanised
railings and welded mesh products.
Towards the end of last year the
company secured a huge deal with
Birmingham City Council to fence
the city’s central Bleak Hill Park with
supplies manufactured by IAE. And
in 2008 they were given prestigious
contracts from the housing trust to
work in both Bolton and Warrington.
Gary and Sharon were also successful
in securing a maintenance contract
with two of the nations leading
building suppliers. Meaning that G
and H Fencing is a first port of call if
any branch of the suppliers is in need
of fencing work, repairs or general
day-to-day upkeep.
At a time when the fencing industry
continues to struggle with timber
prices and shortages, Gary admits
that running a fencing firm can have
its difficulties: “I suppose the biggest
negative in the industry is the constant
updates in red tape regulations. I
think its time to weather the storm so
to speak. We’ll see how the industry
shapes up in the coming months.”
With over 20 years in the business,

Cash incentives to
boost North West
England’s woodland
The Forestry Commission is offering grants to landowners as part of a
drive to boost the amount of woodland in the North West of England.
The Forestry Commission, which is
responsible for protecting, expanding
and promoting the sustainable
management of woods and forests, is
looking to offer around £3 million in
grants to help increase the woodland
cover, and its management, in the
North West- one of the UK’s least
wooded regions.
North West England has woodland
cover of around 6.8 per cent, which
is some way behind the national
average of 8.4 per cent. This works
out at around 14 hectares or the
equivalent of just under 14 football
pitches of woodland for every

thousand people in the North West.
The national average is 22 hectares
per thousand people.
The Forestry Commission in the
North West of England is looking to
redress this balance by offering cash
incentives to encourage landowners
to allocate land for tree planting.
Landowners can receive £1,800
per hectare as a standard grant for
new native woodland creation. More
money is also available if the land
is within target areas to support
priority actions within the North
West. For example areas deemed
important for the protection of
woodland birds or butterflies or
where woodlands contribute to soil
and water protection. Land in these
areas could attract a further £1,000
per hectare in grant funding.
Kevin May, Grants, Regulation and
Partnership Manager for the Forestry
Commission in North West England,
said: “We are determined to increase
the proportion of woodland that
exists in the North West. Woodlands
are important for a number of
reasons. They provide habitat for
numerous species of wildlife; they
contribute to peoples well being by
improving the appearance of places
as well as providing opportunities for
recreation. Trees also absorb carbon
and help to reduce our contribution
to climate change.”
Last year 280 hectares of new
woodland was created through
Forestry Commission grants. The
closing date for applications for
Woodland Improvement Grants is
September 30th this year.

DREAM MACHINE
Last month, Willie Baumber of W.
Baumber Fencing set the standards
in what contractors up and down
the country could achieve with their
machines.

After being approached by a

longstanding customer of his, Willie
was asked to erect a large amount
of poultry netting which would stand
over 6ft tall across acres of farm land
in Lincolnshire. Sensing the need to
pull out all the stops Willie contacted
his nearest and dearest suppliers for
help. Although Willie was already the
proud owner of a JCB Fastrac and a
Bryce Post Driver, he was without a
Quick Fencer and was fearful that he
couldn’t attain the required results
without one.
He tells us: “I was in need of a
machine with the capabilities to reach
new heights, literally. Paddy Thyne of
KFS Fencing kindly offered to loan me
his Quick Fencer deer fencer model
to complete the work. So I attached
that on the front of the Fastrac and the
Post Driver on the back.”
Willie used specially designed wire
supplied by Wayne at Tornado Wire
for the project and made use of
pressure creosoted posts supplied
by Calders and Grandidge of Boston.
Now the work has been completed
Willie is both delighted and slightly
overwhelmed with the result.
“It looks fantastic; I’m incredibly
pleased with the standard and the
scale of the work! It just goes to show
that when contractors and suppliers
work together, we can achieve great
things.”

Bobcat, a member of the newly
formed global Doosan Infracore
Construction Equipment Group,
has introduced a new improved
operator cab for the company’s
range of telescopic handlers.
The new cab offers several significant
changes aimed at improving and
modernizing the operator’s working
environment, including an improved
dashboard, a fully integrated air
conditioning system and a sturdier
steering wheel for easier handling
and control.
The dashboard has been redesigned
to ensure the operator can quickly gain
an overview of the working conditions
and operating configurations. All

data is conveniently placed in front
of the operator and is easy to read.
This includes all operational mode
indicators which are shown in the
top part of the display. The control
switches on the display have been
enhanced to improve visibility
and ease of use. Backlit switches
illuminate each function and the

are active.
The visibility of attachments has
been increased by lowering the
display and dashboard, improving
the line of sight between the operator
and the attachment.
The air conditioning unit is fully
integrated into the dashboard. It
features well placed air outlets
throughout the cab, providing an
increased total airflow of over
40% to 500 m3 per hour. The
number of directional air vents
has been increased, ensuring an
even distribution of air around the
operator. The improved circulation
of air ensures a more homogeneous
temperature throughout the cab.
A new sun visor offers excellent
protection for the operator. The
continuous pull-down system
provides the operator a variable
and wider range of protection,
giving better visibility of the work
environment and instrumentation,
even in full sunlight conditions. The
exterior lights have been upgraded
to provide a more focused beam of
light for improved visibility of the
working environment.

NEW BRANCH MANAGER
Earlier this year McVeigh Parker
made their presence known up
North, after their new depot in
Wigan was opened to the public.
In order to make the branch a
success, McVeigh needed an
individual with experience and
knowhow at its reigns. Branch
Manager Craig Tomkins was
recently appointed to achieve just
that, and he’s never looked back.
Having already worked at the
Worcester branch of McVeigh,
Craig was well aware of how the
company worked and in his own
words “naturally progressed” into
the managerial role offered to him.
Craig told us, “Everything’s going
great so far, it’s been a refreshing

Members of the British Association
of Landscape Industries (BALI)
were celebrating last months after
raising more than £10,000 in the
2010 Three Peaks Challenge.
Fourteen BALI representatives
participated in the Challenge in aid
of Greenfingers, which is dedicated
to creating magical gardens for
children’s hospices across the UK.
BALI’s Chairman, Richard Gardener
said: “We finished the Challenge in
23 hours and 48 minutes, which we
are delighted about. It was incredibly
challenging and took a lot of mental
and physical preparation. There
is normally a six-to-one dropout
rate during the Challenge so it’s a
great achievement that all 14 of us
finished the course.”
The Three Peaks Challenge involves
climbing the three highest peaks in
Wales, England and Scotland within
24 hours. These are Snowdon in
Wales, which is 1,085 metres high,
Scafell Pike in England, 978 metres
high and Ben Nevis in Scotland,
1,344 metres high.
Deborah Skillicorn, Chief Executive of
Greenfingers, said: “I’m thrilled and
extremely grateful they have managed
to raise such a lot of money through
their sponsorship and we plan on
inviting them to one of the hospices’
gardens to see how the money is
going to make a real difference.”

Air Ambulance qualifies for
A team of nine determined BSW
Timber employees from Carlisle
have raised £2180 for the Great
North Air Ambulance by cycling
147 miles, coast to coast, from
Whitehaven to Tynemouth.
The trailblazers were helped along
the twelve hour route by a dedicated
support team of friends and family,
who fuelled the coast-to-coast
adventure with nutritious snacks,
drinks and much-needed luggage
transportation.
Alistair Sommerville, mill manager at
BSW Timber in Carlisle, said: “This
is an incredible achievement for all
involved, raising vital funds for the
Great North Air Ambulance, which
relies solely on public funding to
continue its invaluable work.”
The BSW Timber employees who took
part in the charity challenge were:
John Atkinson, Tony Messner, Nigel
Patrickson, Andy Conley, Barry Elliot,
Adrian Smith, Stephen Lancaster,
Richard Vose and Gary Nelson, with

The famous Coast to Coast cross-

in 1994, running from Whitehaven
