Form for changing the description of a course

1. Name of Department and campus proposing the change: Civil Engineering, Hyderabad, Pilani, and
Dubai

2. Details of the course for which change in description (s) is (are) being sought:

S.NO. Course No. Name of Course L P U

CE F211 Mechanics of Solids 3 0 3

3. Existing course description(write topics only):

Introduction to mechanics of rigid bodies and deformable bodies; Thermal stresses; Equilibrium of forces;
Bending moment and shear force diagrams for determinate beams and frames; Analysis of statically
determinate trusses; Flexural and shear Stresses in beams; Stresses and strains on inclined planes; Torsion in
shafts; Combined bending and torsion stresses in shafts; Slope and deflection in beams due to bending using
double Integration, moment area method and Conjugate beam method; Energy principles and their application
in structural analysis; Hoop stresses in thin cylindrical shells; Suspension cables; Failure theories.
4. Proposed course description:
Introduction to mechanics of rigid bodies and deformable bodies; Thermal stresses; Equilibrium of forces;
Bending moment and shear force diagrams for determinate beams and frames; Analysis of statically
determinate trusses; Flexural and shear Stresses in beams; Combined stresses; Stresses and strains on inclined
planes; Introduction to torsion; Torsion in shafts; Slope and deflection in beams due to bending; Introduction to
Energy Methods; Stresses in thin cylindrical shells; Suspension cables; Failure theories, Buckling of columns
using Eulers Theory.
5. Justification for the change in course description:
Curriculum review experts and CCDCA observed that the existing course content is too large to be effectively
taught over 41-42 lectures, with adequate importance to the critical topics. For deflection calculations, not
going to list the methods as some of them are obsolete and can be left to the instructor. Buckling theories need
to be added.

6. Have the proposed changes been discussed in Departmental committee on academics (DCA ) and the
cross campus Departmental Committee on Academics (CCDCA)?
Yes. And Yes. Consensus reached.
