Fiji Hub Achievement Report

November 2016
Objective: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and
sanitation management (Sustainable Development Goal 6)

A statistic from the United Nations, promotes that water scarcity

affects more than 40 per cent of the global population and is
projected to rise, as we start to see effects of climate change
from rising sea levels to more intense cyclones, Fiji stands
vulnerable to unpredictable and extreme weather events. Since
May this year the GVI Community Expedition team have created
the potential to secure over 60, 000 litres of safe, and clean
drinking water to the Island of Moturiki, with the provision of Rain
Water Harvesting Tanks (RWH). In line with the Sustainable
Development Goals, to achieve safe and affordable drinking
water, sanitation and hygiene for all, GVI have developed and
presented workshops on hygiene promotion, first aid and RWH
maintenance and education in forms of lesson plans to two
schools in Moturiki on the essential topics of WASH.

The recent move for the Community Expedition team from Dawasamu to join forces with the
Marine Research Base, has kept the volunteers and staff very busy.
The aim: to open up a Community Expedition Program on Caqalai, working closely with the
communities on Moturiki, with a main priority in securing the Island with the sustainable Rain
Water Harvesting Systems.
The GVI team carried out need-assessments through data collection, resource assessments, and
knowledge sharing and data analysis, thus forming a well-designed construction project with
management, monitoring and evaluation plans.
After the wake of Cyclone Winston RWH tanks many tanks were moved throughout the villages
with the 330km winds, both schools were left with no hand washing facilities, and many of the
community members did not have soap high on their priority list. The community expedition team
decided to focus on three outcomes: RWH repairs and maintenance, Educational and interactive
workshops to all villages, and Teaching to students in both schools on Moturiki.

Rain Water Harvesting Repairs and Maintenance

Aims: assist communities to be aline with the World

Health Organisation standard to have access to 5L
of safe drinking water available to everyone every
day.
- Work with communities to Repair and install RWH
tanks to schools and communities to increase the
overall capacity of RWH for communities on Moturiki
- Improve hygiene facilities in schools, through the
construction of eco friendly tippy taps
Education Workshops

Aims: to educate all communities and school teachers on safe hygiene and sanitation practices
through fun and interactive workshops.

- The Community Expedition Team has delivered workshops on

three essential topics: First Aid (as a first response to Cyclone
Winston, Hand Washing workshop, and RWH maintenance.

Teaching in schools

Hand washing at essential

times, before eating,
cooking or after going to the
toilet can reduce the rates
of diarrhea by 40 percent
(UNICEF).

Aim: to teach students the importance of good hygiene and sanitation, through education in
schools. Furthermore educate children on the importance of communicable disease and the
impacts of drought due to poor water security.
- Every week the Community team would prepare a lesson plan on WASH topics and
present to numerous classes over 20 weeks, teaching in classes 1 to 6.
- GVI Community team helped the children celebrate World Toilet Day on the 19th of
November, playing games focused around sanitation, like pin the poo on the toilet and poo
relay.
