Apollo 13
Directed by:
Ron Howard
Story by:
Jim Lovell & Jeffrey Kluger
1) Introduction
Apollo 13 is a 1995 American drama space adventure film directed by Ron Howard that is
based on the events of the Apollo 13 lunar mission. It is the story of NASAs 1970 moon
landing-turned-rescue mission when an on-board explosion threatened the safety of its
astronauts, Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (Bill
Paxton). Ron Howard pays a tribute to the power of human ingenuity to overcome seemingly
insurmountable obstacles in this 140-minute adventure. Not only that, it also has a great deal to
say about the power of the human spirit.

2) Plot Summary
Apollo 13 is a true story based the events that occurred during the third lunar-landing mission.
This film shows the trials and tribulations of the Apollo 13 crew, mission control, and families
after a near-fatal accident cripples the space vehicle. Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack
Swigert find everything going according to plan after leaving Earth's orbit. However, a slight
fault from inside the space module caused an explosion that turned the exploration into a test for
survival for the crew of Apollo 13. While Lovell, Haise, and Swigert try to survive in space,
workers at NASA must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 to Earth.

3) Description
During the 140-minute running time, we are essentially given three stories i.e.
1. The astronauts' struggle to stay alive,
2. The controlled chaos at NASA as experts are forced to come up with unexpected
solutions.
3. And the trauma faced by the families of the men whose lives are in danger.
Scientifically, Apollo 13 is accurate, even though at times things seem more like science fiction.
Additionally, this movie takes fewer liberties with the facts than many other movies that are
based on true events. And the only true villain in this film is the vastness of space, an enemy that
refuses direct confrontation. The efficient screenplay is full of the dry humor of people in crisis.
There is a strong, ironic subtheme about the uncertainty of the media and the public as the
Apollo 13 flight was already "old news", the United States had already beaten the Russians to the
moon, and Armstrong had already made his "one small step for man". So, the networks didn't
even carry the broadcast of the Apollo 13 guys cavorting in space. But when disaster strikes,
Lovell's wife finds TV "experts" on every channel gorily detailing everything that could go
wrong, and media reporters like vultures starts setting up on her front lawn in anticipation of
tragedy. While on the other hand, two thousand miles above in the wilderness of space, the fate
of the three astronauts rests with the computer nerds of Mission Control, who promptly try to
suggests solutions that use everything from duct tape to the ship's momentum.
4) Analysis
Apollo 13 is a powerful story, told with great clarity and remarkable technical detail, and acted
without pumped-up theatrics. It's about men trained to do a job, and doing a better one than
anyone could have imagined. The science behind "Apollo 13" is detailed and specific, and the
film conveys it with superb simplicity. Also in terms of realism, nothing else here comes close to
the astounding fact that some of the film's zero-gravity scenes were shot aboard a KC-135 NASA
plane on a steep parabolic orbit that earned it the nickname "vomit comet". The performances of
actors were equally staunch, giving vivid and likable impressions of characters whose rough
edges have been only slightly smoothed.
All above said, sure, there are thrills and spills, the adrenaline rush of the well-mounted Saturn
launch, the race to fabricate a new filter from spare parts. However, the film is low on dramatic
scenes and for a space movie, both the special effects and photography are surprisingly tedious.

5) Conclusion
"Apollo 13" is an impressive movie overall, from the acting to the visual effects, which still
stand the test of time. It has great acting, skillful direction, and a plenty of tasteful humor. It's
about men trained to do a job, and doing a better one than anyone could have imagined. In my
opinion, the music is what really drives the film forward, it threatens to be overly dramatic but
instead turns out to be one of the most daring and powerful soundtracks to date. If you like your
disaster films loud and full of explosive stuff, then this is probably not for you, but if you like
them realistic with a slight touch of drama then watch it and you will not be disappointed.
