Faculty Development Plan

Teacher Education

This, then is the basic meaning of the 'learning organization'an organization that is continually expanding its capacity
to create its future. For such an organization, it is not enough merely to survive. 'Survival learning' or what is more
often termed 'adaptive learning' is importantindeed it is necessary. But for a learning organization, 'adaptive learning'
must be joined by 'generative learning,' learning that enhances our capacity to create. (Peter Senge, The Fifth
Discipline, p. 14)

A . Teaching

Status 6.7 student evaluation of instructor

Strengths a love and passion to teach through service, an abundance of


energy, an interest in professional networking.

Weakness a lack of a strong research base, stronger understanding of the


principles of the gospel, so as to enhance teaching and
learning, "new" person at BYUlearning the connections, a
need to increase my understanding of how technology might
further enhance teaching and learning.

Short-term to be more diligent in the study of the scriptures as they relate


goals to my stewardshipcontinue with weekly scripture study
sessions;
to increase an understanding of how the technologies can
enhance teaching and learningcontinue to study the
literature, learn from experts in the field, study conditions in
the school, write and publish;
to enhance teaching and learning in my classes through
increasing writing excellencework with XXX in fall 1998
and winter 1999 to team teach writing;
to apply authentic evaluation procedures in my classes
continue with the study of authentic procedures, introduce,
experiment, write and publish about its application to the
college classroom;
to study the concept of cohort learning in the college
classroomcontinue with the study by experimenting, writing
and publishing.

Long-term to become a leader in the field of K-12 curriculum


goals development through the use of electronic application for
enhancing instructional leadership in my classesintroduce
into my syllabi concepts of teaching and learning for diverse
classroom, electronic applications, motivating students;
to research, write and publish effective teaching and learning
procedures for the college classroomto compile research
from my classes

time to review teaching and learning materials/resources
offered by the Faculty Development Center

B. Scholarship

Status no publications in 1997/hired August 1997

Strengths a desire to research, learn, and write in relation to my strong


pragmatic base, the ability to experiment with ideas and to put
these ideas (people and concepts) together;

Weakness lack of a proven research base (according to the specifications


of refereed journals), lack of the necessary professional
organizational networks, lack of representation on
professional executives;

Short-term continue my research endeavors --working with graduate


goals students, school-based educators, department faculty, David
O. McKay School of Education faculty, and faculty from
other schools of education (see Appendix A of current
research projects);
keep focused in my disciplinecenter research, work with
students, conferences, and presentations;
be open to serving on faculty/school committees and
investigating new projects;
become more familiar with journals/their editors in my field
and related fieldsget access to profession serve lists, read
widely, volunteer as a reviewer.

Long-term to become a leader in the field of K-12 curriculum


goals development through the use of electronic application
develop a web site networking with local, national, and
international educators for a global classroom;
to acquire financial resources to enhance the global
classroomequipment for BYU and the schools, support
technical staff, travel to schools;
publish 2 articles in scholarly peer-reviewed journals before
May 1999;
prior to the three year review, publish another 3 articles;
publish a monthly newsletter for Utah Educators' Association.

Requirements regular meetings with the Department Chair;


release time from teaching duties in the developmental phase
of the K-12 curriculum project;
office space and secretarial support for graduate
assistants/technicians involved in the K-12 global classroom.

C. Citizenship

Status chair of the 2002 SLCOC/SEV Education Committee,


member of the Department Masters Committee, member of
the Department NASDTEC Committee, chair of the
Department Curriculum Committee; co-chair CITES Gifted
and Talented Committee;

Strengths willingness to serve, the interest and the energy to serve on a


wide variety of committees, organizational abilities, public
relations/networking skills;

Weakness learning the culture and the people within Utah and BYU;

Short-term to continue with my present committee workbe cognizant of


goals opportunities for my Department;
to build networking opportunities between the Department,
schools, and the community.

Long-term to assist the Department in its efforts to evaluate and establish


goals its perspectiverelation to the School of Education, its
students, courses offered, recruitment of new faculty;
through work with the SLCOC/SEV Education Committee
enhance opportunities for the Department, School of
Education, CITES.

Requirements regular meetings with the Department Chair;


release time from teaching duties in the developmental phase
of the K-12 curriculum project.
