CONFERENCE THEME
The central theme of the conference is exploration of the rapidly proliferating and resource intensive
urbanization affecting gender equity in cities of the Asia-Pacific. The conference aims to promote research involving
the rigorous treatment of gender issues as an interdisciplinary site within the field of urban ecology. It is hoped that
the conference will contribute to the vital theoretical and practical debates on urbanism and gender equity in the 21st
century Asia-Pacific region.

There have been many varied approaches to studies on urbanization and gender in the third world such as the
feminist, the anti-racist, and the post-colonial approaches. While some scholars continue to use the metaphor of
metabolism to describe how city natures are organized in relation to dominant socio-economic functioning of cities;
others now emphasise the need for hybridized and relational approaches and attention to subjectivity and
environmental imaginaries. Traditional studies had focused on struggles over resources and environmental harm, but
recently, new research agendas have emerged which focus on how visceral experiences connect with structural and
discursive spheres. Multiple interconnected relations of power shape gender (in)equity in urban ecologies and need to
be focused upon in the conference. Thus, the role of unequal power relations, especially gender relations, in
constituting the urban space is our central theme.
The conference will focus on issues of marginalization within our cities especially those linked to gender.
Papers may focus on (but need not be limited to) the following sub-themes:
Gendered dispossessions and issues due to impact of urban policy and governance
Socio-spatial and ethnic segregation in urban spaces with gendered ramifications. Dynamics of the
intersectionalities of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion and caste in urban spaces which further
aggravate inequity
Economic issues of urban work spaces, labour evaluation, wage gaps and uneven resource distributions with
gendered ramifications
Issues linked to migrant populations within urban spaces
Issues of health and nutrition , including reproductive health and rights, linked to gender inequity in cities
Identity based marginalizations, including those of LGBT groups, which increase vulnerability to sexual and
other violence
Knowledge gaps, capacity building and learning in urban spaces with gendered ramifications

Papers with an inter-disciplinary perspective from across the Social Sciences and also the Humanities on the
above themes are invited. Case studies presenting in-depth ethnographical or historical perspectives are also invited.
