ABSTRACT

This study compares European standards and specifications on

high-nickel alloys. Special attention has been paid to the data and
guidelines presented for composition, heat treatment, physical
properties, short-time mechanical properties at room and elevated
temperature, and long-term creep properties at elevated temperatures.

Only the standards and specifications provided by the

participating organizations and one international and one European
standard were compared.

It is concluded that the values presented for a given composition

are in fairly good agreement.

FOREWORD AMD EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The present report is the revised final report of CEC Study Contract RA1-
0177-B performed under Working Group Codes and Standards (WGCS) Activity
Group 3: "Materials". As for all other study contracts in this area,
Activity Group 3 (AG3) monitored the progress of the work and discussed
the draft final report. Furthermore, the final report was reviewed by
several members of the AG3 before its publication as an EUR report.

The aim of the present work is to pave the way to the harmonization of
standards and specifications applicable in the participating European
countries with respect to the heat-resisting high-nickel alloys used as
structural components for bolts, springs and tubes in nuclear reactor
technology.

The materials finally selected by the participating organizations are

equivalent to the following comemrcial designations:

Alloy 800, Inconel 600, Inconel 718, Nimonic 80A, Hastelloy C276.
For each alloy type, relevant national, European and international
standards and/or specifications have been compared.

In none of the groups is the specific data presented in a homogeneous

manner in the standards of various origins. They are given variously as
minimum values, maximum values, a range of values and as measured or
estimated values.
Most of the standards refer to other standards drawn up by their issuing
organizations specifying applicable test methods for property
determinations. This is also the case in the International, European and
Belgian standards for tolerance requirements.
Generally speaking, the limits and testing methods used are comparable.
The SI system of units is fairly well respected and slight derogations do
not hamper comparison.
A tentative suggestion regarding the harmonization of existing standards
would be to use the structure of either the European or the International
standard as a basis, and to expand the content of the selected standard to
include more detailed mechanical and tensile property specifications of
the type given in the German specifications.

Comparison of Material Property Specifications for High-Nickel Alloys.

Work performed under CEC Study Contract No. RA1-0177-B

INTRODUCTION

This work was carried out under a study contract awarded to

BELGONUCLEAIRE by the CEC. It was performed in conjunction with the
following European Organizations : INTERATOM, Germany; AEA
Technology, United Kingdom and NOVATOME, France.

The present study is one of a series of evaluations made within the

framework of the activities of WG3 with a view to harmonizing
material standards and specifications applicable in the European
Community. It pertains to high-nickel alloys.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the present work is to pave the way to the harmonization
of standards and specifications applicable in the participating
European countries with respect to the heat-resisting high-nickel
alloys used as structural components for bolts, springs and tubes in
nuclear reactor technology.

The materials finally selected by the participating organizations

are equivalent to the following commercial designations :

Alloy 800, Inconel 600, Inconel 718, Nimonic 80A.

The French participant has also provided data on high-molybdenum

corrosion-resistant alloys of the Hastelloy C-276 type.

No specifications were received for the Inconel X750 composition

originally included in the study.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

For each-alloy type, relevant national , European and international

standards and/or specifications have been compared.

In each case, the results are presented in tabular form. The Tables
(numbered from 1 to 13) give details on composition, heat treatment,
physical properties, short-time mechanical and tensile properties
and long-term creep properties. Equivalent property tables bear the
same number in each alloy series, so that if no data are available,
the corresponding tables are absent from the series.

6. COMPARISON BY MATERIAL TYPF.

6.1. zw

OVERVIEW

This commercial designation, which corresponds to the German

Material Numbers 1.4876, the modified version 1.4876H and to
1.4958 and 1.4959 covers the following material designations :

NA 15 (UK)
NA 15 H (UK)

Z8 NC 3221 (France)
Z5 NCTA 3221 (France)

X10 NiCrAITi 32 20 F( RG, Belgium, European)

X10 NiCrAITi 32 20H F( RG)
X 5 NiCrAITi 31 20 F( RG)
X 8 NiCrAITi 32 21 F( RG)
H18 (International)

Each of the British Standards covers a specific form (sheet, plate,

strip...) of the material, and in fact includes data for a wide range of
alloys. Two grades of Alloy 800 composition, are included. The data in
these standards generally pertain, to composition, weight and
dimensional tolerances and to shorttime tensile properties. Little or
no information is provided on physical properties and longterm creep
rupture behaviour.

The F rench standard states that the information given is purely

indicative. It is limited to chemical composition, physical properties,
reference heat treatment and mechanical properties (including creep
rupture).

The four parts of the RCCMR code that cover the Z5NCTA 3321
composition provide specifications for bars and rolled or forged semi
products and seamless tubes. They give data on fabrication, chemical
composition, corrosion testing, surface state and heat treatment,
limited mechanical and tensile properties and microstructure. They also
detail the mechanical and tensile tests to be performed on material in
the asdelivered state and examinations to reveal and eliminate surface
and internal defects. F inally, they include information on method of
marking and acceptance procedure.

The Belgian standard is, in fact, identical to the European standard.

This European standard covers composition, heat treatment and
dimensional tolerances. It gives indicative data on physical properties
and longterm creep.

The International standard and the European standard are almost

identical regarding the recommendations for the Alloy 800 composition.
It is stated that the physical properties, heat treatment data and
creeprupture properties are specified for guidance only.
The German standards and specifications are by far the most complete.
Together, they cover completely dimensional and weight tolerances, heat
treatment, physical properties, short-term tensile properties, and long-
term creep-rupture properties. Marking and acceptance procedures are
also included.

The standards of all origins refer to other standards issued by their

own standardization organizations on the testing methods used to obtain
property data and on marking to identify guaranteed parts. Retesting and
test certification are also covered.

Either one, or several standards, from each organization cover the range
of products sheet, plate, strip, bar and tube. Wire products are
covered in all but the French standards.

All the standards specify heat treatment and surface finish. The German
standards also cover surface condition.

SPECIFIC PROPERTIES

Chemical Analysis (Table 1)

Only minimal differences in specifications are observed, e.g. a slightly

greater variation in nickel and chromium contents (from -0.2 to +1.2% Ni
or Cr). Approximately equivalent trace element contents are specified
throughout the standards, depending on grade.

Permissible Deviations (Table 2)

Where specified (German, Belgian, European and International standards),

permitted compositional deviations are roughly equivalent.

Material Designations and Product Forms (Table 3)

The material designations and product forms covered by each standard are
shown in the Table.

Heat Treatment (Table 4)

Treatments depend on product form and required structure and are fairly
equivalent. Maximum specified solution treatment temperatures may vary
by 50C.

Physical properties (Table 5)

Density values given in BS(when specified), NF, EURONORM NBN and ISO are
identical. Values for the alloy grades covered by DIN 17459 and
DIN 17460 are slightly lower.
Only the French standard indicates the alloy's melting point.
Modulus of Elasticity values are given only in the German
Specifications. The values are slightly higher for the basic grade
(1.4876).

Linear thprmal expansi on coefficients are included in all the

specifications, except the British standards and the French RCC-MR code,
and are practically equivalent, as are thermal conductivity, specific
heat and electrical resistivity.

Hardness values are not included in the German specifications. The

British standards values are somewhat lower than those specified
elsewhere.

Short-Time Mechanical Properties at Room Temperature (Table 6)

All but one of the standards give values for the room temperature 0.21
and 11 proof stresses and for tensile strength and elongation. The
values in the British standards are generally linked to dimensional
specifications. The French standard and the RCC-MR give a value for the
0.21 proof stress as well as values for tensile strength and elongation.
In most cases the proof stress values are stated to be minimum values.
Except for the British and French standards, where minimum values are
specified, a range of values is given for tensile strength.

Elongation values in the longitudinal direction are fairly coherent.

Transversal or tangential values are also given in the German standards
and specifications. The latter also give impact energy values, as does
the RCC-MR. The data are absent elsewhere.

Short-Time Tensile Properties at Elevated Temperature (Table 7, Table 8

and Table 9)

Table 7 gives 0.2% proof stress values for the alloys up to 600 C
(British standards) and up to 1000 C (German standards). No values are
given in the other standards. A 0.21 value at one temperature is
included in the French RCC-MR as a minimum value for acceptance tests.
The British and German standards specify values for 1.0% proof stress up
to 600C (Table 8).

Generally speaking, the values given for both properties in the British
standards are higher than those given in the German ones.

Elevated temperature tensile strength data are limited to the French

steel Z8NC 32-21 and one German grade (1.4876) in two heat-treated
conditions. The values given for the French steel are mean values and
are considerably higher than the tentative base value given for the
German grade (Table 9).

9 -
Long-Term Creep Properties (Tables 10 and 11)

As regards long-term creep properties (Table 10), no data on 1% creep

limit are included in the British standards.
Data are given after 1000h in the 600-1000C range in the French
standard for the Z8NC 32 21 grade and in the 600-900C range in the ISO,
NBN, EURONORM and SEW 470 standards. Except at 900C, the French values
are higher than those of the other standards, in which identical values
are given. 1% creep-limit after lOOOOh in the 550-1000C range are given
in all but the British standards. The French values are again higher
than those presented in the ISO, NBN, EURONORM and SEW standards.
Indicative, calculated values are given in VdTV. The DIN standards give
values at 10C intervals and lO^h data for work material 1.4958. Highest
values are presented in the DIN standards.

Creep Rupture Strength (Table 11)

No creep rupture strength values are given in the British and French
standards. lOOOh rupture strengths are given in the ISO, NBN, EURONORM
and in one German specification and are identical.
The above standards, and the VdTV German specifications include data
after lOOOOh. The values are in relatively good agreement.

The VdTV German specifications also give values after 50000h.

lOOOOOh creep rupture strengths are only given in the German standards
and specifications.
Extrapolation to 200000h are also included in the DIN standards.

6.2. INCONEL 600

OVERVIEW

Apparently, only the FRG and the UK have issued standards covering
alloys corresponding to the above commercial designation.

The British standards pertain to the material designated NA 14.

The German standards and specifications concern the alloy designated

NiCrl5Fe (Material Nos. 2.4816 and 2.4640).

Each of the British standards covers a specific form of the material

(sheet, plate, strip,...). These standards provide indications on
composition, weight and dimensional tolerances and short-time tensile
properties. Practically no information is provided on physical
properties, heat treatment and long-term creep rupture behaviour.

The German standards and specifications are structured as follows : DIN

17742 specifies the composition for all forms of NiCrl5Fe. DIN 17750,
DIN 17751, DIN 17752, DIN 17753 and DIN 17754 concern, respectively, the
following forms : plate, sheet and strip; tubes; rods and bars; wire,
and; forgings.
Data are included on hardness and short-time tensile properties at room
temperature.

10
Specification VdTV 305 provides information on melt composition,
including permissible deviations (it is the only standard to do so),
thickness tolerances, heat treatment and short-time tensile properties
at room and elevated temperature.

SPECIFIC PROPERTIES

Chemical Analygi g (Table 1)

Very uniform values are given throughout the standards. The German
standard specifies 1.0 max% Co(as compared with 2.0 max% in the British
standards, and moreover gives a maximum value for the boron content
(absent from British specifications)

Permissible Deviations (Table 2)

Values are specified only in VdTV 305.

Material Designation and Product Form (Table 3)

The Material Designations and Product Forms are shown in the Tabie.

Heat Treatment (Table 4)

Precise specifications are presented only in VdTV 305. Material type,
dimensional tolerances and heat treatment are also summarized.
Physical Properties (Table 5)

Density values are comparable. The German standards are consistent with
respect to hardness (Brinell hardness). The British standards (values
given as Vickers hardness) are somewhat lower than the German values; a
range of significantly higher values can be obtained for various roll
tempers.

No values are given in either the British or the German standards for
Modulus of Elasticity. Linear Thermal Expansion or Thermal Conductivity.
Specific Heat or Electrical Resistivity.

Short-Time Mechanical Properties at RT (Table 6)

All the standards give minimum 0.2% and 1% proof stress. tensile
strength and elongation values at room temperature, generally in terms
of thickness and heat-treated condition. The British tensile property
values are generally higher than the corresponding German values.

Short-Time Tensile Properties at Elevated Temperature

(Tables 7, 8 and 9)

The minimum elevated temperature 0.21 proof stress values (where given
in the British standards, i.e. for sheet and plate, seamless tubes and
bar) are higher than those specified in the German specification
(Table 7).

11
No values are given for the elevated temperature 1% proof stress values
in the German standards (Table 8).

As regards elevated temperature tensile strength, only the German VdTV

specification gives data (Table 9).

Long-Term Creep Properties

No long-term stress rupture or creep properties are specified in any of

the standards.

6.3. NIMONIC 80A

OVERVIEW

This commercial designation, which corresponds to the German Material

Numbers 2.4952 and 2.4631 covers the following material designations :

NA 20 (UK)
NC 20TA (France)
NiCr20TiAl (FRG)

The British alloy is included in BS 3076 which pertains to nickel and

nickel alloys in the form of bars.

The French standard applies to bars for use in fabricating valves.

The German material is covered by two DIN standards, one of which only
specifies composition, while the other includes quality specifications
on bar material for bolts and nuts, and by a Werkstoff-Leistungsblatt
specification which covers all the forms with the exception of wire and
tube.

The British standard gives data on composition, dimensional tolerances

(diameter, width, length, straightness) in various heat-treated
conditions, heat treatment, surface finish and room-temperature tensile
properties. The only high-temperature property included is the minimum
stress to produce rupture at 750CC in 23h.

The French standard includes information on composition (including

permissible deviations) and heat treatment. The only dimensional
limitation specified pertains to bar diameter. Room-temperature tensile
properties are given, as well as indicative high-temperature short-time
tensile properties. Physical properties are also specified.

The German standards and specifications cover the composition with

respect to dimensional tolerances, heat treatment, physical properties,
short-time tensile properties at room and high temperature, and long-
term creep rupture and stress properties. Some information on surface
finish is given.

12
SPECIFIC PROPERTIES

Chemical Analysis (Table 1)

The chemical compositions of all the grades are completely coherent. A

slightly higher Fe content (3% max as compared with 1.5% max) is
tolerated in the French composition and in that specified in DIN 17240.

Permissible Deviations (Table 2)

Quasi identical permissible deviations are specified for these two

compositions.

Material Designations and Product Forms (Table 3)

The data from the specifications are summarized in the Table.

Heat Treatment (Table 4)

There does not appear to be a standard heat treatment for a given

product.

Physical Properties (Table 5)

Density is identical for all grades.

Modulus of Elasticity The value given in the British standard is that

at 20C. It is lower than that given in the DIN standard (by about 8%),
which in turn is slightly lower than the corresponding value in the WL.
These German standards give values at temperatures up to 800 and 1000 C
respectively. The WL values are consistently slightly higher than those
given in the DIN standard.

As regards linear thermal expansion, no data are included in the British

standard. In the range given, the French values are comparable to those
of the DIN standard. Above 400C, the WL data are higher than the DIN
values.

Thermal conductivity at 20C is comparable in the French and German

standards. The WL specification gives values at 100C intervals up to
900C.
No comparison of the electrical conductivity is possible, since it is
only recorded in the WL specification.

The value for specific heat capacity is higher in the DIN standard than
in the WL specification.

Hardness values are given only in the WL specification.

Short-Time Mechanical Properties at RT (Table 6)

0.2% proof stresses, tensile strength and elongation at room temperature

are included in all the standards.
The French values (especially for 0.2% proof stress but also for tensile
strength) are higher than the others.

13
Short-Time Tensile Properties at Elevated Temperature (Tables 7, 9, 10)

The table compares the 0.2% proof stress values given in the German
standard and in the German specification. The standard gives values
which are considerably below the experimentally determined values
reported in the specification. No values are given in the British and
French standards.

No IX proof stress values are given in any of the standards.

Only the French standard includes (indicative) mean values for the high-
temperature tensile strength of the alloy (Table 9).

Long-Term Creep Properties

Data for long-term high-temperature creep are limited to the German

alloys. The DIN standard gives guidance values for the 0.2Z and 11 creep
limits after 10000, 30000 and 100000 hours, whereas the specifications
include typical values for the 0.2% creep limit only, after 100, 300,
1000 and 10000h. These data are shown, without comment in Table 10.

Creep rupture strength and relaxation properties are presented

respectively in Tables 11 and 12 for the German grades.
Complementary creep rupture data (i.e., values for different periods)
are included in the DIN standard and the WL specification. The
relaxation properties, qualified as provisional guidance values, are
given only by the DIN standard and are included here solely for the sake
of completion.

The British standard and the German specification give values for the
t ime -to-rupture at 750C under respectively 325 and 340N/mm2. These
times are 23 and 30h. (Table 13)

6.4. INCONEL 718

OVERVIEW

This commercial designation corresponds to the German Work Material

Number 2.4668.
The only document received that covers this material is the German
specification WL 2.4668.
Consequently, no comparison is possible. For the sake of completeness,
the main properties are also shown in Tables 1 to 11.

6.5. HASTELLOY C-276

OVERVIEW

One French standard was received which includes two grades of a

composition equivalent to the German Material No. 2.4819 (Ni-Mol6Crl5).

Although, the standard cannot be compared, for completeness, the main

data are listed in Tables 1 to 6.

14 -
7. CONCLUSIONS
The most obvious result of the present study is that by far the most
documented material of the group of high-nickel, heat-resisting alloys
is that known commercially as Alloy 800.

Of the 30 standards and specifications received, 18 pertain to the

grades in this group.

They originate from all the participating countries and also include one
European and one International standard.

The German standards are by far the most complete.

Only the British and German standards pertain to the Inconel 600
composition. Practically no information is included in the British
standards on physical properties, heat treatment and long-term creep
rupture behaviour.

As regards Nimonic 80A type material, British, French and German

standards document its property requirements.

Once again, in the British standard little information is given on high-

temperature properties.

The Inconel 718 composition is covered only by a German specification

and the nickel-molybdenum alloys only by a French standard.

In none of the groups is the specific data presented in a homogeneous

manner in the standards of various origins. They are given variously as
minimum values, maximum values, a range of values and as measured or
estimated values.

Most of the standards refer to other standards drawn up by their issuing

organizations specifying applicable test methods for property
determinations.
This is also the case in the International, European and Belgian
standards for tolerance requirements.

Generally speaking, the limits and testing methods used are comparable.
The SI system of units is fairly well respected and slight derogations
do not hamper comparison.

Hardness is given variously as HB, HV and HRC, with Brinell values

predominating.

On the whole, the values presented for a given composition are in fairly
good agreement.

8. RECOMMENDATIONS
A tentative suggestion regarding the harmonization of existing standards
would be to use the structure of either the European or the
International standard as a basis, and to expand the content of the
selected standard to include more detailed mechanical and tensile
property specifications of the type given in the German specifications.

This study compares European standards and specifications on high-nickel alloys.

Special attention has been paid to the data and guidelines presented for
composition, heat treatment, physical properties, short-time mechanical properties
at room and elevated temperature, and long-term creep properties at elevated
temperatures. Only the standards and specifications provided by the participating
organizations and one international and one European standard were compared. It
is concluded that the values presented for a given composition show fairly good
agreement.
