UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


The branches of government are a part of the unit covering Government and Civics.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
TLW utilize internet to research the three branches of government on kids.gov
TLW complete online activities that reflect the information researched
TLW complete a graphic organizer on the three branches of government to ensure understanding

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Government and Civics 2.25
ISTE 1.a, 3.c. & d.

MATERIALS:
Internet
Microsoft Word

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


Students will understand that we all have laws to follow that are developed by the government.
Students will research, read, and discuss the process of how laws come to be.
Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of Government and Civics. 2.25
There will be online activities to differentiate and assess the pace of learning for students.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction:
Begin by discussing with the students how the constitution is the law for our country and how it divides our
government into three branches.
Allow students to access the websites on the three branches in which they will read and discuss aloud with
teacher.
The students will participate in three online activities to establish a basic understanding.

Procedures: Prior to Computer (15 minutes)


Teachers Procedure:
1. After the introduction of the subject, the teacher will discuss with the students the similarity of laws made by
government to rules made by teacher in the class.
2. Use the smart board to list some laws that government has made in comparison with school rules.
3. When the list is completed, have the students to decide who makes, carry out, and evaluate the school rules.

Student Procedures:
1. Students will prepare their list on paper along with the teacher as he/she compiles list on the smart board .

At The Computer (30 minutes)


Teachers Procedure:
1. Have students to access www.kids.gov/three-branches-of-government
2. Prompt students to read aloud and discuss the three branches of government.
3. Have students to access two online activities on www.myschoolhouse.com and www.sheppardsoftwares.com for
completion.
4. When students have completed online activities, they will create a graphic organizer to demonstrate their
knowledge.

Students Procedures:
1. Open internet browser and MS Word
2. Read online material and complete online activities
3. Create a graphic organizer in which URL will be copied and pasted to MS Word document for viewing.

Closure:
Students will understand that there are 3 branches of government that work together to make laws and run
our country.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Students will be evaluated on all three online activities using a rubic grading scale.

MODIFICATIONS:
Allow students to work in pairs to complete online assignments.

b. Student will talk about the information you have just read.

a. Student will set up a free account.

b. Student will create a graphic organizer to document information learned about the three branches of government.
