Eating Disorders

Essential Question: What is an eating disorder caused by and how can we avoid it or treat it
once its already there?
Materials
Notetaking materials; pen and paper
Grouping Strategy
Students will answer questions presented by the instructor in a cooperative manner, while not
specifically working in assigned groups.

Health 1.12.8 Analyze personal susceptibility to injury, illness, or death if engaging in risky
behaviors.
Health 1.12.9 Evaluate how research and medical advances influence the prevention and control
of illness/disease.
Health 2.12.2 Analyze how personal perception of norms influence healthy and risky behaviors.
Objective
Students will develop an understanding of eating disorders. They will be able to define and
clearly differentiate between the major types of eating disorders. Students will be able to identify
the signs of an eating disorder and the root causes of it. They will be able to analyze the effects
of these disorders on the body and social life and be familiar with how to treat or prevent them.
Students will be able to answer a series of short questions related to the subject.
Introduction
Establish the definition of an eating disorder and the different types of disorders found in the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Define each
disorder and introduce the focus on the most common ones.
Modeling
Explain the reasons teenagers/people develop eating disorders and how a person with an eating
disorder views and feels about themselves. Explain their perception and compare it to reality.
Explain the signs of each defined disorder and their effects on the body, a persons family and
social life. Explain statistics and facts of eating disorders.
Guided Practice
Students will take notes as the instructor speaks and points out relevant information, in order to
develop a better understanding of each important point. Students will highlight relevant aspects
of the presentation and will be able to generate well-informed answers to discussion questions
posed by the instructor.
Independent Practice
Students will research the other types of eating disorders for personal understanding.
Closure Activity
Students will answer the question: Why do people develop eating disorders and what are their
perceptions of themselves compared to reality?
