El sndrome de ojo seco (SOS) es una patologa de la superficie ocular con alta prevalencia y de origen multifac-
torial, que conduce a una inestabilidad de la pelcula lagrimal y a una inflamacin crnica de la superficie ocular.
Provoca problemas de calidad de visin y un gran nmero de posibles complicaciones que, con el tiempo, afectan
a la calidad de vida.
El SOS es una patologa frustrante debido a la escasez actual de terapias reales que puedan invertir o, al menos,
detener su progresin. La investigacin actual dirige sus esfuerzos a conocer ms en profundidad la fisiopatologa
del SOS para desarrollar nuevas pruebas clnicas que mejoren el diagnstico y estrategias teraputicas ms eficaces.
En este artculo de revisin se describen las tcnicas utilizadas actualmente en clnica, as como las nuevas ten-
dencias diagnsticas, en cuanto a su diseo, mtodo de realizacin, valores de corte segn diferentes autores y
valores de sensibilidad y especificidad.
En esta primera parte del artculo, nos centraremos en la descripcin de los test que existen para la evaluacin
de la sintomatologa, la funcin visual, el flujo lagrimal y la estabilidad de la lgrima para, posteriormente, en una
segunda parte, detallar las caractersticas de los test que evalan la composicin de la lgrima y el estado de la
superficie ocular, y terminar describiendo una serie de bateras de pruebas que ayudarn al clnico en el correcto
diagnstico del SOS.
