3.2 Managing Digital Tools and Resources

Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning
experiences.

Reflection

The evidence presented for this standard is my Internet Lesson Plan which I completed in ITEC
7430. For this assignment I created a lesson plan for a 4th grade STEM class that integrated
technology into their math and science block. I completed this assignment while collaborating
with the 4th grade STEM teacher on the needs of her classroom.

Standard 3.2, Managing Digital Tools and Resources established the expectations for being able
to effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning
experiences. Students at my school have a 1:1 device ratio, so all students will had access to an
internet connected device as they need it throughout this lesson. Although having a device in
each students hand was very beneficial for effectively managing digital tools and resources, it
was also critical that I keep the students engaged in the lesson so they didnt wander to other
Internet locations on their devices. Students worked through various STEM stations in the
classroom including 2 that are more math focused and teacher guided, one that is a makerspace,
and then the two stations that were specific to this lesson. They moved through these stations in
small groups of 4 5 students. This opened up the homeroom teacher and myself to walk
around the room to spot check student use of devices, act as a facilitator of the content, and
ultimately ensure that we were effectively managing the digital tools and resources that were
provided to the students during this lesson implementation.

Completing this assignment allowed me to model and practice effectively managing digital tools
and resources to create authentic lessons that promote student engagement. It allowed me to
enhance my student learning experience by removing external behavior issues before they
occurred. In the future, I would like to instruct students more in-depth on the use of Canvas
before expecting them to navigate it on their own. I had assumed that they already knew how to
navigate and explore the learning management system independently.

My Internet Lesson Plan, with the classroom management component, had a direct impact on
faculty development at my school. This teacher grew in her knowledge and awareness of
managing digital tools and resources while using an online learning environment in her
classroom. The impact of this artifact could be evaluated with information personal
communications with this teacher and her comfort level with troubleshooting in her own
classroom.
