reason, this year seems extra
sentimental for us.
Maybe it's because of
the upcoming induction into
the Hall of Fame (see the
news), or maybe it's because
thanks to conventions and
online chats, we feel like we
know some of you so well.
For that reason, we
hope if you don't mind if we
get a little personal in this

issue. We'll be including some
of our personal musings on
the band and on fandom itself.
We're going to be resurrecting
a few classic WT features and
we're going to be featuring our
favorite photos. (Those of you
who know us, must appreciate

So it was Don Henley by default. I wasn't exactly
thrilled to go, to say the least. But Melissa was paying for the

our fill of pop art we made our way to the Tower. We always
ended up at the Tower. lt has one of the best gilt shops in
England. <G>. After wandering around there for awhile, it
was time to figure out how to get out to Wembley. A quick
consultation ol the map in the Underground station pointed
us in the right direction. We were on our way.
There was some time to kill before the show. Our
stalking skills were in their infancy at this point and it just
didn't occur to us to have a look around the back at the trucks
and busses. So, we went to Wimpy's lor a quick dinner.

The doors had just opened. To our delight and surprise we
had great seats. We were in the center on the lloor in about
the 23rd row. Pretty good for not even trying.
The opening act was this band called the River City
People. I don't remember much about them except they had
a female lead singer and I couldn't wait for them to leave the
stage.

Whether Don Henley likes it or not, the
lnternet is fast becoming an integral part of
daily life. We sign on to check mail, read
the news, track stocks and chat with
friends. This connectedness has opened
all kinds of doors for fans all over the
world.
Sitting here at my brand new Sony com-
puter I can visit any number of Eagles and
related web sites, browse through the junk
on the Eagles newsgroup, participate in a
variety of discussions on the Eagles mail-
ing list, and then chat about it all on AOL or
lRC. lt wasn't always like this, though.
We got our first comPuter in 1990.

two 5 1/4 disk drives, no hard drive and the
monitor was barely VGA. A salesman at
Sears convinced us that this new thing
called Prodigy would be really cool to
have. The modem (whatever that was)
plugged into the wall. That seemed easy
enough. We bought it and took it home.
Once installed (it actually workedl) we
signed on to Prodigy. What a revelation
those garish purple and yellow colors held!
Just about the first thing we did was look
for the music message area. There was
one lonely Don Henley topic in the rock
message boards. We enthusiastically
replied to it. Before long we developed
several close friends that we not only
posted and emailed with, but also traded
video, audio and news clippings with.

The "Resumption" in 1994 brought even
more fans out. There were Posts and
posts-tickets for sale or trade, reviews of
shows, even Eagle sightings. lgnoring
warnings from family members ("They
could be ax murderers, you know.") we
even made plans to meet a few online
pals at conceds. They weren't crazed
maniacs or even all that strange. They
were just fans like us.
We signed on to AOL for the first time
about this time too. What a difference
from Prodigy. There was no permanent
Eagles folder. We'd create it and before
I long it would scroll off from inactivity.
Who needed that? We cancelled our
membership and went back to "P.
then. The

World Wide Web just sort of exploded.
Everyone and everything seemed to have
a web site. Bev in Canada had the first
Eagles web site. lt provided a brief history
of the band, photos, reviews, and even
excerpts from our fledgling Eagles
fanzine, the Wasted Times. Annette in
Holland soon had her web site up. She
also had a history of the band, but then
she started putting up her collection of
bootlegs. What a fantastic resource. An-
nette seemed to have every boot known
to man so I'd check her Page before
making a blind purchase. Kevin Fong
then started compiling his Eagles discog-

raphy. Another great source was right
there at our fingertips! We thought that it
would be fun to have an Eagles web page
too so Melissa bought a book and taught
herself HTML in a week and we began
putting up the first incarnation of the Fast-
lane, making sure we didn't duplicate any
of the others' work--we just linked to it.
There are times now when peoPle are
fighting and arguing over something trivial
like a guitar pick on the mailing list or the
message board that I long for those
Prodigy days and the friends we had there.
I even miss lhe 112 note argument about
the "and Jesus, people bought'em" line in
The Last Resort. Some of those old
Prodigy people are still around (and you
know who you are. <G>) and so many
others have come and gone over the last 4
years that sometimes it's hard to keep up
with all the new faces. We old timers
sometimes get accused of being posses-
sive, unfriendly or even cliquey. We're not.
We've just been through an awful lot to-
gether.
The lnternet is here to stay. Our online fan
community will continue to grow and
change. We were around before even the
Eagles and the management were and
we'll probably be around after they've got-
ten bored with it. And yes Mr. Henley we
do have lives!

It seems like something that we would make up for the WT. A sick,
twisted individual roaming the country, committing heinous acts of fraud all the
while claiming to be-Randy Meisner. But we didn't make this one up....honest!
For quite some time, we've been aware that someone was out there impersonat-
ing Randy. As of late, though, things seem to be picking up. ln fact, The San
Francisco Chronicle recently ran an article and interview with Randy about this
Meisner wanna-be.
We first became aware of the imposter when we put up our web page.
We'd get mail from people who were all excited that they had met Randy. But
some things didn't make sense. The Randy that people met (usually in Las
Vegas) claimed to still be in the band and to be on tour with the Eagles (during
non-touring times). He asked for money for autographs (for charity, he said).
Someone scanned and sent us a copy of "Randy'"s autograph and it looked
nothing like the real thing. A case of a bad pen or cramped hand? Nope. We
don't think so.
The Randy lmposter is doing more than just duping fans into accepting
bogus autographs, though. His entire act is part of a much larger fraud and
scam scheme. The reports we've personally gotten have detailed how the fake
Randy has:
Used his "stardom" to lure young girls up to his hotel room in Vegas.
Sometimes more than one a night.

The Real Randy!!! Told foreign businessmen that for several hundred dollars each, he
could get them backstage passes to a benefit conceft the Eagles and
he were playing.

Gotten a severalthousand dollar advance on a deal he made with a

business after he told them that he could get the Eagles to endorse their
product.

Received severalthousands of dollars of musical equipment (strings,

guitars, amps) during a trade show when he told the exhibitor he'd be
happy to take them out on the Eagles tour with him.

Scammed several people out of f ree drinks and dinners just by offering
the experience to be eating with a real live Eagle.

And that's just what we've heard about. After reading lhe Chronicle arlicle,
though, it seems so much more large scale. Even the Hard Rock Cafe has
accepted memorabilia from the guy. An active Eagles fan would have no
problem sussing this guy out, but many people who just love the Eagles music or
who may have a vague idea who Randy is are taken in because this guy is
smooth. Key tip-offs that the guy you are talking to is not Randy are:

He seems to do a lot of his scamming in Vegas and San Francisco

He almost always says that he's still in the Eagles and that they are
currently on tour and working on an album. (the real Randy may be
bitter and wish he were part of the resumption, but he's not a liar)

Pass the word around. This guy needs to be caught and stopped!
