Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

After reading the syllabus for EDU 299: Education Portfolio an unsettling feeling

commenced. To continue to a Bachelors degree for elementary education, the Praxis Core

exams are required to complete before entering the course at UNLV. According to Nevada Dept.

of Education Praxis Requirements, include a score of 156 for reading, writing 162 and math 150.

Exam Preparation

Preparing for the exam was a challenge. I did not know where to start. There is enormous

amount of information on the ETS website. Once I found the section that corresponds with an

Elementary Education degree, I began to study the guide provided. My biggest problem with the

information provided is that I was not sure all the information was relevant to what I needed to

know. The handbook on the EST website was troublesome, navigating was not easy and had

practice questions scattered throughout it, not to mention the long readings. I began to feel

overwhelmed by information, which led me to the decision of taking the practice test provided

from the link. The only way to know if the information I studied was correct was to take the

tests. To my astonishment, the questions on the exams were nothing like what previously

studied. I felt very unprepared taking the practice exams. However, after receiving the scores, I

feel with proper guidance my test scores will improve.

Exam Results.

For the reading exam, I scored 25 multiple choice questions correct out of 56 with

a percentage of 45%.

For writing, the score was 24 multiple-choice questions correct out of 40 with a

percentage of 60%.

Lastly, for math 37 multiple-choice questions correct out of 53 with a percentage

of 70%. All the test scores indicate that I need improvement and am not likely to

pass any of the Praxis Core Exams.

Future Exam Preparation

To prepare for the Praxis Core exams, attaining proper study material is crucial. One of

the problems for studying the exam was finding the correct study guide. Using only the

information on the ETS website was confusing for me. Without a guide, I felt blind searching the

correct material to study. After more research, I found the Ed Ready website is better suited for

my math preparation. The website is easy to navigate and gives the information in an organized

manner. The Praxis Core Review courses at CSN are a wonderful idea. However, when

searching on the CSN education department website, the 2016 calendar is shown. Hopefully, this

means they need to update the website and that classes for 2017 are available. For someone

terrible at independent study, purchasing a study book is not a great idea. The UNLV interactive

guide appears like it would be more useful. I am not sure if one has to be a current student

enrolled at UNLV to qualify. Nevertheless, to be successful studying and having the proper

guide is critical to passing the Praxis Core exams.
