CHAIRMANS REMARKS

Chairmans Remarks

Hello and welcome to the latest SDMS Newsletter, and thanks again as always to Colin Justice for putting
this together.

This is my first Chairmans remarks since Calamity Jane so lets start by saying what a great show that
was! Congratulations to absolutely everyone who had any sort of hand in making the production the success
it was. But (as is probably appropriate with a female led musical) I do want to mention specifically four
young ladies. Firstly, the terrific Kimberley Harvey who stepped up to her first lead role effortlessly and
made the title role her own. I know also that she was encouraged and supported by Jane Pegler, who
continued to run the SDMS Concert Party whilst taking on the daunting task of Directing her first show
with us and what a great job she made of it, ensuring everyone was fully engaged and making the process
an enjoyable one. Also praise to Becky North, who helped out on the music side of things and ensured we
were close to being show ready before we welcomed back Alan P from his round the world trip to securely
take us through show week. And finally to Kimberley Joyce, who continues to do such a great job as Stage
Manager that we forget she joined us a performer! Hopefully we will see her on stage again very soon!

And on to Sister Act, which is now in full rehearsal mode. We welcome the superb Maz Hill to the lead
role of Dolores and she is joined by other new members who will merge effortlessly Im sure with current
SDMS members to produce another successful SDMS first, under the talented stewardship of Helen
Stoddart. Ticket sales are going well and we need to ensure we get bumper crowds again to top up the profit
we look like having made on Calamity Jane so thank you everyone for your sterling efforts so far.

Novembers show is still under review, but I can confirm that Top Hat has been temporarily postponed
until November 2018 at the earliest. In the meantime we do have two shows booked for next year, which
are Carousel for April at Ferneham hall, and The Producers again at Fareham in July. We have already
received expressions of interest to Direct Carousel, and I would urge anyone interested in taking on the
role of Director for The Producers to email Alan P as Production Secretary (alappring@gmail.com) and
copy both Kate as Secretary (secretary@sdms.org.uk) and myself as Chairman (chairman@sdms.org.uk)
into ideas for your take on the show, production ideas, schedules etc. This invitation can also be taken
beyond SDMS members if you know anyone who may be interested in the role, but we would like to get
the position confirmed within the next couple of months.

Dont forget to keep looking out for SDMS Social Group events, including the next Variety Night on 15
July (details in this newsletter), and I would encourage you all to start spreading the word about this
years Dinner Dance, as we would like to get as many members, past and present along in December to
help us celebrate our Diamond Jubilee. This is traditionally also a time when we hand out NODA Awards
Contd from page 1.
so if you believe you are entitled to one this year do let Tom Hudson, Members Secretary know
(tom.w.hudson@hotmail.com). We are also always looking for volunteers to help with the canteen on a
Wednesday evening so if you know anyone who can help us out do let us know.

Hope to see you all soon, and in the meantime if you have any comments or ideas on your society just get
in touch with one of your Committee members, myself or Kate.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
Dear All
VARIETY NIGHT

I am delighted to announce that there will be a Variety Night held on

Saturday 15th July at Portchester Parish Hall 7.30pm.

This is a much loved social event where you are all welcome to attend as a performer or just come along to be
entertained.
If you haven't been to a variety night before, it is a chance to perform something that you wouldn't normally be
able to do within our shows.

These evenings have definitely gone down in the much treasured SDMS history as most entertaining events!
We would love to invite you to make some more special memories and join us on the 15th.

If you are interested in performing please let me know and send your backing tracks to me. My email
is juliedavies1976@yahoo.com

On the evening, there will be a few snacks on the tables but you are welcome to bring your own nibbles and drinks
as well. The canteen will be open for tea and coffee for a donation.
There will also be a raffle. So any raffle prizes will be gratefully received.

Tickets for this event are 5, concessions for children at 3.

You will receive a receipt in the way of a ticket and you will also be able to pay on the door.

So please tell your friends and family and I look forward to putting this event on for you.

SDMS DIAMOND JUBILEE ANNUAL DINNER & DANCE

I am also pleased to announce that this year's Dinner and Dance will be held at the Innlodge, Burrfields Road,
Portsmouth on Saturday 2nd December 7pm-1am.

This year, the tickets will be 32 a head.

As we discovered last year, the venue is perfect for a traditional SDMS dinner and dance with a bar within the
room, a horseshoe setting around the all important dance floor and a comfortable seating area, close to the action
but enough distance to hold a conversation.
I am delighted that we will be entertained by the Free Style Funk Collective again this year. Followed by the disco
at the end of the evening.

This year is of course our Diamond Jubilee and we are keen to welcome all members of our society, old members
and of course loved ones and friends to help us celebrate this milestone.

To secure your place at this fantastic event, a chance to get dressed up and celebrate our achievements, I will be
collecting a deposit of 10 a head from now on.

The menu is as follows:-

STARTERS
Garlic Breaded Mushrooms
Goats Cheese and Caramelised Onion Bruschetta
Prawn Cocktail
Chicken Liver Pate
MAINS
Roast Turkey with all the trimmings
Braised Beef in Red Wine with Yorkshire Pudding
Fresh Salmon with Hollandaise Sauce
Fig, Stilton, Walnut and Rosemary Tart

PATRONS
We recently had the SDMS AGM and I know that many of you were unable to attend. I presented
the Patron Secretary Report and made a request for everyone to try to enlist more Patrons. In the
past 2 years, we have lost many Patrons through ill health, too incapacitated to attend shows or
through death (unfortunately) dropping from 71 to 58 Patrons.
As I suggested in my report, I am asking all of you, particularly new members, to try to get family
or friends to become a Patron. This is a positive way that they can support our Society. I can let
you have the current Application Form which can be completed and returned to me. On the form,
you can see that a Patron receives a free ticket for every show and a programme. However, many
Patrons bring along their own friends and family which is a benefit to us. They can also take part in
Society activities or help in many other ways.
One very good way that you can encourage membership is to offer it as a gift for a birthday,
anniversary, Easter or, later in the year, Christmas. So please, please make every effort to attract
people to become Patrons.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Dennis Redding.
