Radiofrequency Ablation Surgery

Radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, is a procedure in which a small area of a nerve tissue

is heated up using electrical current produced by a radio wave. This procedure is used
to decrease pain signals in specific areas of the body. When performed for the heart,
using a catheter, it is also known as catheter ablation. While it works in a similar way, it
uses radio waves to destroy a small part of the heart tissue responsible for the rapid,
slow or irregular heartbeats. Destroying the problematic tissue helps in reducing the
regular rhythm of the heart.

While medicines are useful in controlling arrhythmias caused by specific abnormal

tissues, ablation is a more long lasting treatment. This procedure has an overall high
success rate and is considered a relatively low-risk procedure, performed over a period
of 2 to 4 hours. The most common use of this procedure is in treatment of a serious
condition, called Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), which occurs because of
abnormality in the conduction fibres of the heart. Other problems that commonly require
this procedure are atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation. The whole idea is to destroy the
defective tissue without damaging the healthy cells of the heart. It is mainly advisable
for the patients of Arrhythmia who experience serious side-effects to prescribed
medication.

Despite the fact that this is a relatively safe procedure, Radiofrequency Ablation Surgery
needs to be performed very carefully. It is best that the best doctors are approached.
One must be very careful about any arrhythmia causes & symptoms and approach a
reputed cardiologist for irregular heartbeat treatment. After surgery, it is important for
the patient to stay careful about the following arrhythmia symptoms or complexities:

1. Swelling in the region of surgery.

2. Uncontrollable bleeding from surgery puncture marks.
3. Dizziness or lightheadedness.
4. Shortness of breath.
5. Feeling sick or excessive sweating.
6. Pain or discomfort that spreads to jaw or arm.
